iaskwhy··on MIT economist believes U.S. is shifting to be more similar to developing nations
I wasn't aware of the original meaning. From Wikipedia[0]: "The term "Third World" arose during the Cold War to define countries that remained non-aligned with either NATO or the Communist Bloc. The United States, Canada, Japan, South Korea, Western European nations and their allies represented the First World, while the Soviet Union, China, Cuba, and their allies represented the Second World. This terminology provided a way of broadly categorizing the nations of the Earth into three groups based on political and economic divisions."

Something related, the Castle House in London[0]. Didn't confirm but I believe it didn't work in the end.

iaskwhy··on Accidentally Stopping a Global Cyber Attack
There's probably a reason why we don't start killing hostages in an hostage situation.
iaskwhy··on Unmanned U.S. Air Force space plane lands after secret, two-year mission
Adding to this: all war is utterly terrifying. People like to pretend it's not but it is. It's not "only" soldiers being killed in all crazy ways but other people being killed, raped, tortured, etc. Babies included like when the Japanese would throw them in the air and let them fall on their katanas. That's reason enough to avoid war.
iaskwhy··on US considers cabin laptop ban on flights from UK airports
My girlfriend just went through an airline training course and, yes, they can stop electrical fires, like batteries, on-board. On a surprising note, they might be even able to handle bombs if these are detected before an explosion. They have procedures for most dangerous stuff, had no idea.
iaskwhy··on Canada is North America’s up-and-coming startup center
If this is anything like Brexit affecting London, I don't see lots of people leaving, I don't even notice any difference in my workplace, but I know someone living the UK every month to the point we're not even one year since the referendum and half my friends already left, one by one.

So, point is, you might not see a sudden movement but it might still be there.

iaskwhy··on UK Prime Minister Theresa May announces intention to hold general election
My quick (and probably off) analysis: Tories found this timing to be the best one to call an election based on the disarray of UKIP and Labour. Tories are again playing politics, they want to get a good slice of UKIP vote and keep Labour at the current level at best. I believe the only real alternative to another May government is for Lib Dems, Labour, Green, to make a coalition against this Tory initiative. Otherwise, should be an easy win for May.
iaskwhy··on UK Prime Minister Theresa May announces intention to hold general election
Vote swapping is possible, there was at least a major platform for the last General Election and it got quite popular. Consider reading about it.

A quick Google search found this but I'm sure there's much more than that: http://voteswap.org/

iaskwhy··on The Gig Economy Celebrates Working To Excess
Can you guys expand on this? It's something I'm usually interested in but being raised in a Roman Catholic country doesn't make it obvious what differences might exist between Calvinism and Protestantism.
iaskwhy··on Former Norway PM held at Washington airport over 2014 visit to Iran
Someone posted this, I guess that's how: https://papersplease.org/wp/2013/09/29/how-the-nsa-obtains-a...
iaskwhy··on Former Norway PM held at Washington airport over 2014 visit to Iran
I had a conversation about this yesterday and I assumed USA keeps a database of your entries into other countries thus ending this new passport hack. Can anyone confirm this?

iaskwhy··on Sergey Brin joins protest against immigration order at SFO
I agree with your points but "The collateral damage from the bombings, added up over a decade, has probably been hundreds of innocent civilians' lives" is not really true. One single drone strike during Bush era killed almost 100 children in a school. There's been much more than 1000 killed civilians and probably 10x that injured (and, as you can imagine, injuries from drone strikes are not usually soft ones).

Drone strikes stats can be seen at https://www.thebureauinvestigates.com/category/projects/dron...

iaskwhy··on Mac sales declined nearly 10% last year as Lenovo, Dell and others gained ground
Just a reminder: the original Macbook Air was introduced 9 years ago for US$1799, a very premium price point for a, at the time, really weak machine. Give it time!
iaskwhy··on Theresa May: UK must leave European single market
While I agree with what you said, I believe the UK never acted as a heavier country during all these years. I understand why if the reason is purely political and based on winning elections but winning in the short terms led us to where we are now. I'm sure Cameron got himself a nice surprise.
iaskwhy··on Theresa May: UK must leave European single market
Any examples of monetary policies imposed by the ECB on the BoE? Given the different currency, I'm curious about it.
iaskwhy··on The Number of Older Student Loan Borrowers Is Rising
What happens if you take a loan to study but can't pay it back? I'm thinking it makes it impossible to eventually get any other credit like a mortgage?
iaskwhy··on China has wealth of data on what individuals are doing at a micro level
Isn't that good though? It allows competitors to appear with that advantage of having better privacy. I mean, the problem is not the way iOS handles it, it's the way app developers abuse their permissions.

