ianlevesque··on Still no love for WPA3 on the Raspberry Pi 5
They didn’t save anything. The hardware they shipped supports it but Broadcom can’t be bothered to release a driver.
ianlevesque··on High-level emulator for iPhone OS apps
Very interesting. The "why" context seems to be buried in an issue comment https://github.com/hikari-no-yume/touchHLE/issues/181#issuec... and I guess the purpose is to emulate old iOS games, from the early Cambrian explosion of ideas at the start of the App Store. This is also an era I am nostalgic for, with lots of new concepts, art pieces, and indie games, before anyone knew how to sustainably monetize, for better or worse. For example, Distant Shore is definitely a relic from a simpler time! https://johnnybgamer.com/2009/08/13/distant-shore/
ianlevesque··on NASA just sent a software update to a spacecraft 12B miles away
> NASA funding, which peaked during the Apollo program in the 1960s, has dwindled, making it next to impossible to recruit young computer-science majors away from the likes of Google and Facebook.

This problem can be attacked in a couple of ways, one way is to increase compensation sure, but another is to make it possible to have healthcare and housing on the salary they do offer. The chasm between pay and cost of living is huge and growing.

ianlevesque··on The Oracle Java Platform Extension for Visual Studio Code
I think you'd have to be crazy to use a different Java LSP for JetBrains, but it's a useful feature for other languages to be sure.
ianlevesque··on Daily energy expenditure through the human life course
I had a similar trajectory. The transition from one to the other was a long course of antibiotics.
ianlevesque··on How LSP could have been better
Agreed. Even beyond that it would be great for merging & conflict resolution too.
ianlevesque··on Proboscis, pollen, and the rapture of interspecies intimacy

ianlevesque··on Android devices with backdoored firmware found in US schools
> which would allow developers to cause all sorts of unchecked havoc.

This is simply not true. The security boundary is not at that layer. Calling private methods doesn't escape the sandbox.

ianlevesque··on Why did the Motorola 68000 processor family fall out of use in PCs?
> Microsoft's peculiar inability to switch architectures.

More like third party publishers? Windows has been released for many architectures in the past but without bringing the software ecosystem along it never worked out. They presently seem to be trying to correct that, with an x86 emulator included in their ARM version of Windows 11, but don't have the hardware offerings to create demand.

ianlevesque··on Android devices with backdoored firmware found in US schools
You're conflating a whole bunch of issues. iOS enforces the same sandbox on all installed apps, whether they were installed from the App Store, or using a developer or even enterprise distribution certificate. Opening up to competing App Stores, or allowing 'untrusted' sources, doesn't weaken this security posture. You'd still have to grant permissions to said 3rd party apps, and the kind of low level access you're talking about isn't even able to be granted without an exploit. If you have an exploit, then the current requirement to use Xcode to install your exploit code, isn't stopping anyone even today.

Apple's restrictions exist to protect their 30% cut of all software revenue. Any other benevolence you perceive to be there is naive.

ianlevesque··on Classic Mac Video Signals Demystified Designing a Mac-to-VGA Adapter with LM1881
Ha nice. Programming 'Bolo Brains' or whatever they were was a cool challenge at the time.

The hero we really need, nice work.
ianlevesque··on Classic Mac Video Signals Demystified Designing a Mac-to-VGA Adapter with LM1881
My approach would just be to sample one channel, like green, with the ADC and generate the sync signal, avoiding digital processing of the video itself. Just pass it through with any necessary level shifting in analog.

Someone was able to output 1080p(ish) with an RP2040, so yeah, it'd be doable.

ianlevesque··on Press Reviews of the AMD Ryzen 7040 Framework Laptop 13
AMD was who I meant by they. Sibling comment clarifies that it’s only on Pro.
ianlevesque··on Press Reviews of the AMD Ryzen 7040 Framework Laptop 13
And give up that sweet, sweet enterprise market segmentation? I wish they would.
ianlevesque··on Honey, I shrunk the NPM package
It's a fair question. If you're using a zipfile you can random-access the individual files in the zip easily enough. The node_modules folder is famously heavy with thousands of tiny files, so there's likely to be performance wins to be had. Old, less fashionable programming languages, like Java, of course already do all this with .jar files.
ianlevesque··on Type 2 diabetes rates in US youth rose 62% after Covid pandemic began
It's such a strange experience since the pandemic encountering folks like you and some sibling commenters, who, because a few people in their immediate social group, "seem fine", dismiss the outcomes of millions who died, or struggle with Long COVID, or all the accumulating science documenting the post-acute conditions this virus causes. Other viruses cause post-acute complications too, so it's not even new, but for this virus people really need to put it in the box of 'what me worry?' for some reason. Three years ago I would've expected different from the educated and generally cynical/skeptical HN crowd, but no longer I guess.
ianlevesque··on macOS Sonoma is available today
They started with a huge advantage and squandered it with a buggy cloud subscription model and an electron downgrade. Their fate is their own at this point.

I honestly worry Apple will remember NFS exists at some point and delete that too. File Providers is so limiting.
ianlevesque··on iCloud Drive silently deletes your content
iCloud Photos are even worse. A family member had some corruption or misclick (wasn't there) that made their organized photo albums disappear even though the photos were still present. Luckily they have backup software I set them up with backing up their entire library, so I walked them through restoring from the day before. We then watched as iCloud noticed it was an old copy of the library and helpfully re-deleted all their albums. We never managed to fix it. I hate computing and want off of this.
ianlevesque··on Type 2 diabetes rates in US youth rose 62% after Covid pandemic began
I am literally advocating for preventing, or at least reducing, spread in schools in this very comment, and as a parent, have skin in the game. Endemic doesn't mean harmless.
ianlevesque··on Type 2 diabetes rates in US youth rose 62% after Covid pandemic began
Let’s fix this. There’s funding already allocated to improve ventilation in schools. Since the coronavirus is endemic we’re going to be dealing with these increased risks for decades. Why can’t we get this done? Let’s actually save the children for once.
ianlevesque··on Google Analytics Opt-Out Browser Add-On
It looks like they’re taking public heat every time there’s even a minor violation here? This seems to be working as intended to me.
ianlevesque··on Google Analytics Opt-Out Browser Add-On
Not a googler but sometimes the paranoia on this forum is really over the top. Even in the barren privacy wasteland that is the United States you can’t provide a product that is advertised as an opt out mechanism and then make it not do that! Even burying that in the terms of service won’t fly. They would have to just discontinue it.
ianlevesque··on Cache headers could probably be more aggressive
Wasn't that feature already removed?
ianlevesque··on Permazen: a different persistence layer for Java
jOOQ is pretty great, and recently got good Kotlin support. My only complaint is if you use their DSL you lose the SQL syntax highlighting JetBrains IDEs have.
ianlevesque··on First automatic JPEG-XL cloud service
Anyone know the one-liner to losslessly recompress an existing JPEG as a JPEG-XL? That was one of the most interesting features of the format to me.

ianlevesque··on “Inverse vaccine” shows potential to treat MS and other autoimmune diseases
It’s probably a waste of breath on this forum at this point, but look it up, and how long it takes even HIV infected individuals to become clinically immunodeficient.
