ignaloidas··on Open-Sourcing our Firmware
Why have flags at all? Just use the native language name and a translation.
ignaloidas··on Open-Sourcing our Firmware
Side note: the language selection is stupid on the website. No, I'm not from Germany, and I don't speak German even if it's the closest country to me that you sell laptops in. Also, it's a bad practice to associate flags with languages. Or to give options that don't work after you select them.

Otherwise, very nice news!

ignaloidas··on Renesas enters FPGA market with the first ultra-low-power, low-cost family
The smallest RISC-V processor for FPGAs that I know of[0] needs 1.2K LUTs on ice40 FPGAs, so maybe barely

ignaloidas··on Introducing the PineNote
Since PineNote will have an actual GPU unlike reMarkable, I do expect that it will handle many PDF's without much trouble.
ignaloidas··on Grafana, Loki, and Tempo will be relicensed to AGPLv3
> Elasticsearch changed their licence for more or less this reason

And look how it's going for them. AWS very nicely forked elsasticsearch and now has the fork that seems to be gathering quite a bit of momentum. I doubt that AWS was even considering talking with them after they announced the license change.

ignaloidas··on GoboLinux
It is similar on GoboLinux as well. There is a Recipe repository that contains build scripts that you invoke with Compile, which automatically compiles and installs the package.
ignaloidas··on GoboLinux
It's all compile on machine, there's no package repository, only a Recipe one.
ignaloidas··on Elasticsearch does not belong to Elastic
Just as much as their much-hated Amazon https://aws.amazon.com/blogs/opensource/amazon-giving-back-a...
ignaloidas··on Embrace, extend, and finally extinguish – Microsoft plays their hand
It's not problem of SMTP or email in general that Outlook is trash. I get it, ages ago you bought into Microsoft's ecosystem, but can't you acknowledge it's flaws? If the server you're using doesn't let you send emails the way you want to, it's the problem of the server, not the email ecosystem in general.
ignaloidas··on Godot 4.0 gets SDF based real-time global illumination
There have been several games made with Godot released on Switch recently. The main blocker is Nintendo's NDA's. There's a recent twitter thread[0] from developers of one of those games.

ignaloidas··on The Sourcehut Project Hub
Because Docker is a really shitty way to package applications. You don't package the application, you package an entire linux distro, with it's packages, and your application into a single opaque blob. Normal package managers just package your application in a more simple manner which works in conjunction with your OS, not on top of it.
ignaloidas··on The Sourcehut Project Hub
Nothing is stopping you from using more than one email client.

ignaloidas··on Godot 3.2

ignaloidas··on Don't Use VPN Services
Quote: > Note: The content in this post does not apply to using VPN for their intended purpose; that is, as a virtual private (internal) network. It only applies to using it as a glorified proxy, which is what every third-party "VPN provider" does.
ignaloidas··on Don't Use VPN Services
Proxy is securely leaving the network. There is no real difference in the principle of operation besides the protocol(SOCKS vs OpenVPN, etc.)
ignaloidas··on Don't Use VPN Services
Well, you now control the endpoint and have a lower probability of your traffic being snooped, as major VPN's have a concentrated stream of "interesting" traffic while random VPS's don't.
ignaloidas··on Sourcehut welcomes Bitbucket refugees
Almost none of the IO of that page is cached actually[0]. The only thing I'm sure that is cached is the templates themselves. I'm pretty sure that neither git lookups, nor DB accesses are cached, where you can save time. And mind you, this is served from a single data center in USA, and the latency can already eat up a lot of that. I in Europe have 300ms ping to it, so it might be that you are simply far away from the physical location.

ignaloidas··on Backblaze Hard Drive Stats Q2 2019
Not necessarily. You loose a bit of data reliability(which is an important quality for a backup provider) by using a drive that fails more often, and you have to pay wages to workers that have to replace those failing drives. At a scale 5% sooner means additional employees just to replace those drives.
ignaloidas··on Use plaintext email
I think footer text might interest you:

> "But if plaintext is so good, why is this page written in HTML?" >This is a reference document, not an email, you twit.

ignaloidas··on Use plaintext email
Now that page recommends using git send-email, on which the author also made a tutorial: https://git-send-email.io
ignaloidas··on Use plaintext email
For Protonmail: maybe using PGP and sending over TLS?? Protonmail bridge basically does this, just over a proprietary protocol.
ignaloidas··on Use plaintext email
overwriting HTML styles is harder than setting how to format plaintext. HTML styling has order of magnitude more customization options than plaintext, which has three that I can think of: font, font size, tab width. Almost all clients have customization for plaintext, I haven't seen one that can override HTML customizations.
ignaloidas··on Use plaintext email
Have you thought that others may not want to see your emails as you intended?
ignaloidas··on Use plaintext email
There is info about it. "4. Why is plaintext better than HTML?"
ignaloidas··on A Rust-based TLS library outperformed OpenSSL in almost every category
A valid point could be compiler availability. Almost every platform imaginable has a C compiler. Not a language feature though, just a sign of popularity.
ignaloidas··on What's Coming in Python 3.8
Personally, I think they should have went with `if y as x:` syntax, as I think that makes it clearer what it does
ignaloidas··on Cities: Skylines Is Turing Complete
The difference is that with LBA you can determine if the program will end or not, as you can check all of the finite states it can have.
ignaloidas··on YouTube videos that have almost zero previous views
Clean it of trash and you will receive less trash recommendations. Fully cleaning isn't effective as the average video quality is lower than most HN public would like to watch. Having mostly good videos you like makes it recommend more similar content to you.
