ijafri··on Launch HN: RankScience (YC W17) – Automated Split-Testing for SEO
I am bit wary of the idea, despite the fair intentions, but Google in particular tends to view anything remotely close to 'improving' search ranking using 3rd party 'software', as a threat to their own Ego-rithms.
ijafri··on Facebook’s AI unlocks the ability to search photos by what’s in them
now i know why facebook has been doin this. http://i.imgur.com/zPapJHM.png

This isn't posted here to brag about my skills or anything else... but it's not the AI or Robots that software/web developers should be worried about... due to abundance of free education on the web, I guess it's gonna be hell competitive.... your thoughts?

psst! since i couldn't find an in-expensive quality web designer here... who won't shove a wordpress theme up my arse so I said to myself, what's the big deal... CSS3 is for kids.

ijafri··on India's demonetisation of Rs. 500 and Rs. 1000 notes
Strange, in Pakistan it's the opposite Govt issued Rs. 5000 note which is equal to INR 3171 because otherwise people were using USD 100 bills .... and only making USD stronger locally.. I still don't get how they are going to keep big guys from keeping USD $100 ... I would keep an eye on USD vs INR in coming weeks
ijafri··on Signs that a startup is focused on stuff that doesn’t matter
>You can tell a startup is focusing on the wrong thing when: They're using the 'newest', most obscure, programming language or frameworks available because it's the 'best' for some unscientific reason.

I don't think he was talking about technical details, he was merely trying to emphasis on the importance of ignoring trivial things that might not mean (at an early stage esp.,) as much as one might think... And I'd agree..

At an early stage one should have google like garage office and just stay focused... focused.

twitter isn't facing problems due to less revenue.. but due to abundance of the expenses.... just gave a very broad example to make the point.

ijafri··on Microsoft Teams, the new chat-based workspace in Office 365
Microsoft is charging $6/month/user for online office/teams/1tb storage/50gb email storage/skypebiz/conference calling

Slack $7/month/user just for teams :///

anyhow i hate office so i am gonna stick to gsuite..

ijafri··on [dead]
translation: screw you microsoft
ijafri··on Wordpress on AWS: smooth and pain free
kindda surprised he wasn't using SES (sendy) for mailing list.. instead mailchimp...
ijafri··on Typora – A cross platform markdown editor
they have done/got a lot of things right.
ijafri··on Twitter Is Expected to Field Bids This Week
so twitter is basically demanding $100/user...
ijafri··on Microsoft bids $44.6B for Yahoo (2008)
Couldn't locate the 'Alibaba' word on the said article, I was assuming Microsoft had offered it for Yahoo alone ... as it was desperate for 'search' share?? are you sure, the bid included Alibaba share too??
ijafri··on The decline of Stack Overflow (2015)
Glad someone brought it up., I had guessed it was only the case with me., it's still a great resource to 'search' answers., but posting your own... only would lead you to humiliation with down-votes.

What I had guessed and stopped posting any question, that they only want to answer anything that's general... not 'specific' at least at this point, i still use SO a lot but only search for possible answers, I have never dared again after being trolled and downvotes.

ijafri··on Flickr is shutting down Marketplace, its commercial photo licensing program
>Flickr is shutting down
ijafri··on 'We're in a Bubble'
Point I was trying to make, there is clear distinction between the bubble and ups & lows.
ijafri··on 'We're in a Bubble'
I don't think the bubble thing is true for our time, nor it will be in the near future, it's just tech has become more competitive than ever. I am too young to know exactly the circumstance surrounding the last .dot com bubble when did it happen ... but I guess, it could have happened, the VC had not seen the full potential of the internet back then...

I can't buy the notion, that we will or ever see a bubble ... it's just ups and lows just about anything in life ... because at this point and in future internet is too larger to be vulnerable to it.

But that said, there is a little room left, for developers living in the mom's basement., and that's truly sad.

ijafri··on Uber is going to be hit and better experience in Pakistan than India
Let's sum up.

1. Taxi drivers here are charging 10x than they should, therefore no one use them. everyone uses rickshaw, but that's really bothersome

2. The number of female employees are booming, and it's almost head to head., not 50% though, but exceptionally high these days. and they dont' drive scooty as in India, due to social norms here.

3. Normally, drivers being a muslim country or due to local norms are very nice to women, unlike India where even rape cases were reported.

ijafri··on Amazon Has Just Registered to Sell Ocean Freight
>As the freight forwarder on a company’s shipments, Amazon would see both the name of the supplier and the wholesale price paid by the importer. (from the Article)

It's unlikely that an importer or exporter is going to use Amazon for the freight forwarding outside its network. I guess Amazon only will end up handling shipments of its own or network sellers who significantly rely on amazon to sell their products, likely through LCL Consol box, putting a lot of smaller shipments into a single 40HC container., that's going to save them a lot of cost as well as give them tighter control over the shipment routing and transit time etc.

Other regular importers & exporters either in China or USA are never going to use it. Because of the reason mentioned above.,

An importer or exporter shares too much sensitive and critical information with his freight and customs agent., If I suddenly get involved in trading or in other words become their competitor its obvious no one is going to share the information with me.
