iask··on Portions of the brain fall asleep and wake back up all the time
Seems to me that the brain is conservative on energy consumption here. The same I apply to my hobby electronic circuitry design, i.e. turn off sensory areas when not in use and back on as needed.
iask··on Design and Implementation of a Win32 Text Editor (2005)
I used itextsharp library to convert the PDF files to text and then go from there. Once you have the file in text format you can then determine how to parse - that would be the structure you will see all the time for that document. In my case, each document differ by vendors, hence different parsers. That's the gist of it.
iask··on A cloud images processing platform
Thanks! I don't see an API sample showing the removal of the scanner grey area. The auto cropping may work, but not all the images are the same size. I reached out to them and awaiting response.
iask··on A cloud images processing platform
I just started working on a project where I have to take scanned images, auto crop to remove the scanner grey area, polish and resize, then upload to web.

This service would be ideal if it had auto crop feature. Hopefully soon :)

In the meantime I have to find a solution. Any advice on libraries to look at?

iask··on Design and Implementation of a Win32 Text Editor (2005)
I always enjoy reading articles like this. I am a .Net developer and recently did an application for parsing some of our B2B PDF documents (different vendors, different document structures) and loading the data into a backend db.

It was an interesting project. Text parsing becomes so simple once you have a logic. And there are so many things to watch out for e.g. Different versions of PDF are structured differently, some vendors had HTML documents, flat text, some totally not in any structure.

Thanks for sharing!

iask··on Cyber Attackers Crash Muni Computer System Across SF
Win2k...not surprised. I often see this. If it ain't broken why fix it. O'boy, tomorrow is cyber Monday.
iask··on Why the MacBook Pro Is Limited to 16GB of RAM
I have a 17" MacBook Pro from 2010 8gb ram. I boot in Windows 7, with 15 tabs open in FF and 3 instances of Visual Studio 2012 open as well as multiple Notepad++, Excel and runs smoothly. I really love the 17" screen.
iask··on Nest's economics don't work. Why IoT devices should be sold as services
Those who can afford a Nest can also dump it if they choose not to pay. I love my Nest. Bought it one month after the launched. Would I pay $10.00 a month just to reulate my heat only? Hell no! There are so many new alternatives in this space - not as intelligent or sexy looking though. Maybe I build my own. The algorithm is not hard to implement. I am just lazy.

Still love my Nest. Sexy, smart, set-and-forget. But we only mingle in the winter.

iask··on How Hackers Broke into John Podesta and Colin Powell’s Gmail Accounts
"The phishing email that Podesta received on March 19 contained a URL, created with the popular Bitly shortening service, pointing to a longer URL that, to an untrained eye, looked like a Google link."

Ha....looked at the link and can conclude...long enough to bypass the average attention span ;)

iask··on Analyzing the Patterns of Numbers in 10M Passwords (2015)
DataGenetics have really cool and interesting articles. I've been following them for a couple of years now...been asking for a "Bin and Order Packin" post.
iask··on Heavy SSD Writes from Firefox
Well I must say, I certainly changed my settings to 45 minutes and OMG! fans haven't spin up loudly since. Wow!
iask··on I will travel to NewYork. What Can I do as a Programmer?
fuhgeddaboudit, Brooklyn.
iask··on Heavy SSD Writes from Firefox
So Firefox is also expensive to run in terms of energy consumption. No wonder the fans on my MacBook Pro always sound like a jet engine whenever I have several tabs open. Seriously!

Disclaimer: I dual boot (camp) windows 7 on my mac.

iask··on Hacker Shows Us How to Unlock a Laptop Using an NSA Tool [video]
Cool. I want that for Christmas.
iask··on Ask HN: Anonymous person sent proof of SSH access to our production server
Thank the person. It wouldn't hurt to ask their suggestion. Enlist an expert on your team. Not every software developer is a system administrator and not every manager is an expert developer. YouTube videos doesn't make one an expert after a few hours.

