iceburgcrm··on Ask HN: How Are People Designing Apps in the Age of AI?
I've moved to create metadata driven applications. This approach works well with AI as AI can be used to generate the metadata which powers the application.

For example I created an open source metadata crm called IceburgCRM iceburg.ca (available in Django / Laravel) recently. Without AI involved you could configure the crm by inserting data in the database. For example you add an entry for accounts, contacts, etc in the modules table and your crm will have menu links and a module section setup for accounts, contacts.

With AI you can now generate metadata needed to create custom crms. For example typing in "create a wine crm" in the AI prompt I build I can generate:

https://wine.iceburg.ca

"create a crm for bee keeping": https://beekeeping.iceburg.ca

"create a coffee lovers crm": https://coffee.iceburg.ca

Using AI in traditional applications opens up a new dimension for us crud developers. I think we will see a shift to more metadata applications in the future as the benefits become clear. It's a new field using a different type of creativity and some old school design patterns.

iceburgcrm··on Instantly Turn Any Webpage into an API
I've created an open source crm / crm creator (iceburg.ca). I can create a crm from any existing database, from text using AI or custom parameters or use a number of premade templates.

I was looking at adding creating a crm from any website/page.

I'm interested in discussing steps 1 - 3. Using scrappingbee is expensive. I've brought down the price of a crm creation through AI to about 1 1/2 cents (+3 cents if you want a custom cover image). Have you looked at running something locally. I'm using laravel and was considering using Dusk to retrieve the contents.

What are you using for cleaning? Regex removals of tags?

iceburgcrm··on Twenty, a modern CRM alternative to Salesforce
Extremely easy.

I built IceburgCRM (available in Django or Laravel). You can create a specialized crm with only a few words. For example: "create a stamp collecting crm". Modules, Fields, Relationships, Subpanels, default data and even a image for your homepage is created.

Data can be imported/exported into 6 different formats. Supports unlimited many to many relationships, 26 different themes, etc.

This is what the default crm looks like: https://demo.iceburg.ca/

Here are some samples I generated:

Gourmet Coffee Enthusiasts CRM

https://coffee.iceburg.ca

Bee Keeping CRM https://beekeeping.iceburg.ca

You can also manage an existing database as a CRM.

Here is a default wordpress database crm.

iceburgcrm··on Ask HN: Anybody else back on Laravel/PHP after 12 years of Express/Django/Flask?
I've seen working with Laravel for years. I recently (Friday) released a Django version for my AI CRM builder (provide a few words and use ChatGPT to build a CRM)

I used packages with similiar functionality to Laravel (orator, Django Breeze)

Everything translated well. The choice of backend didn't matter as much as I thought it would.

Using VS Code compared to PHPStorm was the only part of the experience that felt degrading. Using PyCharm might have changed that.

I don't think it matters as much as it once did.

iceburgcrm··on Why Linux developers do not fix reported issues or ignore bug reports
Large companies hire people to work on open source. Some use their clout to influence standards.

As a developer I like that companies hire for open source. As a user the quality increases with full time employees. What we don't notice is many projects morph to fit corporate needs because they become important stakeholders.

Money and power corrupt by design.

iceburgcrm··on [dead]
I create a CRM in Django CRM converting it from my popular Laravel CRM project. The default CRM mirrors SugarCRM/Suite structure. It also has some new features like unlimited relationships between modules.

The cool feature is it is also an AI powered CRM that lets you create a CRM by describing it.

pip install iceburgcrm https://github.com/iceburgcrm/iceburgcrmpython

This is my first Django project. I tried to reuse as much code as possible so the application mirrors a Laravel application using orator, Django Breeze.

I would love any feedback and suggestions for best practices.

iceburgcrm··on After Furiosa flops, Hollywood could be facing a biblically disastrous summer
Could be as simple as the cost and lack of money. Weak content / weak promotions. Covid: packing into a small area with many strangers inside for hours seems risky now.
iceburgcrm··on Productivity Versus Alignment
That becomes a branding issue. Many large companies own many smaller brands that are kept independent. You see this a lot in food also with mobile where each smaller brand can focus a smaller group. This gives customers choice but keeps profits with the entity.

It might be because an electronic payment system can accept exact tender and / or the options to tip defaults to lower payment options / easier to hide a small tip to your friends

With cash few have exact change and the table can see what you give. This leads to rarely asking for change back and putting higher amounts as it ups your social ranking.

This effect is easier to see in a bar.

Often you need to keep track of dollar per unit sold as some staff will overpour

iceburgcrm··on To the brain, reading computer code is not the same as reading language (2020)
I think communication layers are critical as well. On a team they are more important than the coding and that's why you hire someone to lead and organize everything.

Removing the large team removes those layers and it's why a two person team can do the work of 12.

Adding in documentation, training materials and providing support can happen at the end of the development cycle freeing you to support the project 100%.

It's not that you remove communication or documentation but do it at select intervals. Don't do a full scan of a table everytime you need a value found in the index.

iceburgcrm··on To the brain, reading computer code is not the same as reading language (2020)
I find removing the organizing and communication layers greater increases your velocity. For each idea we need to communicate to others or ourselves (in a linear language) involves a translating process. Removing the need for that layer leaves you in the coding zone. Once you have to leave for translating it becomes an expensive process for your brain to recreate the verbal / non verbal environments (or takes too much energy to hold both plus the translation path).

