and as you mention...Americans seem to have no conception that Canada's healthcare system is presently a shambles and anyone with decent insurance in the US is much much better off
you could also just relocate in the US...figure out what is important to you and do some analysis on how different places stack up
finally, be careful about letting daily events direct your life strategy too much
also be realistic about life in other countries...I grew up near Toronto and can say with certainty it is no longer the zero-crime/very-clean stereotype many Americans believe...you just don't hear much about Canadian cities on US news but they also have serious crime now
American ad man transformed the image of a nation-sized race cult into a quaint provincial island of passive nobility.
don't think for a minute that dumb phones are actually a happening thing for gen z, on a whole they are likely the most zombified generation
HOW??? what does this even mean? does Kamala Harris get to put a camera in my house to make sure I don't watch Khan Academy videos on neural nets?
half this list just reads of people who have been toiling away in AI for years only to watch OpenAI walk off with the hype award. Sorry Mr. Bengio you will get an honorable mention, we promise
and Woz...seriously dude you have spent the last decade making yourself look like a lovable fool. go play with your grandkids
(and even in the twitter thread, someone makes the obvious call that many of the signatories probably just feel left behind, totally blindsided at the progress OpenAI has made while they just plod along)
not all AI is LLMs
take a deep breath folks, GPT does not have the launch codes
so maybe no taste isn't as bad as awful taste
"stop and wait for us to catch up!"
Is Elon stopping work on FSD? On computer vision for his robot? Thought not.
And does anyone really care what Woz has to say?
It's not that big of a deal though
Axum is popular but feels too low level to me, but some nice porcelain APIs might eventually be put on top of it
Potential for remote shutoff is not a feature
...but self-driving is still making incredible progress
lots of techies seem stuck in a mindset of "it doesn't work today, so it never will!"
why do you think you would comprehend it all in a few weeks?
hats off to the folks at OpenAI etc...they made a lifetime bet on AI and it paid off
they're taught systemic, structural racism, systemic, structural economic injustice, systemic, structural environmental injustice etc etc etc
before they even turn 21 they are told everything wrong with the world is their fault and nothing they can do will change that
for bonus points they are racking up $150k++ student debt to "learn" this
but this is also why no one in their right mind makes a public declaration of a family tragedy on a service like Twitter
the target is uneducated (in the financial sense) consumers who are enticed into making purchases they might otherwise not make (and probably shouldn't make)
Apple probably wants to get at the consumers who are still buying cheap Android phones who will be bowled over by the psychology of splitting the purchase price into installments
USA is bad but not the worst, this is a global plague
sad that Apple has had to resort to "financializing" their own customer base
but most people don't want to starve to fight climate change
which will lead to air freshener requiring a special license
if you want to be nitpicky, this app should be called Apple Symphonic
most of the symphonic music I prefer (late 19th century) would be considered from the romantic era
i.e. I don't consider Wagner to be "classical"
like...Philip Glass is not "classical" music...but he's a symphonic composer
yeah there is new stuff, but when we speak of "classical music", we're really talking about long-dead people
Dvorak isn't going to be composing any new works, you can actually listen to everything Dvorak ever created and then you're "done"
afaik school shootings are a tiny fraction of youth gun homicides
similarly, "assault rifles" represent a tiny fraction of all gun homicides
- Religion: we still act with religious devotion, but now it is directed towards consumer brands, not a supernatural entity
- Hard Work: the US pretty much exists at this point to accelerate wealth inequality, so this one is pretty sensible
- Patriotism: would you volunteer to stand around a burn pit in Iraq? me neither
- Having Kids: its a personal choice, but your coworkers will not be at your funeral. I expect lots of folks burned out on careerism will try to backpedal on this one when it's too late
- Community Involvement: oh we're involved in our communities...we go on Nextdoor and scream at each other
the Money trend should be no news to Silicon Valley and HN which basically just exists to pursue $$$$
