indenturedsmile··on An LSD Trip “Off-Switch” May Be Coming Soon
Anecdotally, one of the best treatments for social anxiety I've found is to always know where the exits are. At a concert, identify the exit signs. In a conversation, have someone who can take over for you.

Knowing there's a way out of the situation can completely nullify the scariness of that situation.

indenturedsmile··on Ask HN: What are some more authentic online forums?
I still think https://www.homebrewtalk.com/forum/ is the premier forum for homebrewing (as in alcohol) information. All the various homebrew subreddits and other forums seem lacking in either content, organization, or expertise.
indenturedsmile··on Why did we wait so long for the bicycle?
I don't have a source, and maybe I'm misremembering, but I think compilers (for software) and CPU production tooling (for hardware) both bootstrap off their own performance.

A better compiler can compile itself more efficiently, same for CPU/chip layout systems.

indenturedsmile··on Facebook is building its own Steam-style desktop gaming platform with Unity
While I agree most of the time, there are still great games made with Unity. I think the problem is more around the ease of use for developers. They might not make performance or "feel" a priority when it's so easy to make a game that's "good enough".

Inside was a Unity game, and it was a dream to play from a technical perspective.

Which would have immediately warmed back up with his body heat and acted as an insulator.
indenturedsmile··on My Dad Tried to Kill Me with an Alligator
There were definitely alligators. I doubt the author was trying to say they were afraid of their own imaginations. It's possible that he imagined the alligator that was next to him in the water, but it's equally possible that he wasn't.
indenturedsmile··on A simple Minecraft written in Rust
But the world files are just the save files. As far as I know, there are no texture or object data in the saves.

indenturedsmile··on Physicists Create Quantum Link Between Photons That Don't Exist at the Same Time
Do you have any sources for experiments ruling out our universe being deterministic? I'm not questioning you. I honestly have always been intrigued with the idea. Thanks.

Yeah, that's cool. I chuckled at your comment, and I didn't downvote (I can't. Guess I don't have enough karma). Just trying to abide by the guidelines (http://ycombinator.com/newsguidelines.html).

Very true. That's how I knew the meme. I saw it on reddit which I also frequent. However, that doesn't mean we should introduce them here. They don't add to Hacker News discussion.
indenturedsmile··on Ubuntu Spyware: What to Do?
The difference between this and your rotting fish analogy is that there is no objective way to say that Ubuntu search surveillance is harmful. Rotten fish can objectively be proven to make you sick. Giving targeted ads may be a useful feature for some users.

In this case, you should not tell people not to use Ubuntu. It's a personal preference, not something that is physically harmful. What should be done is educating people about how their information can be used. If they find that their personal information is being used to provide a service they like, they can make their own decision. Personally, if I have to see ads, I'd prefer they are for things I may actually be interested in.

indenturedsmile··on Explaining coder's block to non-coders
I never have an issue with this at work. Clients give us specifications, so deciding what I need to solve is never a problem. I definitely have this issue on personal projects though. It's often because I'm still trying to figure out the problem space.

I agree with nsxwolf, this is more of a designer's block than coder's block.
