infotropy··on OpenClaw Is the Right Idea with the Wrong Defaults
I recently wrote about the PKM automation stack I run on a Mac + VPS with Tailscale, background agents, and Claude Code skills. A few people pointed out it's basically OpenClaw. They're right — same architecture, very different security posture. This post compares the defaults.

infotropy··on Why am I dreaming I have an exam I didn't study for?
This is the more interesting question, I think. 30+ years later still having dreams about exams for classes I forgot to drop, exams I didn’t study for, etc etc.

Having dreams about upcoming exams seems obvious compared to why a lot of us have dreams years and decades after your college years are over.

infotropy··on Show HN: Bebop – an iOS app for capturing notes as iCloud-synced txt/md files
You may not have intended this use case, but Bebop serves as a really nice and quick front end for getting notes into Obsidian. I just set the Bebop save directory to the same as my Obsidian Vault inbox and I’m good to go. A widget would be a great add to quickly add content from the home screen.
infotropy··on Reasons not to take Lumina's anticavity probiotic
Came here to be “that guy”. Never had a single cavity in over 50years of being alive and have really bad dental care habits. I brush once a day for about 30 seconds, don’t really floss and have gone up to 6 years between cleanings.

I don’t eat a lot of processed foods or foods high in sugar, but I don’t completely abstain from them either.

Nothing to do with Lumina directly, but I’ve always been curious about my dental microbiome and how something about it is different from others.

I often worry about new products like Lumina upsetting whatever balance I’ve got going on.

infotropy··on Show HN: I built an open-source data copy tool called ingestr
Looks really interesting and definitely a use case I face over and over again. The name just breaks my brain, I want it to be an R package but it’s Python. Just gives me a mild headache.
infotropy··on Institutions try to preserve the problem to which they are the solution
It’s like the old consulting adage: “If you’re not part of the solution, there’s money to be made by prolonging the problem.”

infotropy··on Origin of mysterious green 'ghosts' in the sky has been discovered
Yeah, it’s GOST not GHOST. maybe they spell the acronym as GhOST or G(h)OST to add to the number of skipped characters.
infotropy··on Show HN: iOS app – Random thoughts to clean text
Both the “Get the TestFlight” buttons lead to a Stripe checkout for nanodevpro.com totaling $79. At least on mobile they do.

infotropy··on Show HN: AI Collected, Human Curated News Digest
Tiny suggestion, add the time zone of the daily update to the 8am on your website. It appears to be Eastern (UTC-4 at time of comment) but this could be due to fact that I’m in the Eastern time zone.
infotropy··on 85% of AI Startups Will Be Out of Business in 3 Years, Major Investor Says
Cherry-picking maybe? You’re selecting only the data that supports your argument.
infotropy··on Brave Browser introduces vertical tabs
It does. arc’s my daily driver. Best vertical tabs implementation I’ve run across (for me).
infotropy··on You Have a New Memory
I am genuinely concerned about the author's mental well-being. This is not an ad hominem attack. Based on the limited sample size of this one article, I am genuinely worried. I sincerely hope they are aware of the help available and are willing to seek it. As someone who also struggles with mental health and has recently sought help beyond medication, I have become more attuned to mental health issues in others.
infotropy··on Kombucha cultures can be turned into flexible electric circuit boards
Oddly not paywalled for me but yes, the article is based on that preprint.
infotropy··on Why Twitter didn’t go down: From a real Twitter SRE
I usually rephrase it as “getting run over by the lottery” or “winning a bus”. Just to be different/humorous/less morbid.
infotropy··on Dissecting a Dummy Promo MiniDisc
Exactly why I had one as well. I never felt more sci-if than using my MD player. I actually miss that thing. The build quality was amazing.
infotropy··on Apple Rankings
I’ll come to the defense of Arkansas Blacks. They are definitely better than Red Delicious. They’re just really hard and quite tart with a faint green flesh. Red Delicious are mealy and tasteless.

I love the Arkansas Blacks, but they wouldn’t be everyone’s cup of tea.

infotropy··on Ask HN: How did you learn to draw diagrams?
> draw real time as you explain, which allows you to draw based on audience understanding and what you want to focus on

This is critical. While I took formal flow charting and diagramming in college, it can’t replace real time diagramming as you explain.

When I was in consulting, we would often project Visio diagrams on a whiteboard and then extend them using markers. As we moved through the explanation process. My Visio jockey would the transcribe the whiteboard notation to Visio diagrams once we all agreed on the approach. This allowed us to collaborate with the flexibility of a whiteboard while confirming and capturing the final documentation as we went.

infotropy··on Show HN: Worble, a Wordle-inspired word game
As the word changes, do the green letters I may have gotten always remain green? They remain valid letters and always stay in the same location?
infotropy··on Ask HN: Non-violent video games with great stories?
I have not played Disco yet, but have been tempted. Thanks for the comparison to The City & The City, easily one of my favorite books and such a mind bend. If you’ve not watched Counterpart with J.K. Simons is very similar in feel, to me at least. Shame it was never finished.

infotropy··on A Fast Excel Formula Parser and Evaluator
It seems interesting but their acquisition by Databricks stopped development on Bamboo last year.
infotropy··on A Fast Excel Formula Parser and Evaluator
Not sure about the cross compatibility to Libre and Google, but in Excel at least, replace your cell references with INDIRECT() references. Then store the cell you want to calculate on in another cell…say A1 (literally just type C1 in A1). Then reference with INDIRECT(“&$A$1&”). Saves you the search and replace for A1. Also works great if you want to copy formulas across tons of columns and maintain the correct column header references as you can insert the INDIRECT reference into table notation.
