idbehold··on 'Skinny jabs': weight-loss drugs set for new boom as generic versions emerge
I just recently saw an ad for a pill version of these drugs which I didn't think was possible. Obviously everyone would rather take a pill than get a "jab" every month/week or whatever the cadence is.

idbehold··on Misunderstanding about the details of how Apply Pay works
The author should not be using pixilation as a method to redact information from his screenshots.
idbehold··on Selfish reasons to want more humans
The parent of this comment and everything inside it is not worth reading and completely off-topic.

react-query (or @tanstack/query as its now called) has a few things which make it a little awkward to use beyond very basic fetches:

1. No concept of normalization. Fetching a list of entity type vs fetching a detail of one of those entities means you end up fetching the same data twice since the cache is only per query, not entity. And good luck trying to mutate its cache yourself to force it to cache by entity.

2. No good way to get the data out of react-query and into, say, my mobx/redux store.

3. Its query cache is global, but the `select` cache is per component/subscriber.

You sure about that? https://github.com/facebook/react/blob/main/packages/react/s...

idbehold··on React has not had a new release since June 2022
Why the heck is a view library monkeypatching fetch??
idbehold··on Noisy brain may underlie some of autism's sensory features
Brilliant! I finally have a term for it. Though, while it does happen more often when I'm sick, it still sometimes happens when I'm not. Maybe I just have a hot-running brain. Anyways, thank you again for an actual term I can search with.
idbehold··on Noisy brain may underlie some of autism's sensory features
I don't think this is the same thing as "noisy brain", but I'm wondering if anyone else has experienced this before since it sounded similar. Sometimes, typically when I'm sick and I'm trying to sleep through the symptoms (e.g. sleep all night and all day), it seems like my brain gets bored or something and suddenly I cannot stop thinking/dreaming about something. That something is different every time it happens, but it's the same thing over and over repeating in my head. Eventually my head starts to hurt and I'm seemingly forced to be awake as it is the only way to stop this.
idbehold··on A decade-old Steam bug
Seriously, it's like a cruel joke. TL;DR - don't do this, instead read the entire article!
idbehold··on California Pizza Hut operators laying off all delivery drivers
This is unfortunate since Pizza Hut is quite possibly the best pizza available in California. Does anyone from California know why the pizza selection is so awful there?
idbehold··on Don't let websites overwrite clipboard in Firefox
It's X11 which is asking applications what was selected when determining what will be pasted from middle click. To be secure X11 should be maintaining its own buffer which can only be updated via user interaction instead of relying on every application to implement this security measure themselves.

It's also a security issue with the shells that are interpreting a pasted new-line character. The author of that post is delusional to claim that none of the blame should be placed on the shells.

I wish we could get a new HN guideline to not make comments for or against ligatures in monospaced fonts. You're not going to convince anyone.
idbehold··on Boeing 787 capable of carrying 300 passengers lands in Antarctica in world first
It's not clear in the same way as if the title had been: "pilot idbehold lands plane carrying 300 passengers in Antarctica in world first"

People are assuming the "world first" to apply to everything after "pilot idbehold", not exclusively to it.

idbehold··on Eliminating a memory is fairly simple, once you have the right tools
There is no antimemetics division.
idbehold··on With Firefox on X11, any page can pastejack you anytime (middle button paste)
Take this logic one step up: it's X11 which is allowing applications to set the middle click buffer. X11 should only be allowing that to be set from direct user-interaction as any application could be nefariously setting it.
idbehold··on Hacker News Classic
I use dark reader, but I just know one day I'll wake up to news that it had secretly been sold a month prior and had been doing all kinds of nefarious things. This is inherently a problem with browser extensions that both auto-update and basically require access to every website.
idbehold··on Anything longer ago than yesterday should just say the actual date
The point is that both are technically correct. At 12:00am on January 1 that happens to fall on a Monday something that occurred 1 second ago can be considered to have taken place: last week (depending on when you consider weeks to start/end), last month, last year, yesterday, etc.
idbehold··on Node.js – v20.8.0
One thing that bugs me about the "140% improvement" PR is that even the author only has some hand-wavy theory as to why that change from local variables to an object with those two properties made such a drastic improvement. V8 performance (well, let's be honest, any JS runtime's performance) is just a bunch of guess and check work.

idbehold··on Cache headers could probably be more aggressive
Acting like Last-Modified is somehow substandard is a bit disingenuous. The If-None-Match (etag) request header takes priority over the If-Modified-Since (last-modified) request header (if both are sent), but they provide identical functionality (caching and preventing modification if out of date) and are both part of the HTTP standard.
idbehold··on Cache headers could probably be more aggressive
It might be easier, but it's strictly worse caching since all static assets get invalidated every deployment instead of just the assets which changed.
idbehold··on Cache headers could probably be more aggressive
Sure, I was simply pointing out that one doesn't need to implement ETags to have 304 responses.
idbehold··on Cache headers could probably be more aggressive
You can implement Last-Modified instead.
idbehold··on Unity has seemingly silently removed its GitHub repo that tracks ToS changes
Ah, the difference here is that game developers have alternatives to Unity. You can't verify Google's numbers, but fortunately for them there's no (meaningful) alternative. The advantages of being a monopoly!
