I don't think he was actually serious about copyrighting the term. I believe he was just using it as a figure of speech.
illdave··on 4 Insights from a Hacker News Launch
Congratulations on launching - I've been in a similar position with getting a HN spike and hitting email caps, but that's why I love Heroku (and SendGrid) for easily scaling things up, especially when I didn't really know what I was doing.

Do you guys have anything in place to alert you if you get another spike in traffic? If not, I'd recommend using Chartbeat and setting up alerts so that it emails/notifies your phone when you get a flood of traffic - you might find that press mentions pop up here and there and knowing about them straight away can help you fan the flames a bit. It's also pretty useful for when your site goes down as it instantly alerts you. Well done again - great job with launching.

illdave··on $100 to Fly Through the Airport
This appears to be remarkably corrupt.
illdave··on Visitor.js
I think geolocation using an IP address is known to not be particularly reliable when you try to drill down to the city level - having said that, it was spot on with my city.
illdave··on Ask HN: Did you learn a language this year?
I learnt Ruby this year, because I read Why's Poignant Guide to Ruby and it made me really excited about it's simplicity and readability. I used it to build Hackerbuddy.com.
illdave··on Find Hackers Near You
Hi - no it's nothing malicious. I'm running it, maybe I should add a bit more to the contact details page..
illdave··on Find Hackers Near You
Hi, I showed the Eightbit.me designer before I launched, and he was happy with me using those characters.
illdave··on Find Hackers Near You
Hi, thanks - that's definitely a bug I need to fix.
illdave··on A better Hackerbuddy
Thanks for the feedback - I know the slider doesn't work on the iPad, so it's definitely one to fix. Good idea about the live feed - I tried adding an auto-suggest bit but I couldn't get it to play nicely with the rest of the JavaScript, but it looks like it could be really useful, so I'll keep trying with it.

Thanks very much, glad you like it. I like the /username idea too so that's on my list of things to update (I'll make sure that everything redirects properly so you won't need to update your links if you don't want to).

I did the back-end as well as the front-end, although I cheated and based the design on a chopped-up Themeforest theme. I love Themeforest for things like this.

illdave··on A better Hackerbuddy
I am really impressed that you did that :)

I'll make sure when I'm updating the CSS to leave <pre> styled the same way it is - if I change anything that messes with your formatting, let me know - I don't want to break what you've done!

illdave··on A better Hackerbuddy
Ahha, thanks - and you're right, /:user would look cooler. I'll add it to my list of things to do.

I might add a quote from you to the homepage saying "I god damn love this", if that's ok?

illdave··on A better Hackerbuddy
Thanks!

It's running on Rails, and using Heroku - it looks like it's holding up fine (although if you have any issues or notice any errors or downtime, let me know)
illdave··on [dead]
I really like the look of this, and I can definitely see it being useful. I'm not 100% sure on the pro version idea though - the thing that I love about it is it's simplicity, and "more features" sounds like it might take away from that.

Having said that, there might be a market out there for people who want extra features - but the advice I'd give is to not just add on a Pro package for the sake of making money. Think about what could be of value to developers - whether it's a source of beta-testers, or a list of people who are ready to sign-up to their app when it's live.

illdave··on Ask HN: Who designed your logo?
Actually no, I've got some other logos designed for other projects from Dribbble designers, but not Typecast or Hackerbuddy (those sites actually don't really have proper logos..at least, not the first versions of them)
illdave··on Ask HN: Who designed your logo?
I've found great logo designers by looking through http://www.dribbble.com and getting in touch with designers whose logo work I like.
illdave··on Starting is easy. Finishing is hard. Finish something at Finish Weekend.
I had to double check to see it was Bootstrap, looks great.
illdave··on Duck Duck Go tells you your IP when you ask for it
Searching Duck Duck Go for "show hn" shows that you can search HNsearch with their !bang syntax: http://duckduckgo.com/?q=show+hn
illdave··on Plink, a multiplayer HTML5 music game
Really really impressive - surprisingly fun.
illdave··on Ryan Bates launches RailsCasts Pro
I signed up in the UK without any problems.
illdave··on An open letter to Stripe: please come to Europe
It's amazing that in 2011, launching a simple and elegant payment processor is enough to pretty much disrupt the industry. I'm really hoping Stripe can make it to the UK - I'd be incredibly happy to give them my percentage.
illdave··on Does the Google Bot index css hidden divs? yes.
It's true that Google is able to crawl and index content that's contained within a hidden div. Obviously don't use this to hide a load of text on a page to manipulate search results - you'll get caught if it wouldn't pass a manual review - but it's useful to know this if you've got a legitimate reason to do so (e.g. you've got a navigation that isn't revealed until a link is clicked, or a box that displays the contents of the hidden dev when a "More Info" link is clicked, etc).
illdave··on Hey Google, I want my cache links back
One of the things he mentions here is that some sites don't have a cached link at all - it may be because they're explicitly telling Google not to cache the page. You can do that using the noarchive tag, which looks like this:

<meta name="robots" content="noarchive" />

illdave··on Fuckit, I'm launching
Massive congratulations on launching - and it's a great, interesting idea as well (I'd help test it out for you, but I'm in the UK).

Like a lot of people have said, the pricing should be clear without having to watch the video. Personally, I think the graphic at the top looks great, but I'm not 100% sold on the video - there's something about it that doesn't seem overly professional (sorry). I might be the only one that thinks that, but if not - you could potentially try to get the information you need to say put into a similar graphic as the one you have at the top, rather than have people watch the video at all?

Good luck!

illdave··on Ask HN: Where do you get your design work done?
Check out the admin templates on ThemeForest.net, also have a look at Bootstrap by Twitter: http://twitter.github.com/bootstrap

You can always pay a talented designer to redesign your app if it starts to get a ton of users, until then these options let you focus on your code.

illdave··on Show HN: Weekend Project - Monthly Startup T-shirt Subscription
I like the idea, and I'd consider using it (if it was available outside of the US) just as a way of supporting startups. It'd be good if you were able to guarantee more than just the t-shirt each month though. Stickers etc are usually pretty cheap, so receiving just a t-shirt for $23 might not make for the best month. Either way, good luck with it.
illdave··on Ask HN: How much can I make with 20k users
While it varies from case to case, have you considered running affiliate offers instead of just regular banner ads? Might be worth testing - if you could get banners up advertising the next big game, you can earn a commission if they pre-release through your ad. I've found that can often earn more than regular display ads, but might be worth testing. (By the way, while Amazon converts well, it only has a cookie length of 1 day, while most others have a cookie length of around 30 days, so you could also try testing different affiliate merchants).
illdave··on Show HN: Crowd&sup2; - A viral marketing campaign creator I wrote in 72 hours
Nice concept - it looks pretty similar to Paywithatweet.com which (I've heard) does actually get people tweeting about the product.

The drawback with these sorts of concepts is that it means the product is shared before people actually use it, which makes the endorsement seem a bit forced. Having said that, people do use it to get access so maybe that doesn't put many people off.

The design looks great by the way, I didn't notice it was Bootstrap until jaryd mentioned it.

illdave··on Show HN: My midweek project - karmurl
Looks great - really good idea, thanks for making it.

Not sure if it's just me, but it doesn't display the full page when showing me someones site to review - it shows the top third and then just grey space (using the latest version of Chrome on a Mac).
