igrekel··on Floppy Disk Museum on a Bootable Floppy serving from a 286 PC
Mmh no SyQuest EZDrive in there, maybe I could send mine.
igrekel··on Dyalog: Escrow
Yes of course. An escrow is required for many contracts, especially for government subsidiaries. We have a SaaS service (a complex environment including a react front end) and still use an escrow service. A lot of it relies on docker images.
igrekel··on A first for Canada: New type of nuclear plant opening by 2028
The other reason is that Canada has access to a lot of nuclear fuel and used to have a fairly well developed nuclear industry. That being said, Australia is also a significant producer.
igrekel··on A Brief History of ClarisWorks (2003)
I was using Nisus writer in the pre OSX days. I had forgotten about it and I am amazed it still exists and is actively developed.
igrekel··on Olympus quits camera business after 84 years
I'm in a similar situation! I still use my trusty GF1 which is by far the best camera I have owned and I wanted to eventually upgrade and bring my lenses that I accumulated over the years with me. Olympus had a solid m43 lineup back when I last checked. I was always a little frustrated how some vendors just started their own mirrorless, fragmenting the business. Its a shame and I am afraid to what will happen with m43.. its a shame if it goes, it is still a world better than cell phone cameras and it is so much more convenient than full frames.
igrekel··on Creating a full-text search engine in Apache Pinot
Thanks for the link, I'll go through the presentation.

We need to upgrade the way we compute indicators and the backend for our analytics and I was considering solutions like Druid and ElasticSearch and Pinot seems like another good option. Getting better latency is really interesting and I'm curious on how much we need to compromise on space usage etc.

Another big subject is how it handles time-based data, similar to time series.

igrekel··on Creating a full-text search engine in Apache Pinot
I haven"t checked Pinot in detail yet. I'd be interested to know how it compares to the likes of ElasticSearch.
igrekel··on Ask HN: How can we prevent excessive force by police?
Training and drilling to stay calm and de-escalate situations. Training on how to handle confused individuals or individual with mental illnesses.

Be better at working as an organisation and not rely on the action of a single cop. Change laws procedures so that persons of interest can still have hope and that being arrested does not equal to the end of life as they know it. Strangely enough, fair process and trials and forgiving laws help make it less likely that people being arrested attempt desperate violent actions against the cops. In return, it makes the cops job easier and reduces their likeliness to use excessive force.

Again, the probability of getting caught is the most effective deterrent to criminal activity , not the severity of the punishment.

igrekel··on 110M year-old nodosaur is the best-preserved fossil of its kind (2017)
That sounds like an excellent idea for a trip. I'd love to do that with my kid, it would awesome.
igrekel··on 110M year-old nodosaur is the best-preserved fossil of its kind (2017)
I second this! I visited the Tyrrel museum in Drumheller and the Dinosaur provincial park that's near Patricia as a young adult about 20 years ago and it is still imprinted in my memory.

I had seen dinosaur skeletons in museums before but it didn't compare. Also guided tours through the limited access of the park were amazing, almost surreal, with fossils of dinosaur bones just popping out of the ground now and then plus the chance of seeing active digs.

igrekel··on Technology that changed air travel
Thats was a good read, I wonder where did you get all the information. content and stories from?
igrekel··on Show HN: Twitch Roulette – Find and chat with streamers who are streaming alone
I did try that but still get tons of people apparently streaming games. Also I don't seem to get that many results. Also it would be nice to be able to classify things by language, platform etc.
igrekel··on Show HN: Twitch Roulette – Find and chat with streamers who are streaming alone
Every now and then I look at thi. I enjoyed watching people coding now and then, I find its a good way to improve my set up when I am on a new technology.

That being said, I find it extremely difficult to find streams of people coding. Maybe that exist but I'd like something where I can pick a platform of programming language or type of dev. I know there are a few tags like this on switch but there are almost no results and some of them still look like people gaming.

igrekel··on Ask HN: Is your company sticking to on-premise servers? Why?
I'm assuming it takes care of monitoring and managing space, disks, backups etc. I mean the true administration tasks, not helping with designing the database and queries.

As I said, we are considering but the analysis hasn't been done yet. If you have insight, please.

igrekel··on Ask HN: Where to Host Dedicated Servers?
We used OVH for bare metal purchases in several of their data centres for over three years now. It is cost effective and was pretty good. We did have issues with how quick it was to fix hardware issues when they arose. What doesn't help is that we were using custom instances and not their stock offering. We may switch to their "enterprise support".

We also host some machines we own in a small local datacenter from a local provider because it is connected to a dedicated connection to a private network.

igrekel··on Ask HN: Is your company sticking to on-premise servers? Why?
I know currently our problem is finding proper staff and that is why we are considering moving to a cloud provider. Especially for database hosting, using a database as a service becomes very attractive from a staffing perspective just because we can't seem to find good candidates and we've been training younger people into being DBAs but they ultimately want to do something else after a while.
igrekel··on A fight against Amazon becomes a state matter in Quebec
It was a cooking gear store. They do not have much on the web but the person answering the phone knows the stock amazingly well. I suspect she may have a good inventory system under her eyes.

