It’s an advertising business. They sell advertising. Everything else is filler between the ads.

Network news runs on the same model.

Sometimes the filler (news or other content) is good but not always.

If it’s that serious and important - nationalize them and have the federal government run it.

Or you could call your congress people and ask them to increase funding for PBS or NPR or whatever. Or start a tax funded service.

Or start your own service. I’m sure you’ll welcome everyone’s suggestions on how to run it.

Or is it that you want someone else to run it, you don’t want to pay anything for it, don’t want to pay taxes for it, but you do want a say in how it’s run?

(Not you personally but y’all)

Fine.

You can’t force people or businesses to listen to you or broadcast your speech. That’s American liberty. That’s freedom.

You can’t claim that a business is “the public square” and then force them.

If you do want a digital public square look for something run by the government with a mandate to publish everything.

I’m pretty sure people wouldn’t be too happy with that either… too many libtards, too many nazis, too many racists, too many whatevers…

Re. big pharma, imagine how weary the roughly 400k families of people who dies feel.

"Three major drug distributors and the pharmaceutical giant Johnson & Johnson have agreed to a $26 billion settlement with states to resolve thousands of lawsuits over the country's opioid crisis, officials announced Wednesday."

https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/4-companies-near-26-bil...

None of these executives were anonymous or ever had to be. They made a ton of money doing bad things, they'll keep most of the money and they'll never go to prison.

They way you deal with this is, obviously in my mind, through the rule of law and a robust functioning society that regulates commerce. Not wild-west free market.

My point being, this went on for a long time before they got "busted" and the bank people knew who they were dealing with.

They didn't have to use crypto or tor or whatever to stay anonymous. They just used cash, everyone knew each other. They probably had dinners with coke and champagne. And when they did get "busted", somehow no one goes to prison, there's a small fine (relatively speaking), and everyone walks.

My guess is they're all still in business doing the same thing. The bankers, the regulators, the cartel people...

Or you can just be a known drug lord, launder billions of USD through a respected international bank, no one goes to jail, small fine, and they're probably still laundering 10 years later and no one cares. No one is anonymous. They're probably all using SMS and corporate email.

Sell a little bit of drugs through the silk road and you'll get royally f-ed! Sell all the opioids in the world through a public pharma corp and you can keep enjoying your jet-set life and yacht.

The allegedly smartest people in the world are focusing on the dumbest problems while being reamed by the frat-boys that went to Wall Street and Politics, guns and drugs. LULZ.

imnotlost··on What Do We Know About Time Pressure in Software Development?
Things would change if overtime was paid at a mandatory 1.5x and 2.0x. The true cost is always hidden because people "eager to please" work overtime for free (or for a slice of pizza).

How about public housing in DC for congress critters and senators? Windowless dorm rooms so they're tempted to go outside and do stuff instead of sitting inside watching tweets or whatever.

imnotlost··on Pedestrian fatalities are rising in the US
Either cars or pedestrians go - nothing else is safe.
imnotlost··on Pedestrian fatalities are rising in the US
Point taken, I don't know enough about individual solutions on the ground but fatality numbers are better, not just in Sweden but in multiple European countries.

Ideally pedestrian and cycling should be prioritized and vehicle traffic should be separated by rerouting, bridges, tunnels, barriers, and other physical means (probably cycling / pedestrian too).

imnotlost··on Do Developers Read Compiler Error Messages? [pdf]
No academics or research papers needed...

Double-click on the error-message, look at the code, fix the code, recompile.

Can't understand what's wrong with the code? read the error message for clues. Maybe SDK or language docs, maybe google to figure it out.

imnotlost··on Pedestrian fatalities are rising in the US
Let's see, off the top of my head...

Turn on red while the pedestrians get the signal to walk.

Drunk driving is very common.

Driver licensing requirements are extremely low (you have a pulse) and driver education is ridiculous compared to any other developed nation.

Road and intersection design is deadly wrong just about everywhere, traffic moving while people crossing, etc.

You could look at how other countries are improving this (look at Sweden) but let's be real - the US will never learn from other countries, that would obviously be a sign of some sort of weakness - redesigning roadways, nah, it's cheaper for people to die.

Charity is great but...

None of these issues will be improved, much less solved, through shaming and moralizing, hoping 330M individuals will make charitable contributions and recycle.

Give a can of food while doing your Christmas shopping so the super-corps can pay less tax and claim it gives to charity.

Just another systemic problem pushed to the individual, and swept under the rug.
