ianwalter··on The Token Compression Illusion: Why I'm Skeptical of RTK
Why didn’t you offer any real world usage numbers to illustrate your point? I found this unhelpful.
ianwalter··on Claude Code is now available to Pro plans
How is that a weird reply? I literally started the sentence with "I".
ianwalter··on Claude Code is now available to Pro plans
I would subscribe to Max if they had a coding agent interface on web like OpenAI's Codex, but without a novel implementation like that the monthly plan doesn't make sense since you can just use API, OpenRouter, etc.
ianwalter··on Firefox tab groups are here
Yea crazy how long it took. Zen browser users have been waiting for them to ship this so it can be used in Zen. Of course they announce this the day I switch to Orion.
ianwalter··on No one is disrupting banks – at least not the big ones
Sure, but because of fintech not as many need to get created. Fintech has made it relatively easy for new entrants to work with partner banks through BaaS platforms.
ianwalter··on Merry Christmas Everyone
I guess I never really thought about it, but yea a lot of bangers on that list
ianwalter··on Merry Christmas Everyone
Wow what a great set of movies too
ianwalter··on Continuum – Meet people from all over the world... then kill them
Same. I can’t believe this is still a thing.
ianwalter··on Hired.com Shut Down
This makes me sad because not only did I get my current job through Hired, but I’ve also recruited several great software engineers through the platform.
ianwalter··on The danger of the mediocre success when testing startup hypotheses (2023)
Everything is a series of battles and campaigns. If the overall war is a mediocre success, you still have plenty to learn from if you're digging into those.
ianwalter··on Product Roadmap
As a software engineering leader I can appreciate the huge amount of work it took you all to get here. It may not be super flashy because you had to start from scratch and get to feature parity with existing platforms, but IMHO Bluesky has the best app and I'm excited about all of the stuff you will add in the future. I'm rooting for you!
ianwalter··on Product Roadmap
I think so. Sure, platforms like Threads have the raw numbers and network effects, but Bluesky has an authentic community, a solid team (Dan Abramov from the React team joining was a surprise), and they are making the right product tradeoffs. I can definitely see them “coming out on top” as the spiritual successor to Twitter in a few years.
ianwalter··on The worst possible way to be rejected for a job
Do you have any friends that can go through a mock interview with you? There are also mentorship platforms that offer this as a service. I am biased since I have been on the mentor side of this, but I think they are well worth the money.
ianwalter··on The worst possible way to be rejected for a job
Personally I'd blame HR. It's their job to fully think these things through and make sure they are being executed on in a coherent fashion.
ianwalter··on The worst possible way to be rejected for a job
Just my opinion as a hiring manager, but there is ZERO chance that these calls have potential to change the outcome.
ianwalter··on Designer News is dead
Thanks for writing this. I don't remember why I stopped visiting DN a long time ago, but a reduction in quality content makes sense.
ianwalter··on The Bun Shell
Really cool. How would you use config files from other shells like .zshrc? We use direnv and mise to scope binary versions to project directories and just wondering how stuff like that would work.
ianwalter··on InVision design collaboration services shutdown
Wasn't InVision built on something crazy like ColdFusion?
ianwalter··on Spotify will reduce total headcount by approximately 17%
Yea I understand that, but whats the point of that strategy if users don't want to even subscribe to podcasts in the app because how bad the UI is. It's like they've never used a podcast app before.
ianwalter··on Spotify will reduce total headcount by approximately 17%
Instead of investing in massive podcaster deals, they should have just focused on integrating podcasts into the app in a sane way. I would pay more if it were as good as Pocket Casts, but it's nowhere close.
ianwalter··on A software epiphany
This is actually a great article even though the popups are terrible and I found the first sentence very off-putting.
ianwalter··on We built the fastest CI and it failed
I feel you on that one. There is also Act (https://github.com/nektos/act) and Dagger.io.
ianwalter··on AngelList Talent is now Wellfound.com
Congrats! This is a good move and I'm excited to see the platform become better.
ianwalter··on Ask HN: Replacement for Stack Overflow jobs section?
Surprised no one has mentioned https://hired.com
ianwalter··on Ask HN: for senior positions is it advisable to list side projects on your CV?
I definitely see those side projects positively and I'm hiring for my team. It wouldn't matter to me how senior the role you'd be applying for is. Of course, I am also the sort of developer that works on side projects.
ianwalter··on Ask HN: Is it just me, or is the inbox is the worst place for newsletters?
I'm trying to switch my newsletters over to Feedbin but it's a slow process.
ianwalter··on No Comments, Ever
> If I need to read your comment in order to understand your code, there is something wrong with your code.

This whole post is based on a bad premise. Whether the reader can understand the code is dependent on the reader and not just the code.

ianwalter··on Rethinking Triplebyte
I like this direction and I'm rooting for you now but it's tough when I can't even fill out the Basic Information section because of a bug in which the form won't submit even though there are no errors.
ianwalter··on Rethinking Triplebyte
Because getting some leads with less certainty is better than getting no leads with higher certainty in a tight market? Wasn't this addressed in the post?
ianwalter··on How Universal Control on macOS Monterey Works
Yes! I've tried out way too many keyboards in the last few years and the Magic Keyboard is by far my favorite. I'm not as big of a fan of the trackpad but before this announcement I spent a lot of time trying to figure out how I could use the Magic Keyboard with my Mac Mini.
