ianmf··on Ask HN: How do you privately share pictures and video with family and friends?
All my immediate family have an iPhone. I have a public album for sharing family pictures. It allows for comments and 'likes'.

I have talked to my family about my privacy concerns and that I don't want pictures of my kids on Facebook unless I approve or my kids approve. I think it is important to respect children privacy requests (my son sometimes don't want pictures being shared) but it is a way to share memories with close family members that would enjoy the moment.

ianmf··on A tech antitrust problem no one is talking about: US broadband providers
I am about to move and where I am moving to, only has a sole Residential ISP... Comcast. I seriously considered not moving to that place because of that fact. I have had very bad experiences with Comcast. Parting from Verizon FIOS will be hard.
ianmf··on Tesla raises “full self-driving” price from $8k to $10k
It seems to me that people overlook the benefit FSD brings to people with busy or long commutes. I like being able to relax and only focus on _intervening_ when there is a lot of traffic on my 45 minutes commute from work. I don’t get home fatigue from the driving. Instead, I spend time doing the things I want to do, like play with my kids or work on my projects. To me it is worth the investment.
ianmf··on Sweden Bans Huawei, ZTE from New 5G Infrastructure
I don't think western civilization will put the necessary amount of pressure on the basis of human rights violations. However, they might use this excuse to affect negatively China's economic growth and hinder their IP espionage.
ianmf··on Ask HN: Best site hosting and email solution?
I have my domains via Google Domains, web hosting on Digital Ocean, and email I have a free grand-fathered GSuite. I would switch my email to a different provider but you can't beat GSuite for free (at least for now).
ianmf··on iPhone 12 does not come with power charger or earbuds in the box
A lot will criticize Apple for doing this claiming they are cutting cost (which they are) but I keep finding earbuds and chargers from many of my old devices as I pack my house for moving. I am sure a lot of these accessories end up in the garbage without being used a single time.
ianmf··on Ask HN: Has anyone been fired because they were job hunting?
Depending on what projects you work on, your org might could have installed "monitoring" software on your computer that triggers alerts when you job search. The purpose is to catch insider threat, make sure nobody runs off to the competitor with IP. If you are job searching at competition's website, they may cut you off specific projects, or just "let you go".

I would never job search on company's time or issued hardware, and I wouldn't recommend it.

ianmf··on Never Send Your CV via Gmail
Another less known fact is that gmail blocks zip files/archives that contain executable extensions, scrips, or encrypted filenames. I few months ago I tried sending a document that contained my PII and I was unable to send it because gmail couldn't determine the content inside the archive. This feature that should have a on/off option IMO.

ianmf··on Ask HN: Where do you write?
I am using a self-hosted Wordpress instance, lets encrypt, and cloudflare to proxy requests. A few automation scripts to ensure the apps are updated and IP changes are corrected with google domains. Every now and then I check my site to ensure everything is working as it should.

Granted, it doesn't get much traffic except for 2 post that gets me 5-10 visitors daily. https://ianmf.com

ianmf··on Apple, Amazon, and Common Enemies
If Apple would allow customers bypass "the wall" by side loading apps, developers and companies will tell users to disable some security settings to install app from their website, creating a security issue for their users.
ianmf··on How to start a blog using Hugo
I like to blog to provide an online presence, but blogging for me is not that important. I cannot justify spending time in configuring and troubleshooting static site generators. I like WordPress because you can get it to work within minutes and all I have to worry about is writing content and coming up with ideas. I have a self-hosted WP instance, which conducts regular backups, and uses Let's Encrypt and auto renews monthly which I check on every 2 or 3 months to ensure everything is running correctly.
ianmf··on Why should you trust ProtonMail?
If you are willing to pay for protonmail.com, why not just use GSuite or O365 Business? The content of your emails are not used for marketing and you get more features/products for your money. My threat model is not disgruntle employees searching through my emails, or govt. out to get me.
ianmf··on Facebook auto-generates videos celebrating extremist images
I don’t understand why people react shockingly towards this kind of news. Not all blocking algorithms work flawlessly. Learn from the mistake, fix, done. I don’t understand why the news try to make it sound like FB is promoting or neglecting this kind of incidents.
ianmf··on AT&T says it’ll stop selling location data amid calls for federal investigation
I wouldn’t be surprised if this turns into a feature with a price attached. AT&T location privacy add on. $5.
ianmf··on Leave Gmail in 10 steps
I do this. I use Gsuite but not their email. I changed the MX records of the domain to the other email host.
ianmf··on Ask HN: How to get web development career on track from being homeless?
Please update in a day or two. I am curious as well.
