icey··on Ask HN: Best Recipe Search Engine?
Semi-related, but can anyone recommend a website for cocktail recipes?
icey··on $200M seed valuation for Roam shows investor frenzy for note-taking apps
There are already free / free-ish clones of Roam:

  * org-roam: https://github.com/org-roam/org-roam
  * Obsidian: https://obsidian.md/
  * Athens: https://github.com/athensresearch/athens
icey··on $200M seed valuation for Roam shows investor frenzy for note-taking apps
I'm not convinced Notion's valuation is sane either...
icey··on $200M seed valuation for Roam shows investor frenzy for note-taking apps
No other note-taking service has been able to get me to stop using paper notebooks the way Roam has. I think it's because the default view is a daily diary and it's low-friction to use it. The linking is simple enough that I actually do it (versus having to remember to do it consistently). I'm undecided if it's software that I'd pay a lot for every month, but it is nicer than Notion for my use case.

All that being said... wow, that's a crazy valuation!

icey··on Django 3.1
It’s no longer true (at least the performance bits), especially with the upcoming release of .NET 5.
icey··on The terms of the AGPL are pretty easy to comply with
From doing many sales negotiations with companies, my experience has been nobody is _happy_ to modify their contracts. Full stop. They can be convinced to do so if you've got appropriate leverage, but time with lawyers is expensive, and hard to automate (currently). Employment contract changes are not the same as commercial contracts, nor the same as IP arrangements.
icey··on Pentagon's UFO Unit to Disclose Some of Its Findings to the Public
(posted in another thread before realizing this was the active one)

Has a timeline for the announcement been mentioned in any of these articles? So far it's only been that there will be some kind of announcement, but I can't find any suggestions of when. Sometimes I wonder if these leaks are strategic as a way to say "hey, if this is you, last chance to come forward before we talk about this publicly"; maybe a little more "are you suuuuuuure these aren't your toys?" before someone finally comes out and says "We found this weirdly shaped hunk of metal and it seems cool but we don't know how to make it".

The conspiracy theorist in me hopes that we found something on Mars, and that's what's been causing all the expeditions out there recently.

icey··on I built a deep learning-powered emoji Slackbot
Thanks! This is pretty cool. Interesting that you had to spend so much time on the infrastructure side of things (both wrestling with Sagemaker, and with Slack's API rules). Seems like a lot of people end up in that same spot when trying to ship models into production.

Either way, I appreciate the non-paywalled link!

The title is compelling, but I can't read it because of Medium's obnoxious paywall ransom (https://i.imgur.com/sJWoFM8.png). Out of curiosity -- as an author, is this how you hope that Medium would treat your content? I don't know much about how people try to monetize their blogs, but the folks I've talked to who want to monetize their content seem to prefer something like Substack, which has a much more honest business model (in that they're up front about it all).

Anyways, sorry for the first comment on your submission to be a complaint about Medium, but it's really annoying to discover another domain pointed to their paywall.

icey··on Cloudflare was down
Seeing a lot of people mentioning DO, but it has been up for me without any issues (small VPS in SF-2)
icey··on Building a self-updating profile README for GitHub
heh, I just knocked together a little viewcounter / webring thing that does this exactly this. I haven't spent much time with SVG in the past, but it was really easy to do. (This was an excuse for me to play with both SVGs and Nim).

It's just XML so it's really simple (here's the webring thing, if you want to see for yourself: https://github.com/pmn/randos.online)

