icedata··on Richard Feynman and the Connection Machine (1989)
Danny Hillis was an MIT colleague of a friend of mine. Didn't know until now that Connection Machine had Darpa funding.
icedata··on Learning to code is still worthwhile
I worked with Seymour Papert when he was chairman of Logo Computer Systems. Also the author (with Marvin Minsky) of Perceptrons, an early book on Neural Networks. Really ahead of his time.
icedata··on Show HN: A ready-to-adapt email marketing sequences database
We never even tried email marketing at my current company. At my previous one we had a lot of issues (boss didn't believe that spamassassin would block our efforts, he was wrong (we weren't initially using an email marketing platform)). Now I am using Waalaxy, which does linkedin and email prospecting (I only use Linkedin). Since I rarely accept unexpected connection requests myself, I was quite surprised at the effectiveness of Waalaxy, about 10% of connections requests accepted out of 1000 sent, several meetings booked, now doing phone followup on the remainder of connections.
icedata··on Show HN: TurtleSpaces Web Logo – online 3D Logo implementation
Scratch was written by some of the same people behind popular versions of Logo used in the 80's
icedata··on WeWork Plans to File for Bankruptcy as Early as Next Week
I went to Regus a few times several years ago when they had a promotion in Toronto. Even for free, it sucked. Bad atmosphere, claustrophobic, etc.
icedata··on An ARM Assembler Written in Lisp
At LCSI we had assemblers and debugging tools for 6502, x86 and others written in LMI Lisp, which we used to create several popular commercial versions of Logo.
icedata··on 30% of YC companies exposed through SVB can’t make payroll in the next 30 days
Actually, the entire incident can be seen as an effective educational exercise.
icedata··on Ask HN: What story from the PDP-8 era would make a good script?
Not PDP-8, but PDP-11, the time my former boss went to Algeria to fix one on his own and succeeded. That's all I know about it. You can make up stuff to fill in the blanks.
icedata··on At least $1B of client funds missing at failed crypto firm FTX
you know, a billion here and a billion there, pretty soon you're talking about real money.
icedata··on Magic Leap 2
Having worked with Steve for a while, I can assure you that he believes he was ripped off. Only a judge can decide for sure.
icedata··on Ask HN: What's your note-taking methodology?
ditto. Using git takes the worry out of using it, gives you a granular restoration process. I've only needed it once in the last year, but it was worth it. I use plain emacs.
icedata··on Scratch is a big deal
We tried it the other way. I worked for a decade at Logo Computer Systems, where the principal designer of Scratch used to work. Eventually schools tired of teaching kids text-based coding.
icedata··on Governor Newsom announces California will make its own insulin
I completely agree. I live in Canada, and run a weekly Zoom call on startups etc. We have quite a few members from India, Latin America and elsewhere and I find it useful to get their perspectives. I even have callers from China (you need to change the Zoom data center config to permit this). These are people that I met on WeChat groups (unfortunately not a realistic option outside China for most right now), and some former students. We try to stay away from politics, but interestingly there is a wide range of points of view from Chinese callers.
icedata··on An Alleged Fraud Uncovered by a Short Seller Ends in Gunfire
Vegas location is a big clue. Read about Howard Hughes associates and casino finance history.
icedata··on Peloton got trapped in its trillion-dollar fantasy
Be careful what you ask for. If companies need to be profitable to be considered successful, where will it end?
icedata··on Russia 'Likely' to Default on Debts
Elba?
icedata··on Bad Emacs Advice
I just printed out the pdf version of the book. I found a shop that would bind it for me and print it double-sided.

icedata··on My Personal Note Taking Journey
I also use git to make backups of my org-mode files. I made a simple script in git bash for windows to commit changes to local repo and then push to a remote repo. I did this because I discovered that dropbox was no longer versioning my org files as I expected. Not sure why but I'm way more comfortable with a local and remote git repo. I run the script several times a day. There are libraries for emacs that can automate this process but I haven't bothered.
icedata··on Ask HN: How do you force yourself to do boring tasks?
I tried to use GTD for quite a while. I abandoned it in favor of Timeboxing, using Work Clean for the precise implementation. I used org-mode to put it to use, it's flexible enough even though GTD was a big influence on its design.

icedata··on Ask HN: Tiny Home for $5k USD?
Key point here is that the VA donated the land. In the 20's in Germany, many homes were built on land donated by various churches. Churches, groups like the VA and others own a lot of land, if they can be convinced to help out it would make a big difference.
icedata··on Ask HN: Why is there no good open-source LMS?
I deployed the open-source version of Canvas for use at a summer course at a university in Beijing (it was done remotely). Just getting it installed was the hardest part. We hosted on Alibaba in Hong Kong (no web site license required there). Support for the open-source version comes via IRC and was actually quite good. Show-stopper was a rapidly growing log file (due to a persistent error I couldn't figure out). Eventually had to create a cron job to regularly truncate it. Apart from that it was pretty solid. The other tricky thing was getting outbound email to work (not very well documented). Persistence pays.
icedata··on Easylang – An easy online programming language and development environment
Reminds me of Logo as well (I worked for the top producer of Logo implementations). Would be interesting to read some comment on its lineage from the designers.
icedata··on Lightsail Containers: An Easy Way to Run Your Containers in the Cloud (2020)
Digital Ocean isn't accessible in China. Lightsail and AWS are. GCP also works. We hosted in Japan and HK on Lightsail for production projects for use in mainland China. We did run into the performance cap, so eventually switched from Lightsail to AWS proper.
icedata··on The ‘Dune’ Screenplay Was Written in Movie Master on MS-DOS
I use emacs and org-mode all day long, and never tweak it unless there's a really strong reason. My goal is to keep it as close to vanilla as possible.
icedata··on Ask HN: Companies of one, what is your tech stack?
Hi Talaba, can you provide a little more detail about which Lisp libraries you use?
icedata··on Billions in 'unknown' funds flowing into Canada's housing market [video]
Recently, in large parts of the Greater Toronto Area, it has not been legal to rent out rooms in your house. It was and is legal in the original city of Toronto and other municipalities that were later incorporated into the megacity. There is a proposal before city council to legalize it across the city, but so far no decision has been made.
icedata··on Spintronics: Build Mechanical Circuits
Same thing happened to me with Digi-comp II, although I was the kid and I thought that I had screwed up the assembly. The model printed on the cover had wooden bars and looked a lot more reliable, but the production model was plastic and not reliable at all.
icedata··on Why Working from Home Will Stick
We do our daily meetings audio-only and it's definitely less stressful. Less is more.
icedata··on History of Logo (2020) [pdf]
Later Logo development took place at several firms, including LCSI in Montreal (I worked there for ten years). Later versions were cross-assembled on Lisp Machines, and later on on Apple IIGS with 4 MB of ram (custom lisp version).
