icar··on Iran's Ayatollah Ali Khamenei is killed in Israeli strike, ending 36-year rule
In 1953, Iran was a secular and democratic country. They had elected a prime minister who decided to nationalize the oil industry. The US didn't like this and overthrew him. They imposed a brutal monarchical dictatorship. Popular discontent led to the 1979 Islamic Revolution. The ayatollahs, to a large extent, existed because of US interference.

The same is true for all the instability in the Middle East, entirely manufactured by the West.

Action-reaction, cause-effect: You never know how a story will end. And after the 1979 revolution, the CIA and British MI6 provided the ayatollahs with lists of communists to exterminate, which they did. Imperialism always prefers to deal with theocracies rather than communists. https://www.declassifieduk.org/how-britain-helped-irans-isla...

icar··on Blue light filters don't work – controlling total luminance is a better bet
I actually get head ache after a long session in front of my computer, but putting anti blue light glasses it goes away or never happens.
icar··on Show HN: Micasa – track your house from the terminal
Pretty cool

mise use -g github:cpcloud/micasa

and just start typing. I wish it had metric units and was translated, though!

icar··on Lennart Poettering, Christian Brauner founded a new company
First thing that comes to mind is anti cheat software. Would that be something solved if these objectives are achieved?
icar··on cURL removes bug bounties
> I've since learned that anything heavily regulated like hospitals and banks will have security procedures catering to compliance, not actual security.

I personally came to that conclusion thanks to the GrapheneOS situation regarding device attestation. Insecure devices get full features from some apps because they are certified, although they cite security, while GrapheneOS get half featured apps because it's "insecure" (read, doesn't have the Google certification, but are actually the most secure devices you can get, worldwide)

icar··on The Overcomplexity of the Shadcn Radio Button
Thanks, I did not know this existed and I find it awesome. How was the experience using it? I wonder if it's well maintained or if it has any annoying quirks.
icar··on Show HN: Pdfwithlove – PDF tools that run 100% locally (no uploads, no back end)
Where I live, pretty much everyone uses iLovePdf: https://www.ilovepdf.com/

They have existed for years, way before LLMs ;)

icar··on Ask HN: Share your personal website
https://diccionari.icarns.xyz Probably not the best thing for an American audience. Mallorquí [0] for Catalan people.

icar··on Text-based web browsers
> When viewing a web page in a text-based browser, you essentially get plain HTML, no CSS, no JS. There is some “styling”, a result of the elements’ semantics, but don’t expect anything fancy, we are down to colors, indentation, and centered text.

Reminds me of Gemini protocol. https://gemini.circumlunar.space/

You can also do them in Gitlab.
icar··on Rust's Block Pattern
In Rust everything is an expression, yes.

Faster prototypes? The whole app feels like a constant prototype. There are numerous bugs that never get fixed, and if they do, new ones appear.
icar··on What they don't tell you about maintaining an open source project
Cool project, gave it a star and bookmarked it.
icar··on PHP 8.5
Do people have any recommendations for modern PHP tutorials and learning sources?
icar··on Ditch your mutex, you deserve better
I would've enjoyed if the solution was proposed in Go as well.
icar··on Meta replaces WhatsApp for Windows with web wrapper
I wish they used an SDK and published that, so we could build better clients.
icar··on Meta replaces WhatsApp for Windows with web wrapper
To be fair, the resolution and bitrate were worse, and it wasn't end to end encrypted. I agree, though, that we've regressed.
icar··on iPhone Pocket
I would prefer if we flipped it, "Pocket iPhone", and got an iPhone that fit in a normal pocket.
icar··on App Store web has exposed all its source code
Apple Music web is written in Svelte as well. At least last time I checked.
icar··on Uv is the best thing to happen to the Python ecosystem in a decade
This seems to pretty much cover the same use cases as Mise. Is that true?
icar··on The Swift SDK for Android
I want to know this as well. My only interaction with a Kotlin Multiplatform app is Jetbrains Toolbox, and it's slow to start, has a lot of input lag and overall feels sluggish.
icar··on The Swift SDK for Android
At Proton they use Rust for shared logic (their claim is more than 80% of the codebase iirc), and platform specifics for the rest.

Is this en Electron app or what tech stack did you use to build it?
icar··on If you are reading this obituary, it looks like I'm dead
The same reason some political posts end up in HN. Nothing to do with tech, nor startups, nor anything related to them. This page is just a curated American news outlet, with a decent comment section.

Edit: I'll obviously get downvoted for this, but that's my point of view. I'm from Europe.

icar··on Cloudflare is sponsoring Ladybird and Omarchy
I'm well into the Linux world and have been for years. I've never heard of Omarchy. Do they also sponsor the same way projects that are the basis of Arch Linux, for example? I'm thinking about pacman, infra, etc.