icey··on Palantir Announces Confidential Submission of Draft S-1
The political environment is different now, with so many democrats running under a platform of LE reform. It may amount to nothing, or may even be a boon; but it’s uncertain which way it will go for now, just that it’s likely to change. One way to lessen the risk of a negative change would be to IPO now while the numbers still show great growth.
icey··on Palantir Announces Confidential Submission of Draft S-1
If I were Palantir I'd be worried about the funding from my primary customers (defense, law enforcement, ICE) in the likely coming very Democratic federal government. There's been a lot of noise made about changing how much money is being spent on law enforcement, which would directly impact Palantir's bottom line. If they can IPO and gracefully transition to private sector work, then they'll be golden; but afaict private sector hasn't gone as well as they'd hoped yet.
icey··on As many as 6B Earth-like planets in our galaxy, according to new estimates
I can't wait for the James Webb Space Telescope to launch -- really excited to see what we've been blind to so far. Sadly, it's been delayed again due to COVID-19 (it was most recently scheduled for March of next year), but _whenever_ it launches it's sure to bring us eye-popping new images of space.
icey··on Thank HN: My startup was born here and is now 10 years old
It's pretty cool to see something get launched here and have the founder come back TEN YEARS LATER to talk about it. That's crazy rare. HN was a little smaller then, so it's fun to see names you haven't seen in awhile talking about the same stuff as before.
icey··on Ask HN: What is the cheapest way to make a website?
GitHub + Netlify makes a really nice combo as well, since Netlify helps with simple form handling (and a bunch of other niceties)
icey··on GitHub is experimenting with personal READMEs
There was someone working on LaTeX support a few years ago, but iirc it was very difficult to secure it enough to feel comfortable letting it run server-side for rendering. Source: I worked there when they were working on it.
icey··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (February 2020)
This is a great company with an awesome engineering culture — you should talk to them if this connects with you at all. (I spent some time with this team in 2018 and only have amazing things to say about them)
icey··on W3C recommends WebAssembly
So much frontend JS has been packed and minified now that I’m not sure it will make that much difference. Reviewing Open Source code is still a far superior way to understand how code works, imo.
icey··on Do transportation network companies decrease or increase congestion?
It's not just the number of cars causing issues; the number of roads with ad hoc lane closures due to ride sharing pick-ups and dropoffs makes a huge difference. Many three lane streets get choked down to one lane if a delivery truck blocks a right lane and a ride share blocks the left. It's very visible every rush hour in SF.
icey··on A16Z is re-registering as a financial advisor, renouncing its status as a VC
Cool, and I use some of those too; but there have been cases _for me_ where BTC has been a lot easier.
icey··on A16Z is re-registering as a financial advisor, renouncing its status as a VC
Sometimes it's nicer to send money than it is to authorize someone to take money from an account, especially if you're unsure of the recipient's ability or desire to protect that account information (credit card number, bank account info, etc). For me, Bitcoin has effectively replaced cashier's checks.
icey··on Ask HN: What backpack are you using?
Synapse 19 here and love it 3 years in
icey··on Andreessen Horowitz is opening an office in SF
Hmm. I'm at my second a16z funded startup and they have been tremendously helpful at both. Their briefing program is unique and genuinely helpful, and the firm has been very useful with introductions and helping find executive hires. I'm sure there are founders who haven't had good experiences with them; but I know a ton who have.
icey··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (February 2019)
Instabase | Machine Learning Engineer | San Francisco, NYC, Boston, Bangalore | on-site | full-time

Founded in 2015, Instabase is a cross-cloud operating system with a powerful suite of data processing applications. We have taken $23M Series A funding from Andreessen Horowitz, Greylock, and NEA, and we have strong customer and revenue growth. Instabase is used in universities (Stanford, Columbia) and large financial institutions in Asia and the US, both as a platform for collaboration and a tool to automate human-intensive workflows. We're an engineering driven company, scaling rapidly driven by customer demand.

We take the latest techniques from research labs around the world, evaluate them against each other, and adapt them into products for use in industry. Living at at that edge of research and production is the “secret ingredient” that powers many of our capabilities as a platform.

We are hiring engineers across our stack. We look for people who have a bias toward action, who enjoy finding patterns amid chaos, and who are capable of driving a project from whiteboard sketches to completion.

Specific roles we'd love to talk to you about:

- Frontend Engineer - Machine Intelligence Apps (https://grnh.se/b742155c2)

- Software Engineer (https://grnh.se/6e1a9d042)

- Software Engineer - Computer Vision (https://grnh.se/41981d182)

- Software Engineer - Natural Language Processing (NLP) (https://grnh.se/afdd0a1d2)

- SRE / DevOps Engineer (https://grnh.se/2638298a2)

You can contact us directly at careers@instabase.com, or you're welcome to reach out to me privately to answer any questions (my email is in my profile)

icey··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (December 2018)
Having spent some time with this team, I can vouch for how great they are. Something not mentioned that's pretty cool is that the engineering team gets to work a lot with their customers, who include companies like npm, Travis, and HashiCorp. If you're in LA, and interested in developer tools and startups, it will be tough for you to find a better place to join.
icey··on Ask HN: What is your advice for a technical founder learning sales?
To add to this, if you don't know how your product is sold, your first salesperson is going to have a much harder time doing it since you won't be able to share anything about what resonates with customers and what doesn't. Most of the good salespeople you'd want to hire as your first won't go anywhere that the founder isn't already doing sales.
icey··on Microsoft Joins the Open Invention Network
When does the timer start? Microsoft started open sourcing a lot of its core technology over four years ago (.NET Core being one example).
icey··on Rich Hickey on Datomic Ions [video]
This is about a feature of the Datomic database called Ions, which appear to be analogous to stored procedures (e.g. running Clojure functions in the db). From reading https://docs.datomic.com/cloud/ions/ions.html, that's an oversimplification, but I didn't know what it was so figured I'd save someone a search.
