A lot of the people I see recommending it, including myself, listened to the audiobook. I think Kevin R Free really brings it alive.
imzadi··on Every board game rulebook is awful [pdf]
The rulebooks are the worst part of the hobby. Some are beyond awful. One Deck Dungeon took me several attempts and a few google searches to figure out.

Another bad one was the travel version of Azul, which assumes you have already played the full size version.

Bobiverse is great but the latest book is too much like the Expeditionary Force books without Skippy.

Another good one is Service Model by Adrian Tchaikovsky

Also, I feel like if I am recommending something I have to recommend Dungeon Crawler Carl, which is my current obsession. I've read all the books multiple times in multiple formats, but it's not much like Murderbot.

imzadi··on Three-Quarters of U.S. Adults Are Now Overweight or Obese
I don't drink soda at all. I have used food journals for years.
imzadi··on Three-Quarters of U.S. Adults Are Now Overweight or Obese
I don't understand why when it comes to weight critical thinking goes out the door. People always point to these things and say weight causes them, but no one ever considers these things may actually lead to people gaining weight. I say this as a person who has struggled with weight their whole life. I've spent 40 years having every issue dismissed by doctors with a "you just need to lose weight," while I sit at a dinner table with friends and family eating significantly less than everyone and still gaining weight. It's like people are so committed to the idea of weight gain being a moral failing, they won't consider for even a minute that people are gaining weight for other reasons.
imzadi··on 300 people applied to rent $700/month sleeping pods in downtown San Francisco
No one is talking about the inherent sexism in this. They're only talking to men. Only showing men living in these. This would very likely NOT work for women at all.
imzadi··on How to Train Yourself to Go to Sleep Earlier
I have a lot of shoulder issues that are worsened by sleeping on my side or stomach. I also have a flat spot on the side of my face from always sleeping on it, and it gets worse the older I get. I'd like to be able to use overnight skin treatments without it getting all over my pillow.
imzadi··on How to Train Yourself to Go to Sleep Earlier
I wish I could train myself to sleep on my back. I've been trying for years, but I can't seem to fall asleep without the pressure of the pillow on my face.
imzadi··on Crossing the USA by Train
I took a train from DC to Sacramento in 1999. It was... an experience.

If you have a library card, check out Hoopla
imzadi··on UEVR: An Exploration of Advanced Game Hacking Techniques (2023)
I'm a VR enthusiast. My friends and I play multiplayer VR games several hours a week. UEVR definitely opened up a lot of new options for us, but ultimately we tend to fall back on existing titles that have been optimized for VR (i.e., phasmaphobia, devour, demeo, forewarned, etc). It's a great tool though, and I hope it could lead to developers making their own vr implementations.

I think for a long time there was an idea that VR had to be a separate thing from traditional gaming, but now developers are seeing that they can use it to extend their existing games to a new audience. I dream of a day where any first person game is just automatically also optimized for VR.

I'm hearing good things about the Palma. I currently have a first gen paperwhite and am looking to upgrade. I'm thinking either the palma or the kobo libra color. They are about the same price, I think.

They haven't given me my monolith, so no contract established

imzadi··on Suicide Rates by Industry and Occupation
I'm really curious why Agricultural and food scientists are the highest (among men). I have lots of theories, but nothing based on facts, so I'll keep them to myself.
imzadi··on Canvas is a new way to write and code with ChatGPT
Kind of wish there weren't a dozen different tools named Canvas
imzadi··on California bans legacy admissions at private universities
What if it is just removing state funding from those schools?
imzadi··on ESPN AI recap of Alex Morgan’s final professional match fails to mention her
According to the article, ESPN said that human editors would review the AI recaps to ensure accuracy, so it wasn't just the AI recap that decided to leave it out.
imzadi··on Apple's requirements are about to hit creators and fans on Patreon
I don't think this is up to the consumer. The companies should just pull their apps from the Apple marketplace. If something can be a website, just be a website. Why even mess with an app at all? It's not like consumers are clamoring for these apps. Everyone I know hates that you have to have an app for everything these days.
imzadi··on Is there a way to stop all the political text messages?
I would pay good money for an app that would block political texts and not send equally annoying notifications. I tried Robokiller, but you have to use their text messaging app, which is complete garbage.
imzadi··on Ask HN: Enterprise Solution Similar to Kagi?
Yeah, I meant UniFi. I've passed on the info about Umbrella. Thanks for the follow up.
imzadi··on Ask HN: Enterprise Solution Similar to Kagi?
I'll check with our network guy. I know we use unify and umbrella, but I don't know much beyond that.
imzadi··on Supreme Court rules ex-presidents have immunity for official acts
Nah, watergate happened before Nixon was even president.
imzadi··on Eating meat with lower carbon footprint often means killing more animals
I think the best tradeoff is being more mindful of waste and overconsumption. we're buying cheaper, lower quality, goods more often, which increases waste and uses more resources in the long term.
imzadi··on Microsoft forgot to renew their Office CDN certificate
Supposedly it's been renewed, but my users are still seeing the errors.
imzadi··on Liquid Layers
This is interesting. I wish the other interactions were as dramatic as the drag one. You have to really crank up the brush size to see anything interesting.
imzadi··on Should people who quit get unemployment benefits, too?
Yes. Employers should be incentivized to want to keep their employees. If employees are given some autonomy to leave poor working environments without bankrupting themselves, then employers will be motivated to improve the working environment.
