insaider··on That Shouldn't Happen – UnreachableException in .NET 7
Just wanted to highlight a relevant tool i recently discovered: Sentry.

It's already become invaluable in my .net apps for tracking down tricky errors, especially in the new MAUI apps.

Caught one just yesterday where the app was trying to call an api with decimals serialized with a comma because it was on a dutch user's phone! I imagine it would've been quite the headache catching that without sentry. Integrates with most tech-stacks too, not just .net btw

insaider··on BuiltWith: $14M ARR, no employees
I remember stumbling across this site years ago, thought it was neat, and never thought about it again.

There's definitely a lot of untapped potential here. Could be so much bigger with marketing and R&D. A browser extension for example.

insaider··on The Portuguese can no longer afford to live in Portugal
Surely there's a global housing market crash coming in the near future? These prices are simply unsustainable combined with a decreasing population in the rich world and thus a massively decreased demand for housing.

Obviously there's local factors like Lisbon's desirability to foreigners, but from a global perspective, in the developed world...?

What am I missing?

Shouldn't at least several people go to prison for this kind of thing? If my personal accounts were 'works of absolute fiction' I certainly would, what gives?
insaider··on Modern city dwellers have lost about half their gut microbes
Sounds like you're fighting confirmation bias with confirmation bias.

Your points are valid, don't get me wrong, but there is also a lot of research causally linking microbiome deficiencies with various health problems.

Also worth noting your shots seem more aimed at the journalist's style than the researcher's work. I for one, think this is super valuable and promising research

insaider··on Modern city dwellers have lost about half their gut microbes
A theory: this decrease in gut microbiome diversity directly correlates with an increase in fatigue.

Ever since the first time I had antibiotics I've suffered from chronic fatigue, I'm pretty sure there's a strong connection here to the bacteria in my gut as it often feels like the main symptom is a reduced ability to digest food.

insaider··on Sometimes users prefer the less straightforward UX
Yep exactly, maybe they just want to be provocative with their title so they framed it that way...
insaider··on C#: IEnumerable, yield return, and lazy evaluation
Very interesting, would love a follow up deep dive into the IAsyncEnumerable and await foreach() features!

Epic! Someone stick a front-end on this pls
insaider··on A Spanish teen’s genome may hold the secret to lupus
Interesting, why do you think carbs are a trigger for you? I always have bad IBS symptoms when the other symptoms flare up but I haven't been able to find any foods that seem to directly correlate with it.
insaider··on A Spanish teen’s genome may hold the secret to lupus
I've been struggling with the same sort of thing for 8 years now. I've been to dozens of doctors in several different countries but never got a proper diagnosis.

From my own research and observations I'm quite confident it is, as you elude to, an auto-immune related disease. The two major triggers for me are exercise; particularly anaerobic e.g weightlifting, and alcohol. Alcohol actually alleviates the symptoms for a day or more and then undoubtedly i'll struggle for a few days after that. Which points to alcohol's suppressive effects on the immune system.

I really really hope this, and similar research[1], turns into something tangible

So true, the whole DK discourse is very rarely constructive. Except on HN of course ;)

What I want to know is how he got all that funding? And from Stripe!? This damages their reputation too I would think.

I thought it was just me! It reads like something Trump might write; lots of superlatives, little substance.
insaider··on A project with a single 11,000-line code file
This one time, working at a country's state electricity provider, I was tasked with drawing all the power stations in the country on a map. I was stumped, I couldn't figure out why the markers weren't showing up. Then I zoomed out and saw them being drawn on the other side of the world. The latitudes and longitudes were the wrong way around. The data was from a government-maintained database. lol.
insaider··on The singularity is close?
An AGI would have no concept of morals or good or bad or even anything resembling a will.

Therefore does it not follow that the only possibility of malevolence or benevolence would derive from the instructions of humans. By which point I expect society to be much more evolved and aligned (as perhaps we merge with the AI) so as to not have gravely conflicting interests.

Perhaps in fact, meaning itself, a human construct, will cease and render such concerns of good vs bad obsolete?

insaider··on American poverty is too high for all kinds of people
I'm tying capitalism to its resultant effects, specifically inequality. https://confrontingpoverty.org/poverty-facts-and-myths/ameri...

The changes that I would propose are more cultural than governmental.

Cultural map of the world: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inglehart%E2%80%93Welzel_cultu...

Happiest countries in the world: https://worldpopulationreview.com/country-rankings/happiest-...

Notice the correlation between happiness and culture. That should be the measure of success, not pocket depth. Those cultures that are happiest also have a strong disinclination to talking about money, as they recognise the divisiveness of egotistical capitalism.

'Capitalism either creates or reinforces egoism by lessening any altruistic instincts and by weakening the “moral force in man which combats the inclination towards egoistic acts” including criminal ones.' (America also has the highest incarceration rates of any developed country).

insaider··on American poverty is too high for all kinds of people
Because it's the most capitalistic country on the planet and inequality is the direct result of that.

A government's job in the 21st century is not much more than to counter the downsides of capitalism. But people see how bad the US is at doing that so they lose faith in the government and so decide that the solution is to privatise everything, thus actually exasperating the problem!

We need institutions(governments) that exist outside of the incentives of capitalism in order to fix capitalisms problems. But the US government, and increasingly many others, are far too affected by capitalistic incentives.

When the measure of a man is the depth of his pockets then the world shall be ran by clowns.

insaider··on Ask HN: What book changed your life?
Ah yes, the Stoic 'considered life', exactly. I recommended Derren Brown's book 'Happiness' if anyone is interested in that.
insaider··on Ask HN: What book changed your life?
What's the term for when the pursuit of knowledge is regarded as the highest morality? That's where I mostly get my meaning at least.

insaider··on MarketRank: Anti-SEO Ranking Algorithm
Surely Google has already thought of this.

Is it that Google actually benefits from having an algorithm that is susceptible to being gamed and therefore they are disincentivized to move away from that?
