ianlevesque··on Boinc lets you help cutting-edge science research using your computer
Folding@Home predates the ML approaches to protein folding. Just because it has been eclipsed now doesn’t mean it wasn’t worthwhile.
ianlevesque··on Boinc lets you help cutting-edge science research using your computer
Just wait until you hear about Bitcoin
ianlevesque··on Apple announces ability to download apps directly from websites in EU
Oh I agree that they don't care, but that doesn't mean that Apple isn't distorting the market in a way that some of us, the very technologists building the next round of innovation, find abhorrent. This is a case where the public can have it all. The defaults can be "it just works" without also ceding all control over who wins and loses and a significant chunk of revenue to Apple.
ianlevesque··on Apple announces ability to download apps directly from websites in EU
If you need to infantilize your relatives because they cannot be trusted with their devices, then MDM them, or even have that be the default. But we do not need to surrender in the war on general purpose computing for it.
ianlevesque··on The Windows Ubuntu Operating System
Honestly with Microsoft's Windows 11 direction I want to like this, but they took it too far. I don't miss the start menu and control panel, I just want really good WINE integration.
ianlevesque··on AstraZeneca unveils successes in treatment of lung cancer
About 20% of smokers escape that way. Enough for everyone to know one, but the odds are still not in your favor.
ianlevesque··on Unreal Engine 5 ported to WebGPU
Source available though. The point is the same.
ianlevesque··on Raising Children on the Eve of AI
Oh it's detached from global reality too.
ianlevesque··on Coding in Vision Pro
The focal distance is more like six feet on most headsets. That's further than my physical monitors are.
ianlevesque··on AMD funded a drop-in CUDA implementation built on ROCm: It's now open-source
Thinking about the highly adjacent graphics APIs history, did anyone really 'win' the Direct3D, OpenGL, Metal, Vulkan war? Are we benefiting from the fragmentation?

If the players in the space have naturally coalesced around one over the last decade, can we skip the thrashing and just go with it this time?

ianlevesque··on AMD funded a drop-in CUDA implementation built on ROCm: It's now open-source
And indeed more than succeed, they invented x86_64.
ianlevesque··on Fck-nat: The (f)easible (C)ost (k)onfigurable NAT
On the other hand, this is your chance to name it fsck, fwkc, fck. It'll be harder to rename later.
ianlevesque··on CEOs Are Using Return to Office Mandates to Mask Poor Management
You act like they’re sorted into two distinct categories that never change. Why should the working agreement be upended at a whim with no data and then everyone sheep along? It’s the churn, with real consequences for where people live and socialize, send their kids to school, for the weakest of reasons.
ianlevesque··on Apple to Developers: Heads I win, tails you lose (part 2)
It’s like they want regulators to get involved. The arrogance is insane.
ianlevesque··on Ceph: A Journey to 1 TiB/s
I played around with it and it has a very cool web UI, object storage & file storage, but it was very hard to get decent performance and it was possible to get the metadata daemons stuck pretty easily with a small cluster. Ultimately when the fun wore off I just put zfs on a single box instead.
ianlevesque··on Fishshell rewrite-it-in Rust progress: 100%
Yeah even if it built, a windows shell needs to do different things. I’ve had some success running it in msys2 though: https://evil.link/2022/03/31/using-fish-shell-on-windows/
ianlevesque··on YouTransfer: Self-hosted file transfer and sharing solution
That's probably what Maine thought as well https://apnews.com/article/maine-moveit-file-transfer-softwa...
ianlevesque··on Libwebsockets: pure C library for http, websockets, MQTT
This is just false with NIO buffers. There’s a large corpus of Netty-based servers and clients for all sorts of binary protocols.
ianlevesque··on What should we know about APFS special files?
The APFS feature that I'm having the most trouble with is 'purgeable' space. It's extremely not clear when it purges or if it matters whether it's a user-visible application or a unix-y utility like cp consuming space. I seem to be able to run out of disk space and have problems when 100s of GBs are supposedly purgeable. There are CLI commands to purge space, but it's also unclear from the man pages what the parameters are supposed to be to get it to do the thing.
ianlevesque··on Writing a TrueType font renderer
> Inexplicably, though, the TTF stores all fields in big endian

Both the 68k and PPC (as configured for macs) were big endian.

ianlevesque··on Para-infectious brain injury in Covid-19 persists at follow-up
You're very not alone. I don't think society is yet grappling with the implications of disabling so many people on an ongoing basis.
ianlevesque··on How to turn off Google's "privacy sandbox" ad tracking, and why you should
I’m far more worried about attestation features that will force you to use the browser sites want you to use than I am about any browser-specific targeting “feature.”
ianlevesque··on Show HN: I'm open-sourcing my game engine
I play a lot of games and sold some in the past, but I’ve never heard the term. What is an IO game?
ianlevesque··on iMessage Key Verification
Nor a distant security threat.
ianlevesque··on Rising Temperatures in the Netherlands
Sure yeah, or we could accept the settled science and move on to fixing the problem before the ice caps are gone and frozen methane hydrates vent from the ocean and kill much of the globe.
ianlevesque··on Godot: A Collaboration with Google and the Forge
What DLLs? Wine has DLLs but they're compiled from open source, unless you are downloading some installer with winetricks. What did Proton do?
ianlevesque··on QEMU-iOS, an emulator for legacy Apple devices
You are correct on all points of course. My main point was that unlike projects that distribute those components there's really no grounds for Apple to DMCA down the emulator's GitHub repo itself.
ianlevesque··on QEMU-iOS, an emulator for legacy Apple devices
As long as they're not distributing iOS or any proprietary ROMs with it then the emulator is perfectly legal.
ianlevesque··on Quest 2 is outselling Quest 3
Yeah it's really incredible the progress in just a few years.
ianlevesque··on Active turbulence cancellation makes bumpy flights smoother
That's a really good point. Napkin math on an Airbus A321 gives about 81 milliseconds of time to react, not far off from the 1/10th of a second they cite for their prototype.