I have a theory that burnout is more common when you keep shifting mental states. Developers who have a phone that keeps ringing throughout the day (or slack messages or urgent emails) are burned out at the end of the day more often than those allowed to be in one state.

iceburgcrm··on Launch HN: Twenty.com (YC S23) – Open-source CRM
As someone who recently built an open source crm (iceburg.ca - Laravel / Vue) I think your choice of license is very limiting. Limiting how the crm can be used will limit the number of users and handicap yourself. Focus on a great crm first and don't worry about others copying you and providing a saas solution better than yours. The more people using your crm is more important than preventing others from making money.

I debated whether to use your license because other crms like SuiteCRM are. I quickly discovered getting others interested enough to host their own saas platforms using my crm framework means more user interest in your crm. The hardest part is getting users to try your crm. That's what you want, not to try to capture imagined lost profit on saas hosting. Then with scale you can create a marketplace of addons and widgets that can capture the real profit center

The combination of Laravel / vue / tailwinds is so powerful. In some ways I hope others don't catch on or I'll lose my advantage but I feel guilty when I watch others struggle in other ecosystems with problems that have been solved.

iceburgcrm··on Ask HN: With recent layoffs, how would you advise new grads entering the market?
As a 20 year vet and someone who entered the market during the first crash in 2001. Apply everywhere, give a little extra in interviews and be prepared to work in a language you didn't expect.

To get my first position involved applying everywhere no matter the skillset asked. When I finally landed an interview we had to create an application. I created an application an hour after the interview was complete emailed it over and that sold me. They didn't believe I did this myself so quickly I had to provide some of my db scripts. The other candidates were stronger on paper (finished a 4 year computer science degree) but none could finish or finish as completely as I did.

It turned a little rough. One of the other candidates came in for lunch a week after I was hired. The founder and this person became friends during the interview process. She literally brokedown and cried that day because she wanted the job so badly. I'm surprised they didn't hire her just based on culture fit but this was a nonprofit with one 6 month contract available and tons of challenging problems to tackle.

My advice is to grind it out and pry that first job out however you can.

iceburgcrm··on Ask HN: What are you working on this year?
It's a common misspelling in Canada which allowed me pickup the domain name. I didn't realize it when I purchased the name many years ago. When I was trying out a few domain names in google this name is the one name that didn't seem to exist as a crm.
iceburgcrm··on Ask HN: What are you working on this year?
I'll continue working on my open source crm iceburg.ca I just added an admin builder, image/video fields and a workflow feature. We'll see what the next year brings.
iceburgcrm··on Show HN: Iceburg CRM – Open-Source Meta Driven CRM Using Vue3 / Laravel
Some of the other unique items.

When exporting related fields (which are represented as an id that links to another module's value) the value is subbed in. When importing the opposite happens where the value is converted back to an id if possible.

Convertable modules where you define target modules where same name fields convert. Handy for converting leads to contacts, etc

iceburgcrm··on Show HN: Iceburg CRM – Open-Source Meta Driven CRM Using Vue3 / Laravel
This is a meta driven CRM which basically means you can define modules, fields, subpanels, etc and generate a crm from that data. It was partly inspired by SugarCRM and other CRMs I have worked on over the years.

I've been working on php based CRMs for 10 years and I thought it was time I created my version of a CRM. At first I want to built a typical business CRM but also a personal CRM. Wouldn't it be cool to be able to build niche crms like a stamp collecting CRM or a social CRM. So I build the CRM in a way where it can become any crm.

The big feature that separates this CRM from other CRMs is how I handle relationships. Instead of having fields withing tables that link modules together with pivot tables and between modules I went with a different strategy where I have a relationship record that holds the relationship for each record. This allows me to create relationships with unlimited number of unrelated modules. And these can be reused in different subpanels.

This is useful for subpanels and removing unnecessary fields from primary module tables. For example: account / contacts might be a subpanel and another subpanel might be contract signing which would hold the: account / contacts / user / city / state / country information. Normally the contracts module would need to contain those specific (contract signing) fields Those fields do not need to exist at that level and can live in the relationship structure.

We still have traditional relationships like related fields where a field in one module would represent a value from another module.

I spent the last 5 months working on this project in my off hours. I've tried to do something each day and that helped keep the project moving along.

Many features planned like automation and admin tools for changing the structure of the crm from the dashboard I had to cut out of this version.

Give it a try.

iceburgcrm··on Ask HN: Is it just me?
In time you will realize there is no correctly just different ways with different tradeoffs.
iceburgcrm··on Ask HN: Why did phpBB forums go out of fashion?
Yes with both of those. Running a BBS was extremely personal. Someone would call your house and use your computer. You could watch them using the site and every site had a chat with the SysOp button so many visits became conversations. Unbeatable.

Forums were great to run and get many people at once on the same forum at the same felt exciting.

Getting people to visit your site is still exciting
