igl··on Axel Springer bans adblock users from Bild online
I am happy too. Anything taking views from this hate and lie spreading paper is good. Ad block should not even try to circumvent this.
igl··on Berlin anti-TTIP trade deal protest attracts hundreds of thousands
Nice Article. Unlike what Der Spiegel wrote... They quickly associated the protestors with: Pegida, NPD, Front National, Bulgarian Ultranationalists, American Tea-Party and Donald Trump.

"Wer nichts Schlimmes daran findet, sich gedanklich bei Pegida-Bachmann, Marine Le Pen und Donald Trump unterzuhaken, darf bei der Demo heute gerne hinter dem Plakat mit dem Chlorhühnchen herrennen."

Unbelievable.

igl··on The pace of major breakthroughs has declined
I only agree about the 'energy predicament' not being taken seriously. I don't think progress can be measured like he described. The steam-engine and frequency signaling where huge, transformed our society greatly and still are the base of many things we do now. But he sounds like "there are no hoverboards so progress must be declining".
igl··on 007, a small experimental language with a license to macro
First time i read a README from first to last word. Good job!
igl··on The GhostWriter, a JavaScript 2D Game with Canvas
Doesn't work :/ OSX Chrome Version 45.0.2454.101 (64-bit)
igl··on Node v4.0.0
I am a bit curious about what "massive instability" you have in mind?
igl··on Stingray: 3D Game Engine and Design Visualization
With photorealism not being a speed problem but more of a artistic problem, i think its natural that tools focus on artists rather than programmers.

Movie-like assets for games are hard, expensive and artists who master all the skills that it takes are rare.

igl··on HTTP/2 technology demo
Very simple: Instead of making 200 requests, http2 will use a single requests and stream in the chunks continuously. Also noticeable by the pictures not appearing randomly but in the same order they are sent out.
igl··on Developing Backbone.js Applications – a Creative Commons book
Success mostly depends on the size of the team and their culture. Do they do code reviews? Refactor early and often? Is there a architecture plan that is enforced and trained to new hires?

Frameworks do give you a corset to work within. I do not claim backbone wasn't a success. Just providing that was big.

igl··on Developing Backbone.js Applications – a Creative Commons book
Not trying to be cynical, but i am kinda glad that backbone is "over" for me. Been with it for about 5 years or more and i have seen big projects fall apart. You don't see the tree behind all the leafs after a year of coding.

With flux/react/angular around development is a lot more fun again. I can't imagine going back.

igl··on Vanar.io – Realtime multiplayer browser game: Agar.io meets Asteroids
Wow. This is the first time i played a really cool and addicting websocket/webgl game. Most games try to be too big for the current state of the platform. This nails it!
igl··on Node.js: Cluster vs. Async
Do your apps run single-threaded? Why wouldn't you cluster? In-memory state is easily avoidable. Using in-memory sessions even prints a warning in express by default.
igl··on Be Kind
From my experience there are a few people in IT who can learn from this and start self-reflecting. They are NOT the majority but there are angry white sociopathic nerds.

The monoculture is often criticized in the programming departments and being nice would be the first thing for diversity happen sooner.

igl··on Syncify.js – Eliminates the need for callbacks in the browser
It basicly a wrapper around Promises.

Nothing of your sync functions work until after you do syncify.revert which gives you a function taking a CALLBACK.

igl··on Twitter Needs New Leadership
Yes. And a redesign. And a paid premium (200 chars) account. And a enterprise (500chars + in-tweet-auto-playing-video) option.

There is clearly not enough advertisement on twitter, no wonder the users are running away.

igl··on Germans, still outraged by NSA spying, learn their country may have helped
Would be enough to look up the first 3 editors of this article. Rudolf Augstein would turn in his grave if he knew what happend to der Spiegel.
igl··on Ask HN: Should I testify?
...because of your career? Are you working in IT or the Mafia?
igl··on Aquaris E4.5 Ubuntu Edition
I'm Looking forward to get a new Phone. I am however undecided on Firefox OS and Ubuntu OS. Leaning towards Ubuntu but this device looks like a first-gen smart phone... once you see the bezel you can not unsee it!
igl··on Alcohol or Marijuana?
I feel discussing weed vs alcohol really tiresome too. I never had "paranoia" smoking weed and I never started bar fights or stole cars while drunk. It's a personal thing. If you smoke weed and jump out of windows or smash people faces because you got drunk, you are probably already bent in some way.

