icecreammatt··on You do not need NixOS on the desktop
You can run Ableton as a non Steam game on NixOS. It was a bit of a pain to install in Steam and then update path to correct proton version but it definitely works. There are probably are easier ways to run it without steam but that’s how I got it working.

Ugh this makes me sick. This is one of my favorite games.

icecreammatt··on I Replaced My MacBook Pro with a Raspberry Pi 4 8GB for a Day
Pretty much, I think it just needs a slightly faster CPU to handle loading JavaScript heavy pages.
icecreammatt··on I Replaced My MacBook Pro with a Raspberry Pi 4 8GB for a Day
I just got an 8GB one and it works well enough for YouTube and light browsing but I couldn’t use it as a dedicated machine. Certainly is more snappy than the older ones I have. Just visiting the YouTube home page seems to really be pushing it though.
icecreammatt··on Fortnite’s success led to months of intense crunch at Epic Games
What about all the work they have done with VR, Linux, and supporting like any common game controller with most steam games?
icecreammatt··on Apple rejects Valve’s Steam Link game streaming app over ‘business conflicts’
You can buy games with the existing Steam app. I do it all the time during the sales.
icecreammatt··on Age of Empires: Definitive Edition Beta
You should checkout the HD edition that is on Steam. It is exactly like the original but with higher resolution and multi monitor support. It was exactly what I wanted.

Edit: I thought this was AOEII, after looking at the site more I realized this is AOE.

icecreammatt··on Ask HN: Is there anything worth purchasing on Black Friday/Cyber Monday?
Valve has indicated that support for it is coming soon. Their recent developer conference they demoed it running on Linux. I'm not sure how well it's going to work on Mac with the lack of decent graphics cards unless maybe using a Hackintosh.
icecreammatt··on Amazon S3 and Glacier Price Reductions
I use Arq (https://www.arqbackup.com/) and it works very well. I've only tested retrieving small amounts of data from it so I can't comment much on a large bill. I only wish it worked on Linux. I've been thinking about seeing if it would work with Wine.
icecreammatt··on Arch Linux adapted for Windows Subsystem for Linux
The guide linked above was the same one I used. Honestly it took me quite a while to get it all working. I had to buy a separate soundcard since I wasn't able to get the one on the motherboard to pass through the audio correctly without static noise in it. Once I got the HTC Vive I ended up just going back to a dedicated Windows install and built a separate machine just for Linux stuff. Saved me lots of headache.
icecreammatt··on Arch Linux adapted for Windows Subsystem for Linux
You can run multiple VM's at the same time as long as you have a separate GPU to assign for each VM. There are videos on Youtube of people demoing this.
icecreammatt··on Arch Linux adapted for Windows Subsystem for Linux
You can run your host OS using the integrated graphics and assign the dedicated card to the Windows VM
icecreammatt··on OnHub
I just bought a Zigbee Winkhub because I was looking into something to play around with to remotely control lights. I also wanted something that I could hack and run my own code on. The Winkhub is relatively easy to hack. I've only been using mine for about a week now but am very happy with it. I've only tested mine with lights so far.
icecreammatt··on Git tips from the trenches
I have an alias that I have created that prevents the branch you are currently on or master from being deleted.

alias gclean='git remote prune origin; git branch --merged | grep -v -E "(\*|master)" | xargs -n 1 git branch -d'

icecreammatt··on Show HN: Gitty for GitHub
This app is great for reading notifications on the go. I've been testing it for a few weeks and definitely prefer it to visiting the website on my phone.
