imnotlost··on OpenAI backs Illinois bill that would limit when AI labs can be held liable
Obviously this is up to courts and juries to hammer out but...

- Your agentic loop hacked something? You're liable. - FSD crashes? The guy in the driver's seat is liable. He/his insurance can sue Tesla to spread the liability...

Nowhere along the line will anyone go "Oh, the AI did it... whoops"

imnotlost··on OpenAI backs Illinois bill that would limit when AI labs can be held liable
Am I alone in thinking this is easy?

The human making the decision is always liable.

What if the human couldn't reasonably know better? Doesn't matter - If they made the same decision without AI or with old files it is still on them.

What if there's no single human decision? Someone is in charge and is responsible. The "I was ordered to" isn't a defense.

Does liability without power make sense? People executing have the power to execute. So liability. If they're executing without power that is a different liability, but a liability.

It may let the powerful off the hook - That is already a theme and AI doesn't change that, in fact, it will just be used as another scapegoat.

God told me to do it - Water tight! Right?

The correct typeface for the current U.S. administration would of course be Comic Sans or perhaps Comic Serif for double-super-serious documents.

This work great for me too, when learning something new the LLM brings in all sorts of perspectives and contexts I don’t know about yet.

It pulls in info from the docs, forums, code samples, shows me how things are connected, and may even suggest why something is good or bad.

Plenty of opportunity to look up docs I didn’t even know about yet.

Just build a bunch of nuclear power plants around the world. If we can spend a trillion or two bombing the taliban back into power we can afford some energy projects.

imnotlost··on Summers: Inflation Reached 18% in 2022 Using the Government's Previous Formula
I understand, times are hard. Always were.

When was this chill time when we could just take off fishing for a week or two?

Random breakdown of time :) * 1800s * 1900-WW1 * WW1-WW2 * WW2-1980 * 1980-Now

And yeah, single breadwinner households were a thing back in the day it was generally because women didn't have a choice at all.

I'm pretty sure you have more options and choice today as to how you want to live your life, but if you want a family you gotta feed the little bastards one way or another, that has always been a "worry".

Ah, the 1850s when life was good!

The US Post is great and all, but I would gladly trade the US post for a large beaver-hunting territory!

Horses are too fast! Walking is better.

imnotlost··on Call to shut down Bristol schools’ use of app to ‘monitor’ pupils and families
The Brits have gone all in on the surveillance society with their CCTV cameras all over the place and now the Online Safety Bill. Still early days, I'm sure it'll be expanded at every opportunity. Maybe 1984 is the blueprint.

In the US the fundamental Christians are grabbing power and they're taking flamethrowers to books and talking about tracking women who may go across state-lines to get an abortion. Self-censorship for fear of being 'canceled' is putting a damper on the spirit of freedom. It's perhaps more along the lines of Fahrenheit 451.

May you live in interesting times.

imnotlost··on Is technical analysis just stock market astrology?
There is a well-worn joke in the economics profession that involves two economists – one young and one old – walking down the street together:

The young economist looks down and sees a $20 bill on the street and says, “Hey, look a twenty-dollar bill!”

Without even looking, his older and wiser colleague replies, “Nonsense. If there had been a twenty-dollar lying on the street, someone would have already picked it up by now.”

Don't think about actual pulse numbers and % of pulse numbers. If you're not thinking about quitting and almost falling off the rower you're not going hard enough.

If your lungs are burning and you're about to collapse after 30 seconds of activity the intensity is about right.

Do 30 seconds high intensity, then 90 seconds low intensity (don't sit down or stand still), repeat 8 times.

Rowing and sprinting works really well.

imnotlost··on Want to live in a van down by the river? Ford has a new vehicle for that
Van prices and van build prices are nuts in the US. Meanwhile in Europe you get a pretty nice van for about EUR 65K (including VAT and TUF).

imnotlost··on Europe now has so much natural gas that prices just dipped below zero
The headline should be that Europe as 0 storage capacity so people will pay to get rid of the natgas (someone else should store it).

This is a temporary problem and does not mean the natgas issues are solved for the winter.

There was a similar issue with oil storage in April 2020[1]

imnotlost··on Unreal Engine 5 is now available
I just created a new scene in Unity 2020.3.5 and terrain going out to 6000 and a simple camera fly-script to fly around and it all looks good to me - no shaking.

Using 32-bit floating point you'll have 0.1 accuracy up to 100000 at least.

Edit - I just realized 10cm accuracy is not great (and that I'm talking to myself) so I tested with 0.001 and that's stable up to 9000.

imnotlost··on Stronger hands lengthen your life
My friend is an electrician with a monster grip - he still had a heart attack!

Sounds like a correlation that misses the point, general health prolongs life, couch-potatoes die sooner and have worse quality of life their last 30 years or so. And setting up for good health in advanced age starts decades earlier.

Try comparing someone who does grip-strength training only vs someone who does heavy dead-lifts, both into their 80s.

My money will be on the dead-lift guy, not just having a better quality of life until his last day, but also living longer.

imnotlost··on Putin may be planning to pummel Kyiv into submission
You're not suggesting NATO saying "sure let's talk about membership" and Russia INVADING a country is the same but different "magnitude"?

It's up to Ukraine if they want to pursue NATO membership or any other agreement with any country or organization.

Russia has no say. It's not a negotiation between NATO and Russia. Russia isn't at the table. They can pine for old USSR glory all they want but nobody else wants that.

And the way Putin's been killing journalists and dissidents (in the UK no less), raiding the treasury, annexing Crimea, and other nonsense, I don't see them being invited to many negotiations in the future.

imnotlost··on Putin may be planning to pummel Kyiv into submission
I think economics is a major hurdle for Ukrainian EU membership. Their GDP/capita is less than $4,000. EU average is 8x that.

I'm sure there are many other issues as well.

imnotlost··on Putin may be planning to pummel Kyiv into submission
NATO membership is entirely voluntary.

As such, there haven't been any "pushing of boundaries" unless you presume Russia gets to decide what independent nations like Latvia, Estonia, Lithuania, Finland, Sweden, Ukraine, Georgia, Belarus, etc. may or may not do.
