- at some point someone, without evidence, speculated that cervix dilation should proceed along some curve
- cervix dilation is actually measured by hand - literally inserting fingers and having the doctor practice "so many fingers = so many centimeters". There's plastic sheets with holes in them so they can practice measuring the size of holes with fingers.
- the OBGYN knows that the cervix dilation curve should look like, and kinda sorta maps their hand readings to what it should look like
- the OBGYN has a general sense as to how labor is going, and will game the cervix dilation stats to match their expectation, e.g. if labor is going well but the cervix hasn't dilated then they'll kinda sorta report progress anyway
Anyway, given the above it seems like the data around cervix dilation is suspect - the measurements are fitted to what the curve should look like, and then the data matches the curve, and that makes people more confident in the curve, and so on.
The point is, can you really apply ML to the EMR of cervix dilation? Does it make sense, could you really draw conclusions from this?
So I’d add web-based or electron-based apps to your “unless” list.
Now we are heading into a future where you'd say "It's like Tinder, but for Republicans / some group / some other group".
Is this bad? I have no idea. It seems like it might solve a real problem. I live in San Francisco, and for science I've asked some of my friends questions like "Would you date a Republican?" or "Can you be a good person and vote for candidate X/Y/Z?", and the responses, well, let's just say that it is not favorable.
It’s totally fair to lose faith after seeing that.
A - The majority of data science insights is kinda useless for guiding software product direction. Much better to have a well defined strategy and just execute on that, tradeoffs and all. I have to engage in the game because that’s what my boss expects.
B - In 100 years we are going to look back at pet ownership with disdain, especially cats, because how could we keep these animals in an environment that’s so restrictive if they are indoors, and how could we unleash them on the ecology if they are outdoors?
C - If you want to help the poor, and save money on prison expenses, then funding public defenders is really the way to go.
D - I love the US and what it stands for, but if there hadn’t been a revolution then no big deal, we’d probably be in the same place more or less.
E - Govermentment intervention didn’t solve the great depression, it made it worse.
I hold these all equally strongly.
Apparently, balsa wood makes a good heat shield.
I have a cousin who is an opthamologist and he is totally against any laser surgery or even contacts, and the same with other opthamologists as well. He says to just wear glasses.
Thinking this through, the main pain point I've experienced is convincing people to act on the data, follow through, and connect changes in product (however defined) into changes in the metrics.
