inglondon··on Crossfit Inc. suspends use of Facebook and associated properties
I can't verify the quality of these studies but it seems that injury rates per 1000 active hours of crossfit at 0.27 - 0.74 [1] are significantly lower than more common sports such as running at 2.9 - 4.4 and basketball at 6.3 - 12.9 [2]

inglondon··on Self-driving trucks begin mail delivery test for U.S. Postal Service
Reminds me of when I attended an event in Paris, France and they had a robot bartender. I was there during the day when they were setting up and it took a team of 3 engineers ~8 hours to set up vs just paying a bartender for the 3 hours + an hour's setup time that the evening cocktail reception lasted.

I understand they organisers wanted something cool, but it was comical to observe nonetheless.

inglondon··on Researchers have seen colistin-heteroresistant germs in the US
They’re members of a notorious family of multidrug-resistant pathogens, called carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE), which collectively have mortality rates as high as 50 percent and have spread rapidly around the globe in recent years. A 2013 report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimated that there were more than 9,300 CRE infections in the US each year, leading to 600 deaths.

Is it correct to assume that while CREs have up to 50% mortality rate worldwide, the US mortality rate of CRE infections is around 6.5%?

Edit: I applaud efforts to increase access to healthcare worldwide. We really need to do more to combat the spread of such bacteria through better management of antibiotic use, mainly in agriculture.

inglondon··on Ultrasound Haptic Technology Could Revolutionise Man-Machine Interaction
Apart from the usecases mentioned in the article, this could have interesting applications in sterile environments such as operating theatres and clean-rooms. Another fairly obvious application is virtual and augmented reality. For more traditional computer set-ups I see it falling more into the Leap Motion camp where it might not add a lot of value.
inglondon··on Less stress, more productivity: working fewer hours is good for you and your boss
What about the 3rd option, getting two tasks done?

- Grind for 1 hour and assuming 90% success rate, finish the task 9 out of 10 times

- Sleep

- Finish another task in 15 min with, again based on your assumption, a success rate of 100%

In start-ups there is usually a near endless list of tasks to solve so this would be the most productive approach. Again, based on a lot of assumptions.

inglondon··on New Cities
These are some of the things that come to mind:

- Prioritise streets for walking / light autonomous electric vehicle use

- Build underground streets or lanes that are designed for an autonomous delivery network. Getting rid of trucks and other large vehicles from the ground level road network will greatly easy congestion

- Zone for indoor / vertical farms for delivery to local stores

- Mix residential and commercial zones to allow for short commute times for residents

- Metro to speed up longer trips within the city

Utopian, yes. Impossible, no. [Edited for formatting]

inglondon··on AI, Apple and Google
I spent a couple days in Idaho this week and went on a few hikes. Google Maps had all the trails accurately mapped while Apple Maps was just a blank space with no information whatsoever. I don't know if it's a personal preference by now but I've also tried to use Apple Maps in cities around the US and Europe but always end up reverting to Google Maps because of their interface and search functions.

Just last week, thyroid tumors were reclassified and are no longer considered cancer. [http://www.nytimes.com/2016/04/15/health/thyroid-tumor-cance...]

From the article 'Instead of calling it “encapsulated follicular variant of papillary thyroid carcinoma,” they now call it “noninvasive follicular thyroid neoplasm with papillary-like nuclear features,” or NIFTP. The word “carcinoma” is gone.'.

Tha simplest and best advice I've read was in an article called 'We should all eat more DNA' [http://blog.oup.com/2016/01/we-should-all-eat-more-dna/].

It follows one simple guideline 'Avoid anything that lacks DNA.'.

inglondon··on Firefox 29
Just made the switch from Chrome to Firefox. I noticed that even on a high-end Macbook Pro, when I opened a large amount of tabs in quick succession Chrome would lag intolerably. It did so on earlier releases of Firefox but I just tried on 29 and it opened 40+ tabs with without a hick-up. Very pleased indeed

Edit: I just noticed that the text selection now works as it does in text editors with blinking cursor and all. Great feature!

inglondon··on How we pay royalties: an overview
If you listen to any hip-hop track made in the last 5 years you will find that is already the case with a good percentage of said tracks. I met a guy recently who's only job was to find brands to partner with this young but fairly well known hip-hop artist. He charges around $500,000 per mention. It should be possible to calculate rough revenues by going through lyrics on Rap Genius.
inglondon··on My first Mac App - a distraction-free note taking app
Congratulations! The app is great and I have been using it for the last couple of days.

One thing I would love to see is an option for strikethrough in addition to bold, italic and underline. I'm using the app as my todo list and it would be a great addition.

inglondon··on Google Drive
When running the Google Drive OSX application the CPU goes into overdrive while syncing my local files to the Google servers and pushes the CPU temperature to around 100° Celsius. Is anyone else experiencing the same issues?
inglondon··on My experience outsourcing manufacturing to China
Through a separate list I found a couple of companies: http://www.spielkarten.com/ http://philos.quasarshop.de/Home.asp?Lang=D http://www.dalnegro.com/ (Italian company)

I have never dealt with playing cards specifically so I cannot give concrete advice on this market but as with most products that I have had to source, I have found that most people are very helpful if you either write to them or pick up the phone and call and ask for advice. Since the playing cards market is not that big I am sure that companies are more than willing to give advice to entrants to this specific field.

I have done all my printing in Germany for a few years now and can also highly recommend it. The companies we have dealt with have been excellent in proofing the data. They have gotten back to me because an image was fractions of a millimetre off compared to other images in my brochure and similar minuscule details that make the difference between a good and a great product.

The best way is to use Google Translate and find the German name of the product you want to manufacture and search like that since a lot of sites are in German only.

We are based in the UK so we're getting the benefits of being in the EU but even for the US market it might be worth looking into.