These are soft drugs and should be legal simply for drying out the black market. And have them available in a controlled manner.

igl··on OnLive shuts down streaming games service, sells patents to Sony
Latency is low enough that nobody cares about making it faster. I was at a awesome ISP 10 years ago playing quake with < 10ms ping (through clever routing to certain servers). This is still unmatched, I would say that latency and connection quality actually decreased. Fluent "live" interaction over the internet is still decades away.
igl··on Rich client side web apps gone too far (2014)
I use webapps every day. I don't really have a problem with the majority of them and i do not run into most issues he described often. When he talked about mobile i got to think: Hey most of the native apps on my mobile suck! Awful UIs, crashes, "bookmarkable state?" forget about it! Calendar widget not loading any entries? Restart the device!

Javascript is not the killer platform. I got it. Can we stop complaining?

Also: 10+ years of experience - does not understand `this` ha.

igl··on Sir Terry Pratchett has died
... =(

I saw his movie on assisted suicide. I hope he left us with no regrets. RIP

igl··on The new MacBook
Since nobody else mentioned it: Directory Opus. Looks big and clunky at first look but it's actually very fast and 100% customizable. You could strip it down to a dual list view and operate it purely by keyboard shortcuts. Buttons are defined in a copy pasteable xml format, are scriptable, come in various forms and let you bind events for left/right/middle click. The only caveat is: windows only. I would kill for a Linux version.
igl··on Net neutrality is a “Taliban-like issue”, says Europe’s top digital policymaker
So far i only heard of o2 (telefonica) having bandwidth throttles and when you can choose o2 you can usually choose other providers. Most cities have local providers with really good connections, stable rates and no overly expensive prices. Kabel Deutschland is a problem. Their 100mbit is a joke and not better than 16mbit from a proper provider. I wonder if its just the cable technology or them throttling traffic randomly. They alsp give me horrendous international routing. Websites not located within europe go through 300 hops are slow and unenjoyable. I had better experiences in the same city with other ISPs.

This is really bad for rural communities. Not only for having not internet but alos for their Economy. I know a company who are stuck with 1mbit and after experimenting with satellite internet and mobile-internet they are pretty much on the brick to move towards the city. Is everyone left behind is suppose to grow potatos for a job?

igl··on Net neutrality is a “Taliban-like issue”, says Europe’s top digital policymaker
Data caps do not exist for non-mobile Internet connections in Germany. The speed of the Internet is still increasing. We are at a point where i don't even care about getting more. Bandwidths of 250mbit are announced to come to the market in the coming years. I can live with stable 50mbit. The real problem are rural areas where people are stuck with 2mbit/256kbit lines and throwing away net neutrality will not change a damn thing about this. Laying kilometers of fibreglass into the ground for less than 500 customers will never be profitable. Even if they can charge half of them with a premium fee.
igl··on The time has come to stand up for the GPL
Derp. Have you read any proprietary software license before? Do you have an iPhone? What planet are you from? Your comment made me go and donate again now.
igl··on Response: Open Web Alliance Lobbies to Intercept Your Traffic
Yeah i can see that it is a lot of work. I could be reduced to influential companies that are listed in the stockmarket or are somehow else classified as influential. Food-watch for apps and devices... I am just winging it now. Time to do some googling.
igl··on Response: Open Web Alliance Lobbies to Intercept Your Traffic
I wish there was a website illustrating the political compass of companies. Showing their affiliate network, money flows, endorsements/statements, tax-haven parent companies and ivory collections of elephant hunting CEOs. Call me reactionary.
igl··on The time has come to stand up for the GPL
I just donated $15. If there is nothing to stop large companies completely ignoring the GPL then what good is it?
