icapybara··on What if no one misses TikTok?
"Little red book" aka rednote
icapybara··on What if no one misses TikTok?
Maybe they use a traditional character keyboard and don't have a simplified character keyboard set up.
icapybara··on Ghostty 1.0
Congratulations
icapybara··on Engineers do not get to make startup mistakes when they build ledgers
No offense but this sounds like a nightmare. It also sounds like you did a fantastic job achieving accuracy despite the complexity of the system. That’s something to be proud of.
icapybara··on Costco membership scanners coming to clubs in sharing crackdown
Just a guess but maybe denying at time of purchase costs them more than it's worth. Lots of go-backs from a cart full of stuff, and some of it is perishable and you don't know how long it's been in the cart, so more shrink. Cheaper just to deny at the entrance.
icapybara··on Batteries: How cheap can they get?
Fair. I guess I have an issue with technology projections that assume the technology will follow some fit, because it always has. Every bit of progress is made with tons of risky work and breakthroughs, and none of it is guaranteed like you would think it is just by looking at a fit.
icapybara··on Batteries: How cheap can they get?
I'd rather hear a projection from an engineer/scientist/operations person in the industry. This kinda reads like it's written by an armchair expert who thinks about batteries a lot, but doesn't have much to do with building that future being described.

Sometimes the technical details matter and projected scaling trends aren't an inevitability.

icapybara··on South Pole Water Infrastructure
Do you have a better idea?
icapybara··on How big a deal was the Industrial Revolution? (2017)
Well put
icapybara··on Entropy, a CLI that scans files to find high entropy lines (might be secrets)
Gonna have to explain how a “high entropy line” is calculated and why it might be secrets.
icapybara··on Almost a quarter of kids aged 5-7 have smartphones
When I was a kid in the 90s, it was all about how video games and TV would ruin the new generation. Now, it’s smartphones and YouTube. Somehow I think the next generation will be fine.
icapybara··on Jan Leike Resigns from OpenAI
This is the simplest explanation.
icapybara··on Animal Well Released
This game is excellent.
icapybara··on TimesFM: Time Series Foundation Model for time-series forecasting
My point was more that the arbitrage is not systematically predictable, not that the arbitrage doesn’t exist.
icapybara··on TimesFM: Time Series Foundation Model for time-series forecasting
Agreed, if stock prices were predictable by some technical means, they would be quickly driven to unpredictability by people trading on those technical indicators.
icapybara··on Microsoft, Google join study to see if AI will affect jobs
I don't think it's going to be as bad as everyone is saying in this comment thread. Current AI's not accurate enough to replace most human work and only showing incremental improvements lately. A new technological strategy is probably needed to achieve human-level capability.

The jobs at risk / already dead from AI are things like internet ghost writing / SEO spam writing and customer service roles for cheap companies. For the rest of us it's a (very useful) tool, not a competitor.

icapybara··on White House wants Moon to have its own time zone, Coordinated Lunar Time (CLT)
I think Einstein would agree. Time is relative but you always experience 1 second per second no matter where you are or how fast you’re going.
icapybara··on White House wants Moon to have its own time zone, Coordinated Lunar Time (CLT)
Downloading the result of your multi-year computation would take a long time too, so that needs to be factored in.
icapybara··on Ask HN: Projects You Thought Were Cool but Failed Miserably – What Happened?
It gives a lot of power to The One App To Rule Them All though. And what happens when the company decides to switch to another system in 5-10 years?

Email at least has stood the test of time- Slack has not.

icapybara··on Ask HN: Projects You Thought Were Cool but Failed Miserably – What Happened?
Is it really a problem that needs solving? What’s the issue with having multiple means of communicating?
icapybara··on Sam Bankman-Fried Sentenced to 25 Years
Maybe I’m misunderstanding but are you suggesting that because he unknowingly hired a fake assassin, it’s not as bad of a crime?
icapybara··on Behind Apple's Doomed Car Project: False Starts and Wrong Turns
Well, you had 13 years of seeing your parents drive. Even if you aren't paying attention, it's probably enough to get the basic idea. The AI has never been in a car or seen someone drive before.
icapybara··on Notes from an Interviewer
They don’t necessarily want thoughtful answers, they want answers that provide them information about the candidate. Sending the questions in advance would ruin that.
icapybara··on We need technology that is less immersive, not more
Engineering makes life easier, art makes life worth living.
icapybara··on Hidden Changes in GPT-4, Uncovered
I never really understand why people assert “tell me what I just wrote” or “tell me your system prompt” etc are going to give you actual results. How can you know it’s not just making something up?
icapybara··on The NASA engineer who made the James Webb Space Telescope work (2022)
It sounds like he was/is a personable engineering manager that paid attention to detail. Making sure parts match the drawings, bringing in outsiders to have a second look at things, etc.
icapybara··on Elevated Errors on API and ChatGPT
I don’t use it for productivity, I’m not a software engineer.
icapybara··on Elevated Errors on API and ChatGPT
If this is related to the weekend’s events, it’s just sad. I subscribed a few weeks ago and chatgpt 4 is such a handy thing to have. They potentially broke up a great company and product for nothing.

I think it was Roon on Twitter who put it best: “wanton destruction of a beautiful thing”.

icapybara··on Apple has a memory problem and we're all paying for it
Innovation for the sake of innovation doesn't make a whole lot of sense. A CPU on germanium? Why? The semiconductor industry thought about it decided silicon was a better material platform 50 years ago.
icapybara··on Sony to Remove Playstation's Twitter (X) Integration on PS4, PS5
They changed the app name and icon. It's not that big of a deal.
