illuminati1911··on Ask HN: Has YouTube peaked?
I would say the YouTube content is better than ever, but YouTube itself is shittier than ever. Removing dislike button/count, demonetizing people without valid reason, censorship, copyright trolls without bounds, absolutely insane amount ads before, in the middle of and after the video etc.

Without adblocker YouTube would be unsable.

illuminati1911··on $9.99/month
I would much rather support the developers and development of the software if they had honest and fair business model instead of this bullshit subscription scam.

App store used to be the gem and pinnacle of the software world still 10 years ago. People used to check out the app store selection during their coffee break etc. just to see what cool new apps are available now. Because of Apples strict policy lot of low effort garbage and malware apps were non-existent.

Now though the app store is pretty much like a shady warez website filled with "FREE" scam apps. For every single "FREE" or even Paid app you now have to instantly check the reviews to see what's wrong with the app and then read the in app purchases list.

FREE but PREMIUM MEMBERSHIP for the calculator is now only $9.99 a month or $499.90 for a lifetime license! Oh, but you can still use the free app, but you'll be limited to 4 calculations per week!

Streaming services I can understand to some extend, but the endless fragmentation, decreasing quality and rising prices are making them also pretty bad deal.

Maybe the EU regulation to force Apple open iPhone will at least fix the non-streaming app issue in EU.

illuminati1911··on Supply chain issues are killing synth companies
As someone living in Shanghai and who experienced the lockdowns here, the US media (as biased as they may be) picture is much more closer to reality than what you are saying.

The economy is in worst shape since 1992, Food and beverage industry is expecting to lose third of it's companies, property market is collapsing and going down first time for ages, Apple moved production out of China first time ever, several Fortune 500s moved their "tech hubs" etc. out of China, smaller rural banks are going down and preventing people from getting their money out, third of European companies are considering moving production out of here etc. and all this is just tip of the ice berg.

Maybe the government will find a way out of this mess, but right now things are darkest they've been for a while and we are now hearing rumors there is going to be another massive lockdown.

illuminati1911··on Ask HN: Are you cutting back on subscription services?
I started this cut back already couple of years ago.

I've had Spotify Premium for 12 years and will have it in the future too. The price and the content you get is more than fair and I'll be happy to pay it even if listen barely any music during some months.

Other than that and iCloud, I don't really use any streaming/subscription services.

Regarding video streaming I used to have Netflix, Amazon etc. but due to the endless fragmentation, continuously increasing prices and general decline in Hollywood quality where the focus of directors is in CGI, shoehorning woke-propaganda and hiring same boring overpaid and overused "top actors" to every single movie, it's just not worth it anymore.

illuminati1911··on EU approves legislation to regulate Apple, Google, Meta, and other tech firms
How do you know? It's not like I specifically was even talking about calculators. App store is pretty much 99% full of primitive "free" apps that all offer unreasonably expensive monthly payments and that's it. Whether it's calendar, email client, workout tracker, caloric intake/nutrition app or whatever they all have same business model: Offer crippled "free" version or unreasonable monthly payment plan.

I'll rather code a small app myself and host it myself than pay a 5/10/20/40 dollars a month for a app which actual value is 1 dollar (single payment).

illuminati1911··on EU approves legislation to regulate Apple, Google, Meta, and other tech firms
The github open source software costs $0. I’m fine paying that.

You can keep on paying $19.99/month for a calculator in Apple’s closed fake market if you want even after this regulation.

illuminati1911··on EU approves legislation to regulate Apple, Google, Meta, and other tech firms
I’m happy with this. Apple was begging for this with their narsistic and arrogant anti-consumer behavior.

Also app store these days is pretty much ruined. Almost all new apps are ”free” but in the end require a monthly membership or some other BS. Hopefully soon we can just pull apps directly from github releases.

illuminati1911··on EU approves legislation to regulate Apple, Google, Meta, and other tech firms
Here in China there is like 800 app stores for Android.
illuminati1911··on EU approves legislation to regulate Apple, Google, Meta, and other tech firms
I don’t think fucking around with EU regulators is something Apple should do here. They’ll probably revenge even with stronger further regulations later.
illuminati1911··on Watching an acquirer ruin your company
True, but usually in this kind of situations it's either zero planning or way too much planning and often the planning is also "wrong kind of" planning.
illuminati1911··on Watching an acquirer ruin your company
Classic. And when you tell incompetent management that 9 women can't deliver a baby in a month, they'll proceed to try with 10 women.
illuminati1911··on Watching an acquirer ruin your company
Problem is not the agile, but useless sinecure managers trying to rebrand "agile" as something in which projects don't need planning, can be completely chaotic and any requirements can be changed at anytime without affecting the deadline.

"Hey we don't really need to make any decision ever or even know what we are doing. That's the great thing about agile!"

illuminati1911··on Ask HN: I want my next startup to be in space tech. Where do I start?
Not saying you shouldn't go for space tech, but I know lots of people and some European tech companies who went into space tech. They all had pretty much same kind of experiences:

- Lots of regulations (for launching rockets, operating ground stations etc.)

