idkwhoiam··on Only 90s Web Developers Remember This (2014)
Been there done that. Conditional CSS includes, CSS selector hacks to target different browsers. Good times. We also used JAVA applets for Ajax
idkwhoiam··on Show HN: GodotOS – Fake operating system interface made in the Godot engine
As an OSX user I had problems with VS Code only on 2 occasions: 1. Syntax highlighting gives up on larger files. What can be considered "large" depends on your machine of course. In this situation I use Sublime Text. 2. I worked on a web frontend that used React MUI (Material UI). That particular version of MUI & VScode combo didn't work at all. Intellisense would slow the editor down to where it was barely usable. That was a couple of years ago, never seen this issue again.
idkwhoiam··on I am the fold (2015)
For people not using CSS a lot, vh is a little tricky on mobile. I guess that's what's behind "kind of" in the parent comment. It has to do with the fact that the viewport size changes as you start scrolling down [0]

idkwhoiam··on Flare, a video sharing site built on Nostr

idkwhoiam··on Volkswagen Will Bring Back Physical Buttons in New Cars
Same here. I cannot stand using touch interface to do anything other than lightweight web browsing. I found an XBox One wireless controller worked wonders with my iPad for gaming.
idkwhoiam··on GM says it's dropping Apple CarPlay and Android Auto because they're unsafe
How long do you keep such cars? Also, 5/6 years old depending on mileage & make is usually the time for some expensive part replacements. Eg. water pump, thermostat & related sensors for BMW F30.
idkwhoiam··on Choose the browser that best suits your privacy needs
The moment uBlock Origin stops working I'm switching to Firefox. Websites are completely unusable without an ad blocker.
idkwhoiam··on EU tells Apple to open everything up to its rivals
Hey EU, can you please ask BMW to open everything up to its rivals so that I can use Toyota's infotainment system instead of BMW's iDrive. I also want to be able to run PS games on XBox & vice versa without having to buy separate copies.

And lastly, how about you open up your very own market to everyone by lifting protectionist taxes

idkwhoiam··on The casino in your pocket
You have just described my experience with Diablo Immortal
idkwhoiam··on Show HN: Nue – A React/Vue/Vite/Astro Alternative
It's an interesting project but the website is full of statements that range from strange to downright false. 1. The comparison to React's ListBox is unfair until you reach feature parity. 2. The "nue levels of speed" makes it look like Nue the tool beats the hell out of the competition but then in small text it says it's a comparison of the project home pages. Why would anyone care about the size of the project home page? 3. The whole section on Tailwind in the FAQ is just false.
idkwhoiam··on iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus
Hmm I wonder what was so "mindblowing" for them. I went from 6s plus to 13 pro and didn't notice a difference other than battery life & speed.
idkwhoiam··on Managing State with Signals
The native (future) solution for Apple platforms is SwiftUI [1] + Combine [2]. I use it on a side project and for somebody who works with React 9-5 it feels very natural. In short SwiftUI is like React & Combine is like RxJs.

idkwhoiam··on With new trade deal, Big Tech wants to be above the law
As a European living close to the crazy Ivan I'm grateful for US presence in the region. Otherwise many of us could be sitting in trenches right now
idkwhoiam··on Angular v16
Last time I worked on Ember app (many years ago) the selling point of Ember Data was seamless integration with JSON:API endpoints.
idkwhoiam··on ChatGPT Plugins
What do you use it for? As a web developer I use Github's Copilot and enjoy its assistance the most in unit tests. I haven't found any use case for ChatGPT yet. I get better & quicker results searching what I need on Google. I'm much quicker searching by keywords as opposed to putting together a full sentence for ChatGPT.
idkwhoiam··on You might not need an effect
This caught me off guard. I've never seen this pattern anywhere including popular 3rd party React libs. Therefore it doesn't feel right but their explanation makes sense.
idkwhoiam··on GitHub Copilot X – Sign up for technical preview
Translating ideas into code has never been the bottle neck in software development. Well, not in web dev anyways. Developers spend very little time writing code compared to reading. You still need all your expertise to guide copilot & evaluate its suggestions.

I see copilot as just another productivity tool. Combined with ChatGPT it may save a few roundtrips to Stack Overflow too.

idkwhoiam··on Introducing react.dev
> Here's my implementation, for the record: https://pastebin.com/rjj0FDDd

This implementation doesn't account for the fact that the promise may settle after the component has been unmounted.

idkwhoiam··on Konsta UI – Mobile UI Components Built with TailwindCSS
I do bare CSS for quick POCs but never on real projects. Vanilla JS & CSS sounds romantic when you solo but in a team setting it's better to use something we're all familiar with.

At work we switched over from SCSS modules+global styles to Tailwind last year and it has been great so far: 1. No more custom CSS. No need to think how to name your classes. No more unused CSS. 2. Code completion (VSCode plugin for TW classes) 3. Well documented. Even our BE developers are able to jump in and do minor changes.

The long CSS class name strings look funny but nobody complained about it in our team. Choose whatever works for your team. Tailwind has been nothing but a pleasure for us.

idkwhoiam··on Things I’ve learned in my years as a software engineer (2021)
I hope I'm not misinterpreting the point 11. As somebody with nearly 20 years in the field I found that the least knowledgeable people will often have the strongest opinions. Later in the career they learn there are no silver bullets, everything has trade offs and become more open minded.
idkwhoiam··on The art and science of spending money
I've been saving money for future smarter self who will know what to do with all the money. Here I am almost a decade later and I am not any smarter. I'm scared sh*less to invest so the 2x annual salary that I managed to save is just rotting in a savings account.
idkwhoiam··on One in four have accents mocked at work – survey
Are foreigners assigned a class too or is it a native thing only?
idkwhoiam··on EU Passes Law to Switch iPhone to USB-C by End of 2024
Just a regular day in the EU. Can the EU pass law for all cars to use the same tyre dimensions? A set of EU approved haircuts would also be very welcome! /s
idkwhoiam··on You don’t understand how bad it could get in Europe this year
Let's be honest here. Nobody is gonna put hundreds of millions of western European & American lives at risk to save 10 million of Eastern Europeans. The combined population of the three Baltic states is even less than 10mil. The idea of an Eastern Europe Union is laughable. Life in the post soviet countries has been getting better thanks to the EU. Had they not joined the EU they would still be poor countries like Moldova or Albania.
idkwhoiam··on Adobe to acquire Figma for $20B
RIP Figma. I can already see the Adobe installer coming back to my Mac, crazy pricing plans, etc, or the fate of Macromedia.
idkwhoiam··on Ask HN: How much does private health insurance cost you?
Also from crazy high taxation, inflation, and soon to come energy rationing
idkwhoiam··on Why do some humans love chili peppers?
Well you don't eat potatoes raw do you? Nor do you eat an eggplant raw and many others. I don't understand the argument here
idkwhoiam··on Map showing birthplaces of "notable people" around the world
> she can be a knight She cannot unless you mean cosplay.
idkwhoiam··on Fresh – Next-gen web framework
Cost is a big reason in many countries. PHP is still the cheaper option for dynamic websites. Shared webhosting costs peanuts.
