ihaveajob··on Treating beef like coal would make a big dent in greenhouse-gas emissions
Agreed. As a Spaniard, I'm surely biased, but I prefer pork to beef any day of the week.
ihaveajob··on Traffic Fatalities Are a Choice
In bike-friendly places like Amsterdam and Copenhagen, it's super rare to see a helmet. A bike helmet offers reasonable protection in a solo fall, but it has nearly cosmetic effect if you're hit by a car.

But one thing you don't see in those places is huge, flat-front trucks with poor visibility and worse pedestrian impact safety. Until the US mandates pedestrian safety measures, we won't see a reversal in this trend.

Edit: I mostly bike places here in California, and I do wear a helmet 99% of the time, but I don't judge those who choose not to, because the biggest factor in bike safety is having other bikes on the road.

ihaveajob··on World-first experimental cancer treatment paves way for clinical trial
I found the headline confusing. It would have been helpful to include the type of cancer in it. Or if it's a pan-cancer treatment, to say so explicitly.
ihaveajob··on What is the origin of the lake tank image that has become a meme? (2021)
Ok, but beside the aqueducts, orthography and lasting peace, what good were the Romans for us?
ihaveajob··on Trump wins presidency for second time
This aged well :)
ihaveajob··on Trump wins presidency for second time
Lots of low-level foot soldiers. Not the capo.
ihaveajob··on Trump wins presidency for second time
All they have to do is leave things as they are. They won't have trouble NOT following through in their promises. Politicians do that all the time. The US economy is the strongest of its peers, and the best it's been in a long time. Once that settles in, people will see the party in power as responsible for that.
ihaveajob··on Dynamic Models of Gentrification
I wish the term 'displacement' would be more commonly used, because it encapsulates the negative aspects of gentrification. On the other hand, gentrification has objectively positive aspects (improvements in safety, amenities, livability of a neighborhood). But it's too late now.
ihaveajob··on Please do not write below the line
I left a pair of sandals in the shower room at work (a shared space) way before the pandemic. We stopped having a desk there, and I stopped coming in other than for a few social events. Then the office closed, and reopened. I came back for a coffee and went in just out of curiosity. The sandals were there, still in the same corner. Now they're home with me.
ihaveajob··on Writing a book in the age of open source
When I wrote my PhD thesis (the closest thing to a book I've ever worked on), I used LyX and I loved it. All the power of LaTeX, with a usable UI. When you're done, just apply the publisher settings and you're out!
ihaveajob··on ICQ will stop working from June 26
That was my favorite feature. And the random match part, way earlier than ChatRoulette. I remember talking to some kid in the Philippines about the history of her country and mine (Spain). Mind-blowing at the time.
ihaveajob··on Golden Visa Programs, Once a Boon, Lose Their Luster
At least in Spain, there's a lot of local control by city hall on zoning. A lot of people assume that any large development that comes up only did so because of backroom deals, so they oppose it blindly. And that translates to who they elect. So there's less micro-control than in the US, but it still ends up with similar effects. Nowadays, the boogeyman seems to be AirBnB and similar.
ihaveajob··on Funeral Food
I live in the US but my family is in/from Spain. When my mom was visiting, we had to attend a funeral (for my wife's grandpa), and after the ceremony everyone went to a local restaurant and had a small feast. My mom was appalled, because she thought it was disrespectful. But I think it's a sweet thing to do, remembering the deceased in a pleasant setting. Especially if the death was of old age.

