It's much harder to demonstrate the app doesn't have a backdoor, or doesn't leak your data in some obscure way, or doesn't weaken the entropy when creating the keys.

esp8266 is not even close to being a replacement for rPi. The specs are orders of magnitude worse. 160KB RAM, 1MB flash, 80MHz CPU, no GPU. None of the builtin modules for networking, wifi, etc.

Chances are, you don't live in a democracy anyway. Most "western" world is either a representative republic or the same mixed with a monarchy.

Start writing new features with the new framework. Rewrite the most used parts of the old one, as much as you can.

You will end up with a codebase with two frameworks. It's not the end of the world.

When we faced this issue, we did a complete rewrite. It actually reduced the amount of code and made everything nicer, legacy code is often full of hacks and undocumented nonsense.

It's not like there's a simple way to invest $1 and extract $44. That $44 is diluted in the total GDP. There's also a quite low limit on how many people you can vaccinate, even if you offer it for free.

This kind of thing is quite profitable for the government though, because they get to collect that $44, even if it is diluted.
