icey··on iPhone Air
I will buy one of these because I want a phone that doesn't create such a huge bulge in my pants pocket
icey··on Things that helped me get out of the AI 10x engineer imposter syndrome
The company I work at (https://getunblocked.com) is built to give tools like Claude Code and Cursor context based on all your docs, issues, code, and chat threads from Slack and soon Teams. Happy to give you a demo sometime if you're interested!
icey··on Grammarly acquires Superhuman
They might have a lot more cash than you'd expect: https://www.grammarly.com/blog/company/grammarly-announces-g...
icey··on CT Scans of New vs. Used SawStop
Cutting a rabbet? Probably should have used a sacrificial fence, but it's easy to see how this could happen.
icey··on Launch HN: Human Layer (YC F24) – Human-in-the-Loop API for AI Systems
Looks amazing! (Also, I've known Dexter since before Human Layer and he's a force of nature. If you think this is interesting now, you're going to be amazed at where it goes)
icey··on Launch HN: Trellis (YC W24) – AI-powered workflows for unstructured data
Great idea. I used to work at Instabase, which you probably compete with. The better you are at dealing with dodgy PDFs and document scans, the more valuable this will be to big banks, shipping companies, etc.
icey··on Waymo One is now open to everyone in San Francisco
They've been in Phoenix for the past two years (generally available for the past year). They're so commonplace now, I don't think anyone really notices them.
icey··on How to build a $20B semiconductor fab
A few possible reasons: Cheap & reliable electricity (https://www.axios.com/local/phoenix/2024/04/26/arizona-power...), low seismic activity (https://www.spglobal.com/mobility/en/research-analysis/brief...), existing semiconductor supporting industries (as mentioned elsewhere in this thread), and a politically favorable business environment.
icey··on Clojure's machine learning ecosystem
Isn’t this effectively OCaml? Minus the Fortran part but it doesn’t need any other runtime.
icey··on Threads users down by more than a half
I'd use it a lot more if it had a web client.
icey··on Waymo One doubles service area in Phoenix, continues growing in SF
I drive a couple of times a month... It's not the most walkable city but the downtown area is fairly walkable
icey··on Waymo One doubles service area in Phoenix, continues growing in SF
I haven't taken one since they announced the change (I'm in a part of Phoenix that's pretty walkable), but I think it will be 3 in the rear bench and one in the passenger seat. They've been pretty clear that they don't want people sitting in the driver's seat, and I'm guessing that will continue to be the case with this change.
icey··on Waymo One doubles service area in Phoenix, continues growing in SF
Here's one concrete example -- these cars almost never take left hand turns. They'll route multiple right hand turns to get somewhere, which makes it feel much less risky when pulling onto a busy street from a neighborhood, for example.
icey··on Waymo One doubles service area in Phoenix, continues growing in SF
Same here (downtown Phoenix area) -- the driverless Waymos have been awesome. Occasionally they get confused but it seems pretty rare. They're better than a lot of the other drivers on the road out here.

I'm mostly excited that they upped the allowed passenger count from 3 to 4. Usually we take a car if we're going out to dinner with friends but the 3 passenger limit made taking one of these a pain in the ass or impossible.

icey··on Career advice no one gave me: Give a lot of notice when you quit
As an employer, the flipside of this is that there needs to be some value in having someone there that you know is leaving. If someone has been halfway checked out because they've been interviewing elsewhere, it might not be worth keeping them around for six weeks. They can't start any long-running work, or anything with any dependencies, and many people's work quality drops significantly after putting in their notice.

It's a nice idea, for sure; but most jobs can be transitioned in 2 weeks. Anything longer than that and all sense of urgency is lost ("We can transition that in a month", etc).