I hope when I go, my friends and family have a good time together.

ihaveajob··on Carl Sagan, nuking the moon, and not nuking the moon
My god, I saw this comment and thought it'd be fun to pick up something by Neal Stephenson. After all, I loved Cryptonomicon back in college. But it's 880 pages! As a slow reader, this is sadly not something I'll ever get to.
ihaveajob··on U-M finds students with alphabetically lower-ranked names receive lower grades
When I was a TA in grad school, I noticed the same. Early on I thought some BS answers were at least kind of funny, and I gave them the benefit of the doubt, maybe giving more attention to the parts that were correct. After I saw similar answers later on, the novelty wore off and I was probably less amused, so the inclination to be lenient disappeared. Sometimes I went back to previous decisions if I remembered them, to be fair, but I don't think I always remembered since the volume could be high (grading 80 exams in a row is TEDIOUS).
ihaveajob··on An open source initiative to share and compare heat pump performance data
That's right. I remember a local "electrification festival" where some vendors and city officials teamed up to explain the various options. One of the most common questions was "will this lower by bill"? And the most memorable answer by a vendor was "probably now, but you won't have to be wearing that coat in your living room". Which hit home because at the time we had a drafty house with poor heat distribution.
ihaveajob··on Almost no one cares if your site is not on social media
It's also a very powerful "office OS" type of platform. Nobody else comes near in that dimension AFAIK. Agreed that it's not a designer's wet dream, but it does the job, albeit in a clunky way.
ihaveajob··on Almost no one cares if your site is not on social media
I have a similar mental model, but Teams the way we use it is more of a replacement of Slack than Zoom. It's a huge app in terms of features, and it covers both segments, so it's not really a clean divide there.
ihaveajob··on Mario meets Pareto
Of course, but I'm not inside his head :)
ihaveajob··on Mario meets Pareto
Beautiful presentation. I love when visualizations serve the goal and not the other way around. Tufte would be proud.
ihaveajob··on Ugly Avatar
Ha! This is basically why I bought uglyavatar.com a couple of years ago. I was taken aback when I saw this on HN. Maybe I should do something with it one day...
ihaveajob··on Why is it so hard to build an airport?
The Madrid airport offered this service, but it wasn't very popular, nor widely known. You checked in your luggage downtown and hopped on the subway to get to the airport with just your carry-on. I can't find any reference now, so it must have been discontinued.
ihaveajob··on The Good Soldier Švejk (2018)
If it was anything like the Spanish Civil War, lots of people just happened to live in an area that was controlled by one or another side. Those who were committed to their cause probably did their best to escape or take arms. Most were simply recruited and complied to avoid further trouble. Both my grandfathers happened to live on the side they disagreed with when hostilities started, so they had no choice.
ihaveajob··on Mass timber is great, but it will not solve the housing shortage
I suppose you didn't buy the entire town, so you can't preclude your neighbors from wanting their property to appreciate, their lives to become more social, and their environment to change.
ihaveajob··on Mass timber is great, but it will not solve the housing shortage
San Francisco, the densest city in the state, is 3/4 suburbia. There's no reason why it couldn't host 4 times the population without resorting to Hong Kong style urbanism (which would be great IMO, but that's a separate story). The infrastructure argument would make sense if homes in remote areas didn't also need that infrastructure, while suffering from lower efficiency in all measures.
ihaveajob··on What if I’m wrong? (2023)
I suppose they meant that their opinions are not that controversial or against the norm. I've encountered this when I talk online about car safety, speeding, and generally about safe streets. There's a particular type of car lovers who are always waiting to swamp any dissenting opinion with downvotes, effectively drowning the discussion. I think my opinions are not that bad but for that crowd, it would make you reconsider your priors; if they're so offended by what I said, am I wrong?
ihaveajob··on When should you give up on a project that doesn't work?
The corollary is that everyone is an idiot until they win, or quit. Then they're either winners or quitters.
ihaveajob··on An RNG that runs in your brain
This sounds like a great teacher. The fact that you got this gem to think about years (decades?) later tells so much about his craft.
ihaveajob··on Show HN: Htmldocs – Typeset and generate pdfs with HTML/CSS
My feedback is that I was ready to move on after I searched for pricing, and it appears that it's not shown anywhere unless I sign up. I'll give it a try because it looks interesting and I'm looking for something similar.
ihaveajob··on Masters of the Ice: Charles Rabot's Arctic Photographs (Ca. 1881)
The whaling station is fascinating. It makes me wonder what would be the blend of smells in the air.
