Penguin of the Year

Was wondering why this was on hacker news, then saw that one of the penguins was called "Mr Mac.".

Clearly the national aquarium of New Zealand is excited by the progress of the asahi linux project and is saying that this year is the year of the linux desktop.

yes

Mr. Mac is the one with a big mouth. Maybe just a coincidence. Anyway, nice page, nice pinguins.

I voted for Mr. Mac before I read the comments, exactly for this reason.

Despite spending a lot of time with Mr Mac, I fear Draco's chances of success in this contest are slim, given the unfortunate connotations of the name.

They should name one Linus.

And one named Richard

Better hope it doesn't gross out visitors by munching on something it picked off its own flippers

It would need to be kept far away from parrots

Is a cool web. The part of the globe is an interesting way to show data online at real time.

Dora is running away with it [0]. I suspect fowl play.

She was voted Naughty penguin of the month multiple times [0], so if there’s anything fishy going on I suspect her to be behind the scheme herself.

Definitely not as adorable as she looks!

I like Dora. She looks a bit like Tux.

if anyone else wants to watch the votes as they come in:

  curl https://data.napier.govt.nz/regional/nationalaquarium/poy2022/bin/data/last.votes.php | jq '.[] | .penguinName' -r | sort | uniq -c | sort -nr

just realised it's a static list after checking if it would change... probably just example data for their animation. (which I assume is fake and doesn't represent voting.

I can only appeal not to vote based on appearances, but to consider the platform each candidate is running on ;-)

They all run on fish. Is there any distribution where this is the default shell ?

Garuda Linux [0] uses fish by default iirc.

UI issue... when you click on a penguin and then click the "Vote For" button, it sends you to the form below, however your penguin isn't selected, you have to select it again.

I hope fivethirtyeight are keeping eyes on this

Timmy for the win!

We in HongKong are experts on penguins obviously.

Not.

Martin’s just happy to be here.

team Flip assemble!

You have my sword!

are these all juvinile penguins?

These are "Little Penguins"[0][1].

Apparently they have a lifespan of ~6.5 years but there's quite a few of these that are exceeding that expectation quite well.