Brilliant, thanks!
iaskwhy··on What .NET Developers ought to know to start in 2017
A short summary would be: .NET Framework allows you to build Windows apps (desktop) and webapps; .NET Core allows you to build cross platform webapps (so, no desktop apps).

The reason is .NET Core doesn't ship with any cross platform desktop graphical class library unlike .NET Framework (ships with at least 3: Windows Forms, Windows Presentation Foundation and Universal Windows Platform).

Sometimes I'd like that for new gadgets' comparison, say, a new iPhone or Android phone compared to previous iterations, a visual comparison, side by side or on top.
iaskwhy··on Venture capital is going to murder Medium
Sorry for what might be a stupid question but I haven't used Medium and last used Tumblr a few years ago: how do you know how many readers you have? Do these platforms offer stats or is it based on Google Analytics or user comments?

It's not hard to believe Medium having more traffic than Tumblr, just wanted to understand how people measure this.

iaskwhy··on How a Zara Coat Went from Design to Fifth Avenue in 25 Days
My so returns around 50% of the them. I don't really get it, never bought clothes online, I don't think I ever will...
iaskwhy··on Chernobyl’s Hot Mess, “the Elephant’s Foot”, Is Still Lethal (2013)
For 100 years only. In 2116 we might need a new shelter on top of this?
iaskwhy··on Parkinson’s disease ‘may start in gut’
Adding to this, dementia might be a "side" effect of the medication for the muscles' rigidity. It's hard to explain but eventually there comes a time when you need to opt between not being able to move or take the medication and start having more and more frequent surreal visions.

My grandfather survived a few cancer appearances but during the last surgery to remove some cancer lumps he woke up as a completely new person. It seems the anesthesia triggered the first signs of Parkinson's and dementia exactly at the same time. He was pretty "normal" before the surgery but after it he couldn't walk and thought the hospital staff attacked him with dogs during the night. Fortunately (?) he didn't last long after that day but still had time to be kicked off from his home by my grandmother who couldn't handle the dementia.

Sorry for the rant, I'm obviously not over it, will never be. Dementia is the worst thing I've ever witnessed.

iaskwhy··on Confessions of an Instagram Influencer
The purpose is not being marketed, is having sex. You market yourself so you can have better sex. At least that's what some people say, like when they claim Zuckerberg started The Facebook so people could get easily laid.

I've also had interesting conversations saying the purpose is not sex but power. We do stuff the way we do because that might get us more power.

Sociology is really interesting.

iaskwhy··on The Frozen Banana Republic (2014)
I remember seeing (and walking around) what looked like a tomato farm nearby Gamla Laugin (the Secret Lagoon) [0]. I was really surprised by the completely stocked supermarkets everywhere with good looking vegetables and fruits. I felt pretty ignorant by this even though I prepared my two weeks driving around Iceland for months. Most incredible thing I've ever seen, obviously.

By the way, if anyone's in for a cheaper alternative around Europe, try visiting the Azores Islands. I used to think of it as unbelievably beautiful but then Iceland happened.

iaskwhy··on The Frozen Banana Republic (2014)
Isn't this a virtual thing? I don't know anything about this but I'd say most energy in Norway's houses is indeed produced via renewables (I mean the actual energy, say, the electrons being transported) and then a virtual transaction is handled by interested parties (say other countries' governments). For example, Germany could pay Norway x for an exchange of a percentage of renewables and nuclear, for stats and regulatory purposes, but the actual energy being consumed by Germans would still be produced by nuclear. Is this correct in any way?
iaskwhy··on iPhone update leaves users furious due to battery drain issue
This has been my experience in two of their stores in London. One of them even decided not to cover a defective product for free 1.5y after I've bought it in an EU country which gave me 2y warranty. I had to fly to that country to have it immediately replaced, for free. This one was really awkward since they have it on the system, they know when and where I bought it and under which terms and still decided not to help me. In my experience it's by far the worst customer support I ever had.
iaskwhy··on Is Nuclear Power Vital to Hitting CO2 Emissions Targets?
One thing I almost never see discussed is how expensive it gets when you have to keep building nuclear power plants due to decommissioning. Most nuclear power plants in use nowadays seem to have a 30 years life expectancy, new ones get up to 60. It just seems hugely expensive.
