imwally··on Solved by 1440p HiDPI: MacBook Pro 16“ is hot and noisy with an external monitor
This is the reason I swapped my 16” for the M1 Air. The silence is bliss.
imwally··on Endless scrolling through social media can literally make you sick
I always try Reader View to circumvent modals like that.
imwally··on Ask HN: Favorite purchases of last two years?
AirPods Pro: Noise cancellation in earbuds alone is worth the price but with the introduction of spatial audio in Apple Music, the price is even more justified. Listen to Radiohead's Live from the Basement!

MacBook Air M1: Dumb fast and dead silent. Everything I want from a computer.

Fellow Stagg EKG Electric Kettle: Great design and simple controls. Slowly weened myself off coffee and started drinking Yorkshire Gold tea at home. I use this every day, multiple times a day.

imwally··on Ask HN: What are some tools / libraries you built yourself?
https://github.com/imwally/battstat - CLI battery status indicator. https://github.com/imwally/untweet - destroy tweets and likes. https://github.com/imwally/linkview - like urlview but shows anchor text. Works great with mutt. https://github.com/imwally/pin - CLI pinboard client to add and manage bookmarks.
imwally··on The Unix Magic Poster
UNIX creator's initials on the cap. Dennis Richie, Ken Thompson, Brian Kernighan.
imwally··on Ask HN: What's your keyboard and what you love and hate about it?
Apple Magic Keyboard Wireless. It's small and light and has decent travel. The only setup is to remap caps lock -> ctrl so that I can use emacs-style keybindings throughout macOS.
imwally··on iOS 14.5 delivers Unlock iPhone with Apple Watch, new privacy controls, and more
You can still use Apple Pay with a passcode.
imwally··on New iMac with Vesa Mount
Hasn't Apple always offered a VESA mount version of the iMac?
imwally··on An HTTP server in a single .c file
I'm not being snarky, but is a "single .c file" a good metric? It could be a rather large single file, right?
imwally··on Ubiquiti starts serving ads in their management interface
Hmm, I'm still interested in a Dream Machine but I've been holding off for the so called SE[1], with the display on the front, similarly to the Amplifi Alien.

imwally··on Ubiquiti starts serving ads in their management interface
I had a Dream Machine (the all-in-one, not the pro) and it fried the very next day. Even after that I was willing to give Ubiquiti another try, but now I don’t know what to do.
imwally··on Regular afternoon naps linked to improved cognitive function
I’ve always been jealous of those who can nap. For whatever reason my body just doesn’t want to fall asleep. Even at night it usually takes me over an hour to fall asleep. Anyone else unable to nap?
imwally··on East Coast Internet Outage
On Fios here.
imwally··on East Coast Internet Outage
Yes, sites are loading very slowly, if at all. Thought it was AWS at first but Google services are having the same issue.
imwally··on Whitehouse.gov Chooses WordPress, Again
I was curious after seeing the accessibility statement what the previous administration's had.

https://www.whitehouse.gov/accessibility/

https://obamawhitehouse.archives.gov/accessibility

https://georgewbush-whitehouse.archives.gov/accessibility.ht...

https://trumpwhitehouse.archives.gov/accessibility

With that last one not being surprising at all.

imwally··on Whitehouse.gov Chooses WordPress, Again
Drupal uses twig for templating now.
imwally··on Fastmail was down
I'm a Fastmail user and I've been pretty happy with my mutt + mbsync / msmtp setup on macOS. It's nice to have a local copy of your mail at all times.
imwally··on macOS Big Sur
You can force a check in terminal with

imwally··on Apple Silicon M1 chip in MacBook Air outperforms high-end 16-inch MacBook Pro
Yeah, I'm not sure what's going on but I'm not the only one it seems.

Here's a 173 page thread on MacRumors about it: https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/16-is-hot-noisy-with-an...

imwally··on Apple Silicon M1 chip in MacBook Air outperforms high-end 16-inch MacBook Pro
I’ve always used 15” MBPs without external displays as my only computer for years. I like being mobile and don’t particularly like having a desktop + laptop. Since COVID I’ve been stuck at home so I decided to finally get an external monitor. The problem is that you can’t use the 16” with an external display and the lid open without the fans spinning at full speed. Some people don’t mind it but it drives me crazy. Now it’s hooked up to my display in clamshell mode. Do I need all of that power? No, but I did want the biggest screen at the time when I purchased it a year ago. I plan on selling it when the new Air comes in.

Replacing my 16" MBP (8 core i9 2.3ghz / 32GB RAM) with the new Air as well. All of that power (yes I know, it's not sustained) without a fan is incredible.
imwally··on McDonald's is adding plant-based burgers to the menu
This used to be a concern for me earlier on in my vegan years but I soon realized that veganism isn't about eating a "pure" diet, it's about the animals. The best thing for the animals is for these products to sell and I shouldn't let a little cross contamination deter me from that.
imwally··on The Charlie Brown Halloween special won’t air on network television this year
> The Halloween special, "It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown," premiered on Apple TV + on October 19 for Apple TV + subscribers, but Apple is also making it free to watch from October 30 through November 1.

imwally··on What Shell Am I Using?
Yeah, it's a little meta. I was afraid that what I was trying to say wouldn't quite come across. It's why I mentioned "the shell I'm currently typing in" so many times.
imwally··on What Shell Am I Using?
Apparently it does not:

I’ve read somewhere that they’ve been there since the NeXT days.
imwally··on Ask HN: What are your favorite developer-efficiency tips?
Remap the caps lock to control for emacs users :)
imwally··on Ask HN: What are your favorite developer-efficiency tips?
Emacs key bindings work system-wide on macOS. Having the same keys to navigate no matter what app you’re in is a huge productivity booster.
imwally··on Ask HN: Name one idea that changed your life
macOS has emacs style key bindings like this OS-wide.

Ctrl+e: end of line

Ctrl+a: beginning of line

Ctrl+p: go up a line

Ctrl+n: go down a line

Ctrl+f: go forward a character

Ctrl+b: go back a character

etc...

imwally··on Grab your crayons, it’s coloring time
Yup, I think just bumping up the font size alone makes a huge difference, along with increasing the line height and margins. I know some people dislike this trend but I quite like it. Panic uses a similar style for the Playdate website[1].
