igl··on Fastmail offers EU data region
Australian company so: lol. Snowden triggered a few narrow real wins but the broader surveillance apparatus adapted, survived, and in some ways grew. Things were just legalised.
igl··on US strikes $1.2B deal to pay German firm to halt offshore wind projects
So we should only address the symptoms and not the cause. What are you saying?

Modern AC units are heat pumps the same box cools in summer and heats in winter, more efficiently than a gas boiler.

What is your stance on heat pumps? Conservatives here, who use the same talking points as you, are against them and they prefer to use oil and gas.

And is 5c a extreme night temperature? Where are you from? I'm not from Europe I think.

igl··on Bonsai: Janestreet's UI Library
Exactly. There is plenty of code change however introduced by bundlers who do “bundling“, polyfill injection, minification, this kind of stuff.
igl··on Wind and solar overtake fossil fuels in Germany for the first time
Germany is in no position to go against the USA's geopolitical interests. Sure, they do trade shenanigans sometimes, like with Russian gas, but the relationship with Russia was pretty good before Putin decided to hold power endlessly - he even gave a speech (in German) in the parliament. But in the end of the day, those times are over; only extremist parties are pro-Russian, and Germany still has the 2nd largest US Army presence, including 15-20 US nuclear bombs parked here. It's unthinkable that any government here would go against "Western" interests and support Russia.

absolutely nobody used those outside of a language demo. We also got --erasableSyntaxOnly last year to remove them from the language. The TS team considers them “mistakes“ for a really long time now
igl··on Wind and solar overtake fossil fuels in Germany for the first time
A strong possibility? Where do you get your news from?
igl··on Keychron announces first open-source firmware for gaming mice
I had keyboards upwards of $200 with a very nice design but they have their Bluetooth switch underneath the keycaps ... and usually don't ship ISO versions. What keychron is delivering for the price is just amazing.
igl··on Germany set to restrict its Freedom of Information Act
This is a minor point. It gives the government broad power to reject any request, associations and media outlets are excluded, it costs more and the mandatory REDACTION OF NAMES is undercutting accountability completely.

Yea, I don't give a shit wether only citizen should be able to request data.

igl··on Germany set to restrict its Freedom of Information Act
"SPD will block this" is contradicted by SPD already voting for the identical Berlin version weeks ago.
igl··on SpaceX says it has agreement to acquire Cursor for $60B
I used to be a hardcore Cursor user until I spent more time with the alternatives and cursor has gotten rough on my machine lately: spins up the MBP fans in minutes and drains the battery in an hour or two on the go. The harness is great, but eventually someone will build something equally good that is not vibe coded to death.
igl··on Father claims Google's AI product fuelled son's delusional spiral
I think the fact that a guns primary function is harm and murder and AI is a word prediction engine makes a huge difference.
igl··on Thank HN: You helped save 33k lives
First time seeing this. Really moving story.

I just set up a monthly donation and had one thought: the way to donate monthly feels a bit too hidden right now (did a ctrl+f search to find the footer link).

Much love to all of you!

igl··on Y Combinator will let founders receive funds in stablecoins
Founders can choose how to get paid, so this mostly feels like optics and support for YCs stablecoin bets. Most startups will just need to dump this into a bank to pay salaries and vendors.
igl··on Roam 50GB is now Roam 100GB
The willingness to keep backing his companies, despite his political trajectory, is honestly hard to understand.
igl··on Give Me Back My Monolith
People create their opinion from what they read in blog posts like this rather than their own experience. Take the right tool for the job - over.
igl··on A Front End Does Not Have to Be Rich
Going back to the early 2000s with freemarker/twig/mustache is what he means I guess? Nextjs and Gatsby are what they are for very good reasons and backend apis can be written in whatever you please these days... Why would you consider using those dinosaurs again? When that is all you and your team is comfortable with?
igl··on How NoSQL forced the evolution of a scalable relational database
This is a very blunt statement and overvalues hstore. Keys AND values in hstore are and can only be text strings.
igl··on Relicensing React, Jest, Flow, and Immutable.js
My beef with software patents is bigger than my dislike of the Facebook institution. I think something like a weak patent clause would be nice for FOSS projects but it's not explored by many so far.

Interestingly more people seem blatently annoyed that their employer forbids them to use e.g. React and not about what the license actually means.

igl··on Announcing CoffeeScript 2
Everything is an expression. Including if statements. There is no need of such syntax abominations.
igl··on German Unemployment Declines as Economy Poised for More Growth
Lies. Merkels government just changed how the number is calculated. They created programs for unemployed (1 euro jobber, "Aufstocker") and removed them from the statistic.

They still receive social support but are not "fully unemployed"

http://www1.wdr.de/nachrichten/arbeitslose-statistik-100.htm... (german)

The growing income inequality tells the real story.

igl··on Apollo Client 1.0: A flexible, community-focused JavaScript GraphQL client
My favorites are the collection of functions offered by the graphql-tools package. Like composing your schema from strings instead of the verbose JSON definition. The mocking is also neat.

Apollo is really just a tool-box of a lot neat little things that you can put together or omit. Check out their other packages beside apollo-client.

igl··on JSON Web Tokens should be avoided
Oh man.

Proponents say critics dont offer alternatives at the same time they always literally 'reverse' engineered sessions if you dig deep enough.

I give up. JWT is just a hip thing to do right now. :(

igl··on JSON Web Tokens should be avoided
So there is a db roundtrip involved? Like a inverted session. Whats the point of using jwt then?
igl··on Ask HN: Will front end development ever move away from JavaScript?
Do you think java is elegant or do you think ocaml is elegant?

Google built Dart once as a alternative and it did not make it into the Browser.

Are JS frameworks not simple? I really want to know how you feel about Spring or Magento.

igl··on 15 years trying to make everyone separate HTML, JavaScript, CSS – and then
() = empty arguments. you can only omit the braces when you have 1 argument. 0 and 2+ require the braces. #tc39

the colon refers to flow and typescripts type annotation "colon something". none-objects are lowercased

igl··on Interview with the author of React-like Inferno about JavaScript optimisations
React's event system is one of its strong points. Like with many alternatives, I stopped looking into them when i read "no event system" in the README. Perf is not the single most high priority in a framework.
igl··on Vitamin pills don't work and may be bad for you
Hard to believe. We have fortified foods and it should be rather hard to catch a nutrition deficiency, even if your diet solely consists of cheeseburgers (This probably differs from country to country).

Vitamin D can be found in Fish, Egg and it's even added to Milk.

igl··on Comparing Haskell and Node concurrency performance
Downvoted ofc. To be more elaborate: Node never claimed to do multithreading or being good at parallel processing. The shocking discovery of this article is:

1) The Author knows little about JS.

2) Picking on a scripting language which has 2 weeks + 2 years of development vs a 25 year old monster that is the playground of the brightest minds in CS, is easy.

Unfortunately the article did also not go into details of how the event loop works or shows how you can break out of the single thread with the tools that ARE available to you. I guess the idea was to write a hype article for Haskell. Here are some more ideas for the author:

Comparing Haskell and C++ type systems.

Comparing Haskell and Clojure functional purity and lazy evaluation.

Comparing Haskell and Java deterministic parallelism.

igl··on Comparing Haskell and Node concurrency performance
Comparing apples to oranges
igl··on We’re Scientists, Moms, And We Avoid Non-GMO Products
Clickbait-mood-piece that has plenty of links to even worse articles.
