ifwinterco··on LeCun has "zero concerns" about AI wiping out humanity, recent "rogue" incidents
That is part of it but the other (often implied) part is it can do general things consistently at a high level.

GPT6 will attempt to do almost any problem you can give it in text or image format and it will actually do a decent job a lot of the time. But its performance is still extremely spiky and it still makes basic mistakes and hallucinations.

So it's definitely a general artificial intelligence in some sense but it's kind of a weird one compared to the classic scifi idea

ifwinterco··on Anthropic tried to persuade Pope that AI could be conscious being
My Christian theology is not that strong but yes I believe so. So yes Thiel isn't really helping his case much here, maybe he actually is the antichrist
ifwinterco··on Anthropic tried to persuade Pope that AI could be conscious being
The Thiel antichrist thing was a reverse Streisand effect to block out the idea from the internet that he himself is the antichrist.

That idea is now ungoogleable

ifwinterco··on Micron CEO Says Memory Supply Will Be Much Tighter in 2027 and 2028 Than in 2026
Historically the RAM industry has done the opposite (ramped up production aggressively due to high prices) only for that production to all come online during a glut.

This process can be fatal for a company as your expensive fixed investment hits a demand cycle that can turn overnight.

So it’s not about being a moustache twirling villain and conniving to keep prices high, it’s just not responsible or sensible to ramp up production massively based on a temporary AI bubble that could pop at any moment

ifwinterco··on The death of web development education
A lot of people take pride in not being able to understand CSS despite it not being that complicated.

I’ve never understood that but for some reason it is a thing

ifwinterco··on DraftKings is using AI to behaviorally target chronic gamblers
Most people don't actually like the taste of alcoholic drinks when they first try them as a teenager.

The reason you like the taste of beer is in large part because your brain has learned to associate that taste with good things happening (the alcohol feeling).

Same with coffee, it's bitter, objectively should taste bad, but you learn to like it.

It's the same process

ifwinterco··on California farmers are struggling to sell grapes as demand for wine drops
Not in the UK from what I can see, there's stories about it in the news but try actually going to hackney on a saturday - it's full of 22 year olds drinking (and also often smashing loads of bag...).

Maybe that's not a representative sample but young people still want to socialise and at that age you can get away with it so why not.

Having said that, the UK is absolutely a nation of pissheads, the US has always has that puritanical streak

ifwinterco··on U.S. Strategic Petroleum Reserve Falls to Lowest Level Since 1982
Yes but that's sort of a different argument.

My point is the 1991 borders are somewhat arbitrary: they were originally internal administrative divisions inside a larger centralised state.

They don't necessarily represent a natural long term international border, and attaching huge moral significance to the specific strokes of a Soviet bureaucrat's pen is strange

ifwinterco··on Updated Google Maps shows destruction of the city of Rafah
Yes that would be the basic thesis.

It's a bit too 4D chess for my liking but would also explain some things that otherwise don't add up

ifwinterco··on Updated Google Maps shows destruction of the city of Rafah
Well the official story IIRC is the border was more lightly manned than normal (and with more reservists than normal) because it was a national holiday.

But again does that make sense given how the Israeli elites feel about Palestinians? Just assume because it's a Jewish holiday Hamas will also take the day off?

Because if that is stupidity then yes, it is very stupid

ifwinterco··on Updated Google Maps shows destruction of the city of Rafah
I would indeed also cast some suspicions on those events, yes, but also with no firm conclusion.

I'm open minded, could see it either way

ifwinterco··on U.S. Strategic Petroleum Reserve Falls to Lowest Level Since 1982
Crimea isn't just Russophilic, the majority of the population even before 2014 were ethnic Russians, the majority language was Russian, and it was part of Russia until 1954.

People who make a big point about "Crimea is Ukraine!" are either ignorant or ideological, objectively it's at best debatable.

(And really, there should be no slavs there at all and it should be given back to the Tatars, if anyone really wants to get into the morals...)

ifwinterco··on Updated Google Maps shows destruction of the city of Rafah
I don't have a strong position on this but seems at least plausible that the Israeli security services did in fact know about Oct 7th but chose not to act.

I mean come on... Hamas were seen practising flying hang gliders around the strip and one of the most paranoid states in the world didn't think that merited some investigation?

And everyone just happened to not be at their posts?

ifwinterco··on Tutoring company tells parents to save their money and 'use AI instead'
They're not really getting a leg up though, it will bite them later in life.

