infinite_snoop··on Show HN: Front-end framework optimized for internal apps
I'm doing a lot of SAP/OpenUI5 development at the moment and performance seems good. I believe the .war is only needed as a one off if you need to deploy the UI5 libs to a Java server? I'm deploying to SAP systems which already host the libraries so I haven't had that issue. One click deploying from Eclipse is built into the UI5 plugin.

UI5 obviously has the weight of SAP behind it (be that for good or bad!) and new releases seem pretty frequent. For developing web apps to consume SAP data at least it seems the obvious choice (it's very much geared towards consuming oData which SAP Gateway provides).

infinite_snoop··on Ask HN: How was your experience using parse.com?
Aside from the price there seems to be a few bugs that have been lingering around for a year or longer with no fix in sight.

One that I have encountered is when uploading files, the progress callback jumps from 0% to 100%. https://www.parse.com/questions/parsefile-progresscallback

The annoying thing is the documentation states: "It's easy to get the progress of both uploads and downloads using ParseFile by passing a ProgressCallback to saveInBackground and getDataInBackground." and provides a code snippet that doesn't work and hasn't worked for two years. Please fix the bug or change the documentation!

infinite_snoop··on Yo App Allegedly Hacked By College Students
I'm interested in how you can conceal these API keys in Android, there does not seem to be any recommended approach.

Obscure methods like wrapping them up in C native code get mentioned. I'm assuming Proguard does not help?

infinite_snoop··on Yo App Allegedly Hacked By College Students
Ok, I took another look and all the Parse keys are in a very obvious place!
infinite_snoop··on Yo App Allegedly Hacked By College Students
Probably, I took it apart and had a quick look but couldn't find the key. I only had a quick scan of the Application and Activity classes though and did a search for Parse.initialize (where the key is passed in)
infinite_snoop··on This app says 'yo' and has raised $1 million
Ok, answered my own question, it contains the Parse library.
infinite_snoop··on This app says 'yo' and has raised $1 million
Out of interest, would you mind sharing what backend they are using?

Is it something like Parse or a custom development?

infinite_snoop··on Conceal, a fast Android crypto lib for SD storage.
Can this be used to hide API keys? It's fairly trivial to decompile an APK file. As another poster pointed out the key for Conceal would need to be stored somewhere also.

Any ideas or best practises of hiding API keys? Google has not turned up much. This Stackoverflow suggests storing keys remotely, but surely that too would be trivial to hack:

infinite_snoop··on Windows Phone doubles share in Europe, trails iPhone by only 1% in Germany
I have a Win 8 tablet and the app store is a complete joke. I don't think the "use the browser" argument really holds any water. Lots of UX features are only really available when you go the native route, i.e the new "picture in picture" feature in the Android Youtube app.

Is the missing micro SD slot due to price or to encourage you to move your data to the cloud I wonder?
infinite_snoop··on Google Treks
I've noticed two features silently vanishing from my galaxy s2. Installed apps no longer appear in the search results from the Google Now widget and I no longer have the option to download a complete email in th ebuilt in email client.

Have these been removed due to patents?

infinite_snoop··on Why Ireland is the best place in the world for a start-up
After five years in the UK I can say the rain is one of the things I miss the most!

On an anecdotal note most of the CS graduates that I know are not in Ireland any more but are split evenly between the UK and Australia. Also, Dublin is obscenely expensive in my experience.

infinite_snoop··on Ask HN: Hacker wannabe demotivated & depressed in need of help
You already know Java so you have a huge stepping stone into the Android world, buy a book and work through the examples and then start your own project, start small as other people have suggested. It's hugely satisfying watching your app being downloaded and used!

Great! It's just a shame that all of my friends have died of old age waiting for the invite period to finish.

Seriously, what was the reasoning for this? It's not like Google don't have the infrastructure/capability to scale quickly.

Hey James, Your question encouraged me to look into this myself as I'm working in Manchester a lot at the moment.

I came across this which might interest you: http://madlab.org.uk/events/

I even added a calendar event to my Outlook to remind me of the Android meetup but I'm not sure if I will pluck up the courage to attend!

infinite_snoop··on What’s happening to the next generation of the SAP ecosystem?
While SAP is not exactly cutting edge they have been adding some features to ABAP (their proprietary language) that you would expect to find in a modern language.

For instance, in your example you could use the CALL TRANSFORMATION statement to convert your table directly to XML.

The problem is that you can still write code as you would have done in the 1970's and SAP won't complain.
