imnotlost··on Global debt soars to 356% of GDP
Private sector debt can comfortably be discharged in bankruptcy and new things can grow - creative destruction.

Public sector debt in your own currency is all right, it's not like you can ever run out of money - print more of it.

Inflation? Eh, maybe in certain sectors but it's not like income is rising, nor is labor participation rates.

imnotlost··on The Hazards of Asset Allocation in a Late-Stage Major Bubble
Do you want to under-perform during all bull markets so it hurts less during the corrections?

If you stayed invested in the broad market through any bubble-pop you would be better off than aggressive diversification and hedging. Unless you can reliably time the tops and bottoms.

Where else will you invest? China? India? Rest of Asia? Europe? South America? Africa? Specific commodities?

Do you believe the next generations in the US will continue to create value or do you think this is the beginning of a perpetual decline?

imnotlost··on Flexible working shows 55% high performers compared to 36% for 40 hours/week
I did that in my teens, 20s, and early 30s.

Looking back I say F** that, what a waste of my youth.

I could've worked half and accomplished just as much, maybe more in different areas had I taken the time to explore not just more of the world but myself.

imnotlost··on The largest study to date on the genetic basis of sexuality (2019)
There's a huge difference between "policing of social norms" and equal rule of law for all regardless of who they choose to have sex with.

Maybe you can argue that it's fine for someone to choose not to be friends with gay people but it shouldn't be OK for the government withhold rights/law/healthcare/social security/education/electricity/water/etc because of it. Who cares if it's genetics or a choice.

imnotlost··on Ask HN: What's your best advice for someone turning 30 today?
Don't ask for advice, don't follow advice, don't give advice.

These people don't know you.

Learn to know yourself and make your own decisions, live your own life. It's yours to live and it'll be over way faster than you think.

imnotlost··on Amazon shortchanged drivers $61.7M in tips
The con is strong in America, always was, always will be. Just read about wage theft, it's sickening.
imnotlost··on Robinhood is automatically initiating GME sell orders on users' behalf
Apples to oranges.

The bank's collateral is its lien on the house. A bank is not interested in foreclosing as long as you keep paying interest + principal every month. In fact, if the value of your house drops 90% it is in your interest to drop the keys off at the bank and say: "You guys can have it".

A broker's collateral, when you buy on margin, is the security you bought. As the value drops, collateral goes towards 0. Of course they're going to cover their own a*. It's in the agreement you signed when you opened a margin account.

Nobody changed any terms.

imnotlost··on Robinhood is automatically initiating GME sell orders on users' behalf
Of course, you're literally borrowing money from them to buy securities.

imnotlost··on EU Commission: ‘No longer acceptable’ for platforms to take key decisions alone
Does that mean, in the EU context, that the EU (whatever EU organization that may be), or the individual EU nations can compel private companies to publish certain speech?

Are all EU citizens entitled to publish on Twitter for instance, and can the EU force Twitter to publish?

Is that the EU version of freedom of expression and information?

imnotlost··on How Developers Stop Learning: Rise of the Expert Beginner (2012)
Developers are supposed to do all this learning on their own time as well, right? No budget or time for training. In fact, why don't you do some overtime paid in pizza?

Learn new stuff at home on your own time, put it on github, it'll be fun, ignore your family and your friends.

And the helpful comments here for someone who is doing 12-hour days is to meditate and go for a walk?

imnotlost··on Credit Karma glitch exposed users to other people’s accounts
Even if you delete your account, they probably still keep and sell your data to anyone who asks.

Is there any way to force a US company to scrub your data, including from logs and backups?

imnotlost··on In Japan, It’s a Riveting TV Plot: Can a Worker Go Home on Time?
>In addition to cultural attitudes about the value of hard work, she said, some employers reduce costs by relying on overtime, and employees work the longer hours for the extra pay and to please the boss — promotions often depend more on time spent at a desk than actual productivity.

The US game industry - except you don't get overtime pay (maybe pizza).

imnotlost··on One of the Greatest Environmental Crimes of the 20th Century
Perhaps it would be better to talk about the complete failure of planned economies[1] (centralized) VS the success of market economies[2](distributed). I guess you could do both systems under a totalitarian regime or a democratic regime.

Most pro-socialist talk in the US today is probably talking about a market economy with a better social safety nets for the regular population (at the cost of the wealthy), something like the Nordic model[3], not a re-imagined Soviet Union.

There's no way any discussion of Socialism, Communism, Capitalism, Marxism, Leninism, Stalinism, Whateverism on the internet will bear any fruit today. No one even knows what they're talking about.

imnotlost··on Higher Social Classes Have an Exaggerated Belief That They Are More Capable
But the noble poor man (or the noble savage if we look to the past) never cheats, lies, steals, etc. And if they do it’s for survival or family or some other sympathetic cause.

Or we’re all humans with normal human traits and egos to rationalize just about anything given the right circumstances.

imnotlost··on Bullshitters: Who Are They and What Do We Know about Their Lives? [pdf]
But it's not political, really. Both parties have different politicians shoveling different bullshit to different people. Same game, different target audience.

That's not to say genuine people/products/value doesn't exist but you have to dig through so much bullshit to find any of it.

imnotlost··on Bullshitters: Who Are They and What Do We Know about Their Lives? [pdf]
The US has a long history as the land of the bullshitter - the snake-oil sales men, the Psychics and Tarot card readers, the self-help authors, the "business coaches", MLM... the list is endless.

And people love it so much they'll gladly get into debt for it and even vote for the king of Bullshit for president.

imnotlost··on Kickstarter’s staff is unionizing
Just make free (paid in pizza) overtime illegal at the federal level and most of the work-life-balance issues would go away.

Add federal minimum vacation time too, 20 days at least.

"but but my margins!!!"
