ianwalter··on Sorry everybody, I failed with you
I've heard that the vast majority of those downloads are from CI systems. It would be cool if GitHub could draw anonymous metrics from GitHub Actions and help with this mystery.
ianwalter··on Sorry everybody, I failed with you
I really wish GitHub would invest more in the dependency graph, like allow you to sort by stars at least: https://github.com/josephg/jumprope/network/dependents
ianwalter··on Show HN: An experimental, people-powered search engine
Nice. I am building this too. Looking forward to exploring your vision of it.
ianwalter··on Mighty Makes Google Chrome Faster
Thanks for clarifying. Seems like a lot of companies in this space (at least the ones geared towards gaming) have had to pivot.
ianwalter··on Mighty Makes Google Chrome Faster
Isn't Shadow basically going out of business? Pre-orders aren't estimated to be available until October and I thought I read somewhere that they are selling off pieces of the business.
ianwalter··on Show HN: Jumprope – Terminal-like commands for the Chrome search bar
It does tell you something about them though, like the fact that they are using Next.js, haha.
ianwalter··on All-new iMac features the M1 chip
I bet they won’t call it an iMac Pro but it will be the higher-end iMac.
ianwalter··on Adding is favoured over subtracting in problem solving
I don't think a bike with the pedals removed is equivalent to a balance bike. The height matters right?
ianwalter··on The Deno Company
I agree with you that it would be nice if more of core supported promises, but I think there are probably plenty of examples of them keeping up with the times or charging ahead as well. Top-level await and optional chaining are a couple features that come to mind.
ianwalter··on The Deno Company
Why util.promisify `readFile` when `fs` exports promises?
ianwalter··on Baserow.io – Self-hosted Airtable alternative
This is kind of close to that: https://github.com/awesome-selfhosted/awesome-selfhosted
ianwalter··on RethinkDB: why we failed (2017)
I dont think so because he could have said it plainly since it was generally slow, but instead he implied that the use cases users were trying weren't "real world" use cases that fit within what a database of its class should be able to do. Hes not being totally honest about the performance issues and how much of an impact it had on their failure.
ianwalter··on RethinkDB: why we failed (2017)
> People wanted RethinkDB to be fast on workloads they actually tried, rather than “real world” workloads we suggested

Uh no, It was slow on real world workloads, you just don't want to admit it.

ianwalter··on Starting Sunday, cable companies can no longer ‘rent’ you the router you own
Comcast has done this to me TWICE!
ianwalter··on Starting Sunday, cable companies can no longer ‘rent’ you the router you own
Implying "red tape" is the only barrier to entry is a pretty big oversimplification. Also calling it an "overreach" without any justification for that characterization doesn't help anyone.
ianwalter··on Cloudflare Pages: the best way to build JAMstack websites
Me too. I hate that Vercel and Netlify limit my build to using Node v12 because that is what Amazon supports. Node v14 is LTS now but still no telling when it will be a supported runtime. I refuse to live without optional chaining!
ianwalter··on Heavy is the Head that wears the AirPods Max
> I never really understood the combination of noise cancellation and home use only.

Some of us have kids banging around the house all day.

ianwalter··on FDA Finally Approves an Over-the-Counter Covid-19 Test Kit
This title is misleading since Pixel has been over-the-counter for a while now. This is just saying that they relaxed restrictions on who can order a test (even though the restrictions still seem to be in place on their website when I just tried it).

My company, binx health, is also offering at-home Covid-19 testing: https://app.mybinxhealth.com

ianwalter··on Why is the Google Cloud UI so slow?
http://linear.app and https://clubhouse.io -- I chose Clubhouse for our team a few years ago but Linear is new and is extremely well-made.
ianwalter··on The Tech Stack of a One-Man SaaS
This is probably due to my own ignorance but I haaate helm. I'd be interested to read more about how you use Flux.
ianwalter··on Frontpage: The Good, Bad and Ugly
I was a big AOLPress fan. Please tell me I'm not the only one here. I basically owe my career to that piece of software. That and Geocities of course.
ianwalter··on macOS Big Sur
Yes, which I think helps prove the parent's point!
ianwalter··on macOS Big Sur
Isn't that the response payload and not the request payload?
ianwalter··on Stator: A full-stack boilerplate – releases, deployments, enforced conventions
Oh ok, I guess I forgot nest supports different "platforms", thanks.
ianwalter··on Stator: A full-stack boilerplate – releases, deployments, enforced conventions
Why fastify and nest?
ianwalter··on Maine Becomes First State to Use Ranked-Choice Voting in a Presidential Election
I haven't but seems like a threat to the two-party system and those invested in it.
ianwalter··on Node.js 15.0
I've had a few issues using pnpm with other tools (Renovate, Dependabot, etc.) but at least with Renovate the issues have / are being worked out. I'm happy with pnpm so far and will continue to adopt it incrementally as it's popularity grows.
ianwalter··on Apple says game streaming services violate App Store policies
No because you don't own the machine. I believe it specifically says "owns" but not sure. I also think the guidelines say that it has to be on a personal network -- which I know makes no sense -- but the language was specifically engineered to allow personal remote desktop apps when the Steam Link app was trying to get unbanned from the store.
ianwalter··on Apple says game streaming services violate App Store policies
That's not going to work. Apple has been in that position for so long with Windows that it's built into their DNA. Regulation is probably the only thing that will work.
ianwalter··on Apple says game streaming services violate App Store policies
Not defending it, but in regards to the PS app, the guidelines specifically allow streaming of the users own personal devices.
