im_with_stupid··on Sperm whale dies with 100kg 'litter ball' in its stomach
Makes one wonder if the litter ball had any intrinsic value after being fetched from the whale.
im_with_stupid··on Canadian provinces band together to develop nuclear reactor technology
I'm with you 100%. One thing that people don't realize is that nuclear technology is the only fuel technology that has nuclear regulations. If coal has a little radioactivity in it, there's no limit to what radiation can be exposed to the atmosphere in burning it. I believe the same applies to oil, gasoline, and diesel.
im_with_stupid··on Clear backpacks, monitored emails: U.S. students under constant surveillance
You need a citation to believe that "the rejection of all religious and moral principles" would incentivize people to make their own "screw the system" morals? Really?
im_with_stupid··on Clear backpacks, monitored emails: U.S. students under constant surveillance
You have people teaching nihilism. This is the result of nihilism. If you want to eliminate this problem, then eliminate nihilism.

The solution to keep people from killing should focus on teaching others that life is not meaningless or worthless. Also, teaching kids humility wouldn't hurt either.

Edit: Perhaps this should be obvious, but teaching about nihilism is not teaching nihilism. People teach nihilism more, if anything, through their actions.

im_with_stupid··on The programmer behind the THERAC-25 Fiasco was never found
How is it malpractice for a single programmer/software engineer when a critical part of the code should have code reviews, software design in advance of creation of code which is approved by management? Not to mention thousands of tests with radiation detectors. How can you possibly miss so many safety gates without management being in the wrong?
im_with_stupid··on The programmer behind the THERAC-25 Fiasco was never found
The man over others is the responsible person. If you don't have this, you have no reasonable reason to be incorporated.
im_with_stupid··on The programmer behind the THERAC-25 Fiasco was never found
Why would someone assume that the programmer was to blame? The programmer just does what the managers tell him to do. Why should safety or security be about blaming the low man on the totem pole? It's totally ridiculous when you read accounts like that of the NASA engineer. https://www.npr.org/sections/thetwo-way/2012/02/06/146490064...
im_with_stupid··on Ask HN: Burning Out
Move on. You're never going to be paid more or rewarded more or recognized more where you are. Add everything to your resume, and find a place to compensate you for it. Since you're pretty well invested, talk to some managers about it. Mention your rational. If they drop you for mentioning, screw them. People that can't handle transparency don't deserve good employees.
im_with_stupid··on I'm not burned out, I'm pissed off
That might be true, but hacking without explicit consent is a good way to get fired with potential jail time.
im_with_stupid··on Federal safety agency launches probe of Tesla battery fires
So what you're stating is, the owners seem to carry most of the liability.
im_with_stupid··on Federal safety agency launches probe of Tesla battery fires
I'm not a fan of all of Tesla's management practices, but this does seem to be a bit of a knee jerk reaction. One company has less than 1% of all fires for the industry, and with a component with known combustibility.

Even if the electronics failed, leaving the driver stuck inside, you would think the owners would have the foresight to either have something capable of breaking windows or a method by which to break them.

I don't know what a proper drop bin looks like. If it's large enough for all packages, it's automatically large enough for someone to fit inside of.

The closest sufficient thing I can think of is a front patio that I'd leave unlocked for a mailman/mailwoman. They can then lock it if they leave a package, but I know the mail industry too well. The chances of having a carrier that actually locks things is pretty low. The problem has originated largely by an industry that delivers packages without concern of the theft that might occur. So you're going to blame me if I get fed up with theft and decide to install something that attempts every possible method of cooperating with police to prevent crime?

All I can say is, I hope you get every package stolen off your porch this holiday season. Maybe those "less fortunate" will benefit and you can be thankful for that.

im_with_stupid··on I'm not burned out, I'm pissed off
You'd get much less reprimand if this information was somehow leaked to someone else who then was stupid enough to do it, although to avoid any legal "abetting" you'd have to have some actual documented cya saying "don't mess with this broken feature".
im_with_stupid··on 737 Max Scandal Cuts Boeing's Once Rock-Solid Image
Well, I'm looking at air travel totally different. Where once I thought "Hey let's fly somewhere...", now I'm thinking more and more that local travel is more the way to go, since the rich turds in management can't even so much as own up to issues anymore.

As long as criminals find something more lucrative than stealing packages, I agree.
