info781··on Tell HN: As a dev, Slack has ruined my life
Just call people and talk to them, then you can get a read on their inflections etc, ask if it is ok to chat for five minutes. Don't just blast out IM's.

Learn to play tennis. Take some lessons, don't worry if you are not very good. I guarantee you will meet someone, guy or girl. It is a great social activity that you can't do alone.

info781··on Ask HN: How do you deal with getting old and feeling lost?
Great advice, learning another language gets your brain going and into social situations. He sounds lonely.
info781··on Walking America: Washington, DC (Anacostia and Alexandria)
DC is a fantastic place to walk, especially in the spring and fall. I lived in a crystal city apartment for a year , it has a fun restaurant area on 23rd. Amazon is setting up there, it has subway and train access. They are building a pedestrian walkway to the airport, it has a great future. You are a mile from the airport but not much noise as they come over the river.
info781··on Germany to admit 400k skilled immigrants annually
The USA is not short of labor it is short of trained labor especially in the trades and hospitality industries. Illegal immigration in the last decade decimated participation in those industries and many people turned to drugs and made themselves unemployable. College level training is excellent but hands on training especially at the community college level needs to be revamped. The USA issues over one million green cards per year far more than any where else.
info781··on Large percentage fear having children because of climate crisis
This is not what I hear. It is a golden age for women, they can have lots of kids or none, up to them, that is a great thing. Everywhere you go is far more crowded than 30 years ago, Europeans and people from South East Asia are very aware of that. People want to have fewer kids and educate those kids more. Climate change is important but not a direct factor.
info781··on An old programmer loses his job
Not to be mean, but he has worked in the US for 30 years and does not have a 401(k)? He says he can not live on social security alone, so he has not saved a dime? I could understand it from a manual laborer, but from someone in a profession where research skills are critical?
info781··on South Korea: The only middle power of its kind
We have lots of people on earth, they just need to be able to move to where they want to go. Low birthrate issue is nonsense. Let a couple million people from the Philippines in to Korea problem solved.
info781··on Employee shortages: Where have all the workers gone?
If you offer an American a choice between more money or more vacation, they will take the money, for the most part.
info781··on Wall Street Takes Workers’ Retirement Money and Uses It Against Them
So they feel they can not just put it all into VOO and VTI? Buffet has been saying for a long time it is tough to beat these two due to low fees.
info781··on Canadian property bubble nears systemic failure
In Canada there is no 30 year fixed product. Most people float month to month. Since interest rates have been dropping since 2002 prices will go up. Australia is very similar.
info781··on How Not to Build a Country: Canada’s Late Soviet Pessimism(2019)
Resource extraction industries in Canada will always take a bulk of the engineering talent, that is where the money is. Venture capital for mining is well established in Canada. As for real estate, everyone uses floating mortgages, so prices will stay high until interest rates go up. Salaries in Canada are structured differently. Because taxes on income over $80,000 a year are very high, deferred compensation such as pensions and real estate gains are more important. Barter or cash jobs are another important source of income. Americans would never tolerate the rationing that Canadians go through for health care.
info781··on The unusual ways Western parents raise children
Argentina is pretty messed up, low trust culture, outside of the family.
info781··on CDC website built by Deloitte at a cost of $44M is abandoned due to bugs
We had to live with sites than only ran in IE for years.
info781··on CDC website built by Deloitte at a cost of $44M is abandoned due to bugs
Nothing against your company, but when smaller companies get good long term contracts, they get bought up by larger companies and the good people leave and start new smaller companies.
info781··on CDC website built by Deloitte at a cost of $44M is abandoned due to bugs
Good people want to work at places with stock options and bonuses for good performance, the government can not offer that. Government is more suited for people interested in management, not pure technical people
info781··on CDC website built by Deloitte at a cost of $44M is abandoned due to bugs
These big companies always have a lot of overhead. The middle layers of management are useless. Often the government will try to work with smaller companies that are under 50 people. However, if these small companies land good contracts the big companies will buy them up.
info781··on Lifting Self-Imposed Restrictions on the U.S.-Taiwan Relationship
Don't like Trump, but this is long overdue, China needs to move to Taiwan system of government, not the other way around and end this "Chinese Taipei" name nonsense.
info781··on We deleted the production database by accident
Not really they lost a day of data, toy database.
info781··on We deleted the production database by accident
Why did they not have archive log mode on in production? Losing a db is one thing, but should have only been one hour of data lost.
info781··on Japan’s lost generation is still jobless and living with their parents
I blame the parents for this, they should have kicked the kids out of the house when they were 22. Then they could live with roommates, men and women and learn how to live. There was a show about that in the '90s bunch of good-looking men and women and sometimes a monkey. I can't remember the name of it though.
info781··on My failed music career
It seems like concert pianist or nothing? There is lots of work for studio players or joining a band. Creativity is king , there is only so much room to play cover tunes many pianists publish on youtube.
info781··on The World of Legacy IT Systems
A salesman will call anything that is not his product "legacy" so the word can get confusing. Also there is an issue when commercial vendors start to overcharge, and their software needs to be replaced with some thing cheaper. This can become a higher priority than replacing COBAL.