Young adults are less competent and resilient than ever for exactly this reason

ifwinterco··on Netherlands bracing for potentially devastating US sanctions against the ICC
Guys like Ben Gvir and Smotrich talk pretty openly about it all the time, people just don't want to listen for some reason.

They're not and never have been our friends, they detest us

ifwinterco··on Winning the visa lottery
The data in the UK says GDP goes up, GDP per capita and salaries go down (which is exactly what you'd expect to happen from first principles...).

So the trade is your country gets (sort of) richer overall and the elites get richer while the average person gets poorer.

If you're okay with that outcome, then yes no need to worry about the data!

ifwinterco··on English: A vs. An
"He has toothache" or "he has a toothache" are both correct (and mean exactly the same thing), but "he has the toothache" is just wrong, at least in modern English (in the sense that no native speaker would say that)
ifwinterco··on The Hugging Face Hack Wasn't What It Was Cracked Up to Be
Yes I have ruled out stupidity in the past but I am actually starting to reconsider.

For example consider FTX: Sam Bankman Fried by all accounts was not stupid in the sense of lacking IQ or mental sharpness, quite the opposite.

However the way he ran FTX the company was very stupid and almost inevitably lead to huge problems.

And also... of course he was another effective altruist cult member. It's almost like that belief system directly causes bad decision making

ifwinterco··on EU chief opens door for Canada to become 'associate member'
This is only part of the question though, the other question is is it actually good for the EU to continue growing and becoming more heterogenous indefinitely, which to me isn't at all clear.

You could make a good case that the EU is still trying to deal with issues from the 2004 expansion for example. Doesn't mean it was a bad idea, but it's not cost free

ifwinterco··on EU chief opens door for Canada to become 'associate member'
That could be a european Nato though, doesn't mean you need literally one EU army
ifwinterco··on Most people prefer traditional architecture
The missing part is that traditional building used to be cheap (in fact the cheapest way of building things).

What changed is labour costs in western countries relative to the cost of materials and other physical things

ifwinterco··on XCancel service is suspended until further notice
I actually wish all social media companies would do this aggressively so I have no choice but to stop using social media
ifwinterco··on Nike exits the S&P 100 after 18 years and a $200B market-cap wipeout
New Balance were Dad shoes 10 years ago but somehow they are now fashionable in the UK (also Asics).

I'd literally never heard of Hoka or On in my life though before this thread and they do not look fashionable

ifwinterco··on Revolut confirms customer data breach through fake government requests
Yeah the secure thing is to ignore all requests from domains without DKIM, but that would mean ignoring a lot of legitimate requests which is illegal.

Revolut are known to be a bit shady but in this case they're damned if they do and damned if they don't

ifwinterco··on Revolut confirms customer data breach through fake government requests
Revolut are well known for using automated systems for all support and it being difficult/impossible to talk to an actual human
ifwinterco··on Why are AI agents lying, cheating and coordinating?
And there is a guardrail you can put in place that will guarantee this doesn't happen, which is to air gap the unaligned "cyber grade" model you're testing.

They don't seem to do that, which means either they are:

- very stupid (which seems unlikely, the one thing these people don't lack is IQ)

- very careless (possible, but these are the same people that say AI will end the world, so would you be careless?)

- they think they can only train/test these models by giving them access to the full internet and they accept the fact they'll end up hacking random people as the cost of doing business (but this also suggests they don't believe they're anywhere near AGI because if you were worried about that you wouldn't do this)

- or they want this to happen

ifwinterco··on Waymo pulls over, calls cops on juvenile riders who had 'ghost gun"
The london riots were sparked by the police shooting Mark Duggan for (allegedly, no good evidence) carrying a gun around in a taxi.

People do definitely use regular taxis to transport both drugs and weapons sometimes

ifwinterco··on Resistance Training Prescription for Muscle Function, Hypertrophy in Health
The modern way to progress to chin ups normally involves bands and eccentrics, but you can also just do partial reps (starting with the top of the movement) and gradually work on adding depth.

(This also avoids the stress on your elbows that can happen from the bottom of the rep if not controlled well.)

If you're quite far off starting with bodyweight inverted rows and working up in reps will train your arms and elbows in a very similar way from an easier position.

Anything "partial" gets a bad rep from people ego lifting with weights but it can be a legitimate way to work up to calisthenics exercises and saves fiddling around with bands

ifwinterco··on Growing proof that autonomous cars save lives
Best way to improve the behaviour of other drivers (at least in the UK): drive a van, ideally an unmarked one with a couple of dents already.

Miraculously everyone else suddenly learns how to drive and doesn't try anything stupid