I've been shopping for plants recently and there is a world of difference between two different nurseries.

igrekel··on A fight against Amazon becomes a state matter in Quebec
Most of the issues and why a lot of things are not offered in Quebec is rarely because of bill 101 or language in general. It is not difficult to get something translated and offer it in a binlingual version. Heck, countries with much smaller populations get a localized version of international products.

Usually, at least when i was in insurance, it is because of legal and regulatory reason. While the law systems in Canada is based on the common law, the law system in Quebec is based on the french civil code. This had repercussions on the way a lot of regulation is thought about. So when it was time to get our products ready for Canada, we had to do a few special cases for Quebec. My guess is that a lot of suppliers just overlook it or do not want to perform the appropriate checks and adaptations because they are not organized in a way to handle this distinction inside a country.

igrekel··on A fight against Amazon becomes a state matter in Quebec
Honestly, so far the quickest delivery I've experienced was from local businesses. Some local stores switched too what is almost pizza delivery. I ordered gear at lunchtime and got it delivered in the afternoon. But it really depends on the supplier. 48h delivery has been hit and miss too recently.

Now what the article doesn't say is that a lot of the businesses on "Le Panier Bleu" do not even have an online catalog and you need to call them. In these cases, it's pretty much the yellow pages with a different color.

igrekel··on What Are Spomeniks?
See, without caring about its looks, I like this website. It gives some context, some explanations and helps me to know why I should care about this. It also provides some nice content to explore, some pointers to find out more. I just love it and I wish there were more websites with content like this.
igrekel··on Charter engineer quits over “reckless” rules against work-from-home
I'm trying to figure out what Charter is. Can anyone hep with this? It seems charter.com redirects to spectrum.com, is this the same company?
igrekel··on Tesla teardown finds electronics 6 years ahead of Toyota and VW
I agree with you this is mainly a fluff piece and must be taken with a grain of salt. I also agree that Tesla overcomplexifies some aspects of their cars and I would appreciate a simpler efficient design. After all, its the simplicity of an electric drivetrain that appealed to me.

That being said, I'm puzzled when you say its mediocre in comparison. My 3 got smashed and I have a Mercedes replacement for a few days during repairs and it really feels like a big, loud and clumsy car with an obnoxious amount of chrome. Maybe its the difference in price range, the 3 completes at a much lower price point.

igrekel··on Tesla Q4 2019 Vehicle Production and Deliveries
I didn't know they did that. Would be really nice if it became widespread.
igrekel··on Tesla Surges Above $500, Leaving Analyst Targets in the Dust
I'd say the car's build feels much better than the other similarly priced EVs or better than a Camry. It's probably under what you would find for similarly prices gas car. I don't see entry level Tesla's as luxury cars per se, but the driving experience is definitely luxury.
igrekel··on Tesla Surges Above $500, Leaving Analyst Targets in the Dust
I had this issue the first freezing episode of the year. I applied silicon lube on the rubbers and on the lowest part of the window where it get into the door as well as on door handles. Hasn't been an issue since. Warming up the car before use with the phone app also helps but I always forget to do it myself.
igrekel··on Tesla Surges Above $500, Leaving Analyst Targets in the Dust
Having tried all reasonably priced EVs, its not a question of style. My original plan was to get a Leaf but I ended up buying a Tesla. It just drives better than the other cars and you get a much better car with a larger second row, more practical cargo space with a Tesla than the other EV options. That is without mentioning that you have to wait months to get a Leaf plus or a Kona electric. The latest VW may be interesting but it didn't exist at the time. I don't see where the higher quality electric vehicles are coming from.

It is a very polarizing car, some strangers will go up to you and tell you how Tesla will go bankrupt, you'll have no one to service the car, it will lose all its value and other things like that. "The name" is nearly a liability to me. It is just a car, it is useful.

igrekel··on Tesla Q4 2019 Vehicle Production and Deliveries
Other cars get software updates too, just you need to go to the dealership to get them. And they are not exempt of bugs either, but its just more trouble to have them fixed.
igrekel··on Hardy Littlewood Rules (2010)
The title is misleading, I thought this was about littlewood's rules (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Littlewood%27s_rule).
igrekel··on Tesla Software Version 10.0
Well I got mine this summer, I didn't get the full self driving package and my car certainly doesn't see speed limit signs its very obvious they come from map data. It actually makes using AP in town a bit useless because they changed a lot of at the limits but somehow the map data is not up to date.
igrekel··on Tesla Software Version 10.0
as far as I know, when I got my M3, auto lane change was not part of autopilot but has been moved to the full self driving package.