- Everything is REALLY slow

- Very high risk (your 500k mini satellite may blow up with the rocket during launch)

- Things are very expensive and there are lots of (small and large) hidden/unknown fees that you'll face during the projects

illuminati1911··on Elon Musk on Remote Work
He is talking about ”minimum” so we can assume that pretty much everyone at Tesla is working past that amount of hours per week.

I don’t know all the places where Tesla operates but in some nations 40h per week is already overtime.

illuminati1911··on 1x Engineer
Most corporate "mid/project/release/etc"-managers are negative managers so I wouldn't mind being 1x engineer instead of "10x". At least I'm not causing damage.
illuminati1911··on How to professionally say
This is very helpful. Thank you so much.

Some of them might require slight changes depending on the context to not sound too passive aggressive.

illuminati1911··on DarkPattern.games: Find Healthy Mobile Games
If this site is legit then this awesome.

Mobile apps and games today are pretty much dead as far as iOS App store is concerned. 99% of new and featured apps and games are "free" and try to force you to either buy tokens or pay monthly fee or something as insane.

Even the most trivial sports tracker (how many reps/minutes etc.) apps try to make you pay ridiculous monthly fee or sell "lifetime" license for several hundreds of USDs.

illuminati1911··on Russian court accidentally confirmed Russian military presence in Ukraine
Grow up? US used NATO article 5 to get European NATO partners to join US wars in the middle east. The soldiers went there and died in US conflicts to help you with your ”war on terror”.

How about pay your fucking debt and keep Russia at bay.

illuminati1911··on Russian court accidentally confirmed Russian military presence in Ukraine
”The question is less about NATO deployments and more the will of NATO leadership to go to war with Russia over its more minor members.”

Not acting on this would completely destroy NATO and also permanently destroy US credibility on the world politics and in terms of military power. Realistically speaking NATO and US could not afford not to go to a war or at least armed conflict with Russia.

illuminati1911··on DoorDash Joins Forces with Wolt
For a mcdonalds meal worth of 5-7e, 3e delivery is a complete highway robbery.

If people will go get their own food, try to guess how much the delivery guy earn then when the whole business goes down?

From user of the service point-of-view, the salary of a middleman delivery guy is irrelevant. It's only about what service is being given and how much does it cost. If the cost is too high then people will simply not buy the service. Food delivery is not a necessity after all.

illuminati1911··on DoorDash Joins Forces with Wolt
Depends how you look at it.

Here in China (major cities) delivery is often free and when buying from delivery apps there are additional discount available that you can't get when visiting the restaurant.

So basically it's often cheaper to get food delivered to your home than going to the restaurant itself.

illuminati1911··on DoorDash Joins Forces with Wolt
I wonder if that's why they are now exiting. They can see that there is no future for this kind of business as governments crack down on the platform economy.
illuminati1911··on China’s noisy ‘dancing grannies’ silenced by device that disables speakers
I live in Shanghai and yes this is a real problem, but it's not just problem with square dancing, but older generations in general here.

While there are of course lot of polite civilized old people, many of them have absolutely no respect for environment or rules. You'll often see them throwing waste oil to the streets, littering, yelling/screaming in public for no reason, breaking every single traffic rule in existence, jumping the queue in supermarkets etc.

Lot of of younger and/or "less older" generations are also pissed off about this and local governments here in SH and elsewhere are trying to create new regulations to mitigate these issues: https://www.shine.cn/news/nation/2108183694/

illuminati1911··on When McDonalds Came to Denmark
” What really sets the Danish labour market apart from the rest of the Nordics, is how much easier it is to let employee's go when there's good reason or fire them when necessary.”

Thanks for sharing this, I had no idea. In Finland it’s pretty much impossible to fire someone unless they spend 100% of their time trying to destroy the company they work for.

illuminati1911··on When McDonalds Came to Denmark
As a Nordic citizen imo this is pretty much one sided left-wing propaganda article.

Yes it is true that unions have done some good things in the past, but today with their unreasonable strikes and mob/organized crime-style strategies they are driving most foreign investment away and also pushing long term industrial giants out of North Europe.

Unions are almost exclusively the reason why Finnish economy has been and keeps on tanking since 1990s.

illuminati1911··on Every engineer should do a stint in consulting
I guess in this saying what "consulting" means is some vague "Agile, SAFe" BS consulting. What is being talked here is a software consultants who actually create software.
illuminati1911··on Every engineer should do a stint in consulting
Yeah.

In Finland also the trend is that most "T-shaped" and experienced devs seem to be either in consulting freelancing or working for smaller consultancies (50-1000 ppl).

The big shops focusing on India outsourcing like IBM, Accenture, Deloitte etc. are a completely different thing.

illuminati1911··on New San Francisco Initiative to Pay Individuals Not to Shoot Others
This seems very problematic. You are basically rewarding criminals by giving them opportunity to get paid for not breaking the law.

Also how sustainable is this in the long term? How long will SF keep paying them? What happens if they stop paying some day?

"There are opportunities for participants to earn an additional $200 each month as they work to improve their community. Some ways they can earn more are by working, going to school and even being a mediator in situations that could lead to violence."

This sounds a bit better though.