I've quit both ways -- with a long notice period and a short one, and short notice periods are the only times that there's been an actual transition plan.

icey··on Tell HN: Heroku deleted my database with no warning
The same thing happened to me, but I was fortunate enough to catch it in time for them to restore it. Very disappointing because I was paying Heroku over $100/month for various things and didn’t realize an actively used project was on a free tier.
icey··on Show HN: Deploy Button for GPT-3 API Back Ends
This looks slick! You can generate images and audio with this?!? Seems a lot faster than doing it myself
icey··on Ink – Inkle's narrative scripting language
This is off-label use for sure, but we support Ink in Abbot. If you want to play around with it in Slack, sign up for a free trial at https://ab.bot then visit https://app.ab.bot/settings/organization/advanced and click "Allow Custom Skills" under "Bot Development Settings". Then you can create Ink skills and call them from chat.

Full disclosure, but we're probably going to deprecate Ink support soon because there are lots of little edge cases and warts that take too much time to support vs. how many of our customers use Ink. Still, fun to play with and you can do some crazy stuff!

icey··on TSMC ups Arizona investment from $12B to $40B with second semi fab
There have been people living where Phoenix sits today for at least 1,500 years. The canals in Phoenix were originally dug by the Hohokam 1,400+ years ago. Dutch settlers used what remained to design the canal system that's used today. Here's a cool article that describes some of what they built http://www.azheritagewaters.nau.edu/loc_hohokam.html
icey··on TSMC ups Arizona investment from $12B to $40B with second semi fab
There are a lot: https://www.chipsetc.com/semiconductor-companies-in-arizona....
icey··on TSMC ups Arizona investment from $12B to $40B with second semi fab
For at least part of this, ASML has had a large facility in the Phoenix metro (Tempe) for quite a few years. Assuming that's one of the Dutch companies you're referring to.

TSMC is going to benefit from the microchip industry that's already in Phoenix thanks to Intel's enormous presence here.

icey··on Launch HN: Unthread (YC S22) – Customer support, entirely within Slack
Abbot CEO here! Appreciate the kind words, we hope you enjoyed your trial before starting Unthread :)

It's true that we use a bot user in channels - we do this to help synchronize conversations that happen in Slack with other systems. We figure that conversations happen in Slack but often get shared elsewhere. Abbot only responds if customers set it up to do that.

Good luck with your launch!

icey··on Tell HN: Slack is having network issues in Threads and group DMs/channels
Super frustrating bug. We provide support via Slack and it's driving me crazy not knowing if a customer has asked a question or if it's the bug. We're luckier than most since we build a product that keeps track of unanswered questions from customers in Slack, but I couldn't imagine trying to provide support just using regular threads / unread indicators. Would almost rather Slack was down instead of confusing.
icey··on Lufthansa bans AirTags in checked luggage
At the least this gives them some poor counterargument if someone says they were able to track their lost bag with an Airtag.

"What do you mean, you have an Airtag in your bag? We don't have any guarantees for baggage containing banned materials."

icey··on I’m consuming 5500 hours of Joe Rogan with the help of AI
This is equal parts hilarious and great. I got an especially good laugh out of:

> “Enias, you work at an NLP startup. Just have the computer tell you what this guy thinks”.

Pretty sure that's how we end up with Skynet /s

Do you have to have the transcriptions available or can this work on any audio?

icey··on Show HN: A framework for building Slack bots in Python
Maybe fly.io? They have a pretty generous free tier.
icey··on Steamship: Heroku for Language AI
We got early access to the Steamship API and it's been awesome so far. Worth checking out if you want to add NLP to your application but don't have the expertise in-house.
icey··on Ask HN: How would you build a night owl-friendly office?
As someone who used to work graveyards in an environment like this: buy yourself a desk lamp and save your sanity.
icey··on Y Combinator narrows current cohort size by 40%, citing downturn and funding
We went through S21, which was a large batch (400 or so). While we made great connections with folks in our little corner of the world, we definitely did not make a ton of connections broadly across the batch. In fact, we still meet people who are in our batch and we had no idea. Same for conversations with speakers - just not feasible given the size of the program.
icey··on Launch HN: Warrant (YC S21) – Authorization and access control as a service
This is an awesome idea. Hope you have a lot of success, and congrats on the launch!
