Thanks so much.

ibsathish··on Gmail - Find Emails That Never Got a Reply
Good one, as long as marketers and recruiters don't use.
ibsathish··on Origami - Design prototyping with Quartz Composer
Thanks for sharing.
ibsathish··on After a year of struggling, my startup is now open source
Great work! Kudos for the perseverance.
ibsathish··on Tell HN: How we bootstrapped to the #1 rated mattress on Amazon.com
Awesome. Very heart-warming to learn your story of success. Shows real businesses which solves a definite pain point (that has deep conviction) can be built without external capital.

All the best for your future.

ibsathish··on Show HN: Fiddlewax Interactive Lessons
Yes agree! But, I would suggest you to keep an eye on this.

Otherwise, this is a great one for music lovers lost in the tech world. Thanks for this.

ibsathish··on Show HN: Fiddlewax Interactive Lessons
Looks cool.

I found one issue though. I had signed up with just my email and captcha and when I attempt to login on a different browser, it again sends an email with the activation link. It's a bold attempt, but I would rather remember my Password than typing in the captcha and waiting for the activation mail to come, every single time.

Thanks.

ibsathish··on The key word in “Data Science” is not Data, it is Science
Data gives a perception only when there is a problem to solve and you need support from the data. Problem solving is more about the knowledge in the vertical, the approach to the problem and your capability to think from multiple angles, which does not have to do about science.

Good article, nevertheless.

ibsathish··on The Best Books I Read in 2013
Need not have to label the Fiction genre as a non-educative one. Numerous amount of fiction books teach about the world, the cultures and provokes self-introspection.

Non-fiction, agreed. Especially Biographies of successful people who made it from the scratch after a lot of struggling, like Mr. Gates himself.

ibsathish··on Could A Tech Giant Build A Better Health Exchange? Maybe Not
Give it to a dying start-up. They'll certainly pull it off with cutting edge technology & tools with great eye for UX, which usually giants fail to do.

This will give them a runway till take-off.

ibsathish··on Powerchair: A dad hacks a wheelchair for his disabled 2-year-old son
Epitome of Father-Child relationship. Moved to tears. Thanks for sharing.
ibsathish··on I Tried to See Where My T-Shirt Was Made
Almost 90% of the sports jerseys are produced from Southern part of India where the situations and characters mentioned in the article are still alive.

Multinational garment companies like Adidas, Nike, Puma etc. should have stricter vigilance towards exploitation of employees. Young girls are prone towards exploitation and they are willing to undergo this as they are desperate for money.

And, blame parents too!

ibsathish··on What I’ve learned in 5 years of running a SaaS
"Never promise dates for a feature launch" - Gem of a point.
ibsathish··on Ask HN: Groups to help individuals start businesses around their skill sets
Pretty much every Business Accelerator does this. They help you handhold in setting up the business & other formalities associated with this for a certain period of time and you learn in the process to manage it all yourselves.

Having an idea which is workable on and could well translate into a business is in itself a 'startup idea'.

A start-up idea does not have a different definition, IMHO.

ibsathish··on Work can Wait
Absolutely agree. 8 hours a day of intense work produces more than 18 hours of sloppy work and just boasting about it.

37Signals seems to follow a lot of these best practices.

ibsathish··on Carlsen wins game 9, only needs 1 draw in 3 remaining games
Clearly shows a paradigm shift with the new generation taking over. Anand is around 44 years now and it's quite obvious that his mental reflexes would have slowed down while Carlsen is just half his age.

Welcome Magnus, you are a prodigy. A real one.

ibsathish··on MediaCrush – A website for serving media super fast
Awesome initiative. I sincerely hope this triggers an avalanche for more to follow for the sheer betterment of the hacker community worldwide.

Thanks.

ibsathish··on Hack of Cupid Media dating website exposes 42 million plaintext passwords
Still in web 0.0 storing passwords in plain text? Awful.
ibsathish··on Parsing Microsoft’s Massive 42% Gain In 2013
True. TC article does not shed any light on this. But, the fact the MSFT failed to see the future in the last decade and becoming complacent about what they had made to the reversal of fortunes. They missed to realize mobile & cloud were multi-billion dollar opportunities. When they tried to make adjustments, it was too late.

Nevertheless, the news of the moving of the man on top gave some cheers to the wall street to go bang it and despite the fact they did not make any noteworthy product in the year in review, the stocks went up 42%.

It deserves a discussion.

ibsathish··on Wireless Attacks With Python: Part One - the "Dnspwn Attack"
Good One. Thanks.
ibsathish··on List of Countries by Incarceration Rate
Certainly looks like a biased list. Look at the bottom of the list and most of them are from Africa where you'd know the crime rates are high. May be, they are not 'punishable offenses' or they get let-off easily.
ibsathish··on Sweden closes four prisons as number of inmates plummets
Totally agree and buy your points. But the point of downsizing the number of jails is what concerns me. Forget crimes in a larger scale or others like homicide, but minor crimes which are still punishable offenses would be in the rise as more and more the mankind evolves, crimes in any country would also evolve.

Obviously, so does the legal system but people are smart enough to find loopholes and find a way to do.

ibsathish··on Yelp Co-Founder: 'No amount of money will get us to manipulate reviews'
Good One & hope it stays true. Hotel owners have started hating Tripadvisor precisely for the very reason of manipulative reviews and hate posts.

Yet, in a large crowdsourced model, you really cannot control such things from competitors, paid agents etc. A challenge to be solved.

ibsathish··on Page not found
This is a deliberate act by Richard Branson after losing the bet. In fact, he was tweeting about this for sometime till he pulled the act out.

ibsathish··on Running an English speaking company in Europe
Kudos to Teambox for getting bigger and growing. Smart move is to hire a US CEO for raising funds & building a sales team out there.

With all due respect to Teambox, Getting to the US Market alone will not be considered international. Every market has its own set of rules and changing dynamics and present a different set of challenges.

This perception has to change, somehow.

ibsathish··on Sweden closes four prisons as number of inmates plummets
This is a pure political gimmick to project their country as one of the safest/crime-free countries. As many have said here, Police is run by the Government and they have the right to manipulate the data.

As a general statistic, if you google it, you'll know the crime rate has been increasing in the last few years. They either fell into dumb ears or they make up by letting the criminals out.

What's the point?

ibsathish··on Facebook Publications
This looks like an intelligent initiative from Facebook and proves it is well on its way towards transparency and would love to see a lot more of papers/publications coming up about their tech. This would largely benefit the academia.

In my view, I love Microsoft Research.