I am certain you will receive very good advice here in the comments.

Technically speaking - you should give a little more data on your setup. A high level view would suffice. That way folks here can narrow their suggestions down.

iask··on Indian hacker discovers Vine's source code Twitter pays him $10,080
Is there a reason why "Indian" was added to the headline? I don't think color makes a hacker any different...does it?
iask··on Tesla confirms “Autopilot” crash in Montana
IMHO, autopilot means "vehicle drives by itself without my involvement"...it's not autopilot if my hands have to be on the wheel. It seems that this technology is Cruise Control v2.

Having the hands on the wheel only gives the car manufacturers leverage in denying there is any problem on their end.

iask··on Ebay posts every character a user types into the password box
After reading the public post and these comments, do you think they (eBay) will give a better explanation...or better, an explanation...as to why they do this? Passwords are becoming difficult to maintain, even with a password manager. They should've, at least, obfuscate it in some way.
iask··on Announcing .NET Core 1.0
Are you referring to the 1% on wall street? ;)
iask··on CHIP $9 Computer
Interesting. I went to Microcenter once and got a tablet for $20 bucks. Nothing fancy though...had Jellybean installed. I will definitely check them out for the pi zero...hope I am not too late to the party.
iask··on CHIP $9 Computer
I think their warehouse and office is in the same place.
iask··on CHIP $9 Computer
Well, I just bought the elusive pi zero, as a kit...because that's the only way I can get it, from adafruit a few days ago...around $36 with shipping. The actual shipping was $8.50 and I am just 5 miles from their office.
iask··on Uber Turns to Saudi Arabia for $3.5B Cash Infusion
Funny...lol. I flew past this post and then suddenly started laughing.
iask··on Uber Turns to Saudi Arabia for $3.5B Cash Infusion
Uber is a fad...and will soon be be moved to the back seat...unless it's too late. One poster might be on to something "...they are trying to get enough money to sustain the subsidies until they kill all existing competition"...62bn for a ride-hailing company?
iask··on Foxconn replaces '60,000 factory workers with robots'
Exactly. Skilled labor and an aged population doesn't help much. What happens to the worker over 50...or even 40 with a family to privide for...there isn't much time to acquire new skills. It's easier said when you don't have a family to provide for or responsibilities. There should be a transition period where people are allowed time to obtain new skills instead of being dropped...and in some cases, left to be picked up by local government - job training programs are not cheap.
iask··on Raspberry Pi Zero grows a camera connector
Cunning and small, yet elusive like Bigfoot. I can't seem to find one at a reasonable cost.
iask··on Medical Equipment Crashes During Heart Procedure Because of Antivirus Scan
There are a couple of things here from my POV, first - I would replace the head of their IT and any senior IT staff - who seem to look for the quickest-then-cheap solutions. Dumb ducks who don't spend the extra time understanding the importance of the infrastructure and the software they install. And also replace the service vendor, if they have one.

I've seen this happen time and again, where companies have some 3rd party service vendors who would install AV software on anything they can get their hand on, even a microwave or coffee machine - just to tell the client "my bill is expensive, but you can feel secure, we installed AV". I despise these folks with a passion.

The problem is not Windows. It's a lack of knowledge and understanding. Simple.

For god's sake - it's 2016 - dump the Anti Virus software. I am gonna make t-shirts this summer with this ;)

iask··on ThingieQuery: $19 SQL IDE for Excel
Just an FYI...Exact software offer a similar tool like this to enable power users to query their data. It's not fully loaded as this so you might be up for grabs if the price is right. Why not connect with them after you review your value.
iask··on Xamarin Open-Sourced
I am also curious. Does anyone know of any good apps done with Xamarin?
iask··on MakerBot Is Outsourcing Its Brooklyn Manufacturing Jobs to China
I saw a posh house in Florida a few months ago for $700 a month. The whole house and yard space. 20 minutes from Miami. Weeks later I saw a one for $550 in North Carolina.
