ianbooker··on The Mathematica Journal is no longer accepting submissions
Even today the editors will know and corresond with you. They then send it to the reviewers, to make it double blind. But I see your argument with already popular researchers for the selection step..
ianbooker··on Windows XP Activation: Game Over
Have you tried GOG.com? They use Dosbox as emulator inside their software, so any DOS game should run on Apple silicon (or Windows 11).
ianbooker··on On Having Enough Socks (2019)
Color.

I only buy socks in colors or patterns I do not own. Super simple.

ianbooker··on Barbados 4–2 Grenada
That is something different, since Algeria could not change anything in the game at Gijon. That what makes it disgraceful.

In Barbados 4–2 Grenada, both teams still had the opportunity to act, albeit in unforseen and seemingly strange ways.

ianbooker··on ThinkPad 701C with a Framework brain transplant
Another and maybe more accessible target would be the IBM Thinkpad X41. It was incredibly slim for its time, it still kept the 4:3 screen ratio (not sure if compatible with the bigger ipads?). I wrote a bachelor thesis on it and a fanless version would still be the laptop of my dreams.
ianbooker··on EU Passes Law to Switch iPhone to USB-C by End of 2024
For the younger: EU regulation is the sole reason why most devices charge by USB nowadays. In the age before the smartphone, every company would ship their own charging bricks with fixed cables and connectors. I still have a drawer full of that stuff...
ianbooker··on Facts about State Machines
I am also in search for a elegant way to teach such implementations in Python. I do not want students to confuse this with OO, not sure if they see the value in functional programming so soon. My best idea so far is to teach the concept of state and state machines with Python generators…
ianbooker··on Bruce Willis Sells Deepfake Likeness Rights So His 'Twin' Can Star in Movies
I always wonder how actors are insured while filming a big production. And what logistics or prep is in place for the case of their death. Well, in the future there will be a contractual clause and a 3D scanning session at production start…
ianbooker··on Homemade Heat Pump Manifesto (2009)
To aid the discussion: There are multiple kinds of heat pumps used for homes, mainly air-to-water and water-to-water. Since the post is 12 years old, the availability of air-to-water solutions may be understated. At least in Europe it is now quite common to find them in front of new homes. Placed and looks like an AC unit, sounds like a laptop from 2005.
ianbooker··on Why intuitive troubleshooting has stopped working
I often feel that for example Python web stacks are overly reliant on conventions. Your work is expected to follow nested conventions, and if you do so, things work. Yet, some conventions imported from other underlying packages are not documented in the current package, so if you are new to the stack you are lost immediatly.
ianbooker··on New Tolkien book, The Fall of Númenor, to be published
I think you do not need to wait that long for marketed AI written synquels. (I just made this up for "synthetic sequel").

It will be very interesting to see how exactly this is marketed and how big the market for such product will be.

Sequels, spin-offs are alle the rage, but B-Sides, lost tracks or unpublished material are less mainstream.

ianbooker··on Twenty years of my blog
Truley a gem of the early "modern web" and a source of inspiration ever since. I remember checking the aside daily for new links in the early days...
ianbooker··on EU vote to ban all sales of combustion engine vehicles by 2035
This is an interesting guessing game. What country could it be?

You must be thinking that automotive will suffer from this, this leaves France and Germany on the table. Arguably, a lot of the sector is spread across the EU, but this spread is facilitated by the common market itself.

Since France has basically endless opportunities arising from its "carbon neutral" power generation, are you thinking of Germany?

ianbooker··on Nearly 20% of active Twitter accounts likely to be fake or spam
The stream API can sample, but then you see currently active accounts only.

Users are denoted by numerical ID, you can sample using this.

ianbooker··on The SymPy/HackerRank DMCA Incident
For the sake of a mind game assume that assignments and solutions can be copyrighted.

The mind game is: The assignment is most likely produced with a solution, but published without (lets say else it would not be 'assignable'). For deterministic solutions, could you copyright it without publication?

ianbooker··on Extracting WhatsApp Messages from an iOS Backup
In iOS it does the same for iCloud.

There is no official way to switch from Android to iOS, and the reverse is only possible for some newer Samsung phones.

ianbooker··on Things I would like to see in a computer algebra system
We are currently evaluating SymPy in Jupyter Notebooks as tool for teaching and from that experience I would add both simplicity for beginners as well as explicitness to the laundry list. Python and SymPy for example will simplify things they think is "trivial" (not so simple for teaching basics). Yet while you can be very explicit to counter such behavior, this will take away the simplicity.
ianbooker··on Evaluation of science advice during the Covid-19 pandemic in Sweden
It would be a better benchmark to compare Sweden with Denmark, since societies and health care capabilities are more alike.
ianbooker··on A 9-line summary of textbook physics
Strangely not. You can do CS on paper, no need for a single bit-flipping device. Turing did half the field in his head / a thought experiment.
ianbooker··on OBS Plugin: Background Removal
You are one bed sheet away from chroma keying in OBS. Since you can easily configure the color to be keyed, you will have luck with anything besides the color of your skin or your eyes. I tested it with a green sheet fitted on the bookshelf behind me and since bed sheets wrap around roughly the size of it, I did not even need any tape or clamps to fit it.
ianbooker··on John Koss, headphones pioneer, has died (2021)
It depends: I think the advent of MP3 pushed the concept of psychoacoustics* into the spotlight and the smartphone "revolution" made it mainstream.

Therefore speakers just sound like they would sound good without being physically "better". But for example your average smartphone is just one update away from sounding like crap.

ianbooker··on Nikon F-Mount
Unsurprisingly, there is a whole community collecting old lenses, I just narrowly escaped this not so cheap hobby. But I am more and more fascinated by using the different bouquets ("style of blurred backgrounds") as case for teaching. There is so much in there: optics, physics, math and a very nice application of machine learning, maybe.
ianbooker··on Using BeOS on a Power Mac (2001)
10.4 was also the first release for Intel Macs and therefore was the first version for the majority of modern day MacOS users.
ianbooker··on An Efficiency Comparison of Latex vs. Word (2014)
"Efficiency" in this study is measured by counting errors in reproduced texts and that is a fair operationalization for "typesetting". Yet, it seems that the design omits a central variable as there is no information on spellcheckers. While its a easy default in Word, you can only speculate about the usage in thr Latex groups..
ianbooker··on Everything I googled in a week as a professional software engineer (2019)
I really enjoy my teaching of and in R, where it is preferable to develop most commands yourself. Preferable because it is just hard to google even fundamental tasks because it is hard to formulate your problem. You must use Google only strategically.

Then I taught a class on applied software development in Python and I had to learn that convention cannot be developed by just yourself, so most of the times it is indeed "Straight to google if it's something I don't know."

I think for the latter it is the right way to teach the process as messy as it is, but what does that say about it?

And not to be misunderstood: Most of the problems we face in R are harder to google because the user base for what we do is so much smaller.

ianbooker··on Ask HN: Why is there no good open-source LMS?
Is (online) education is an attractive market? Before Covid, the answer was: Meh. Lot of competition, little funding in most countries. And Moodle (or Canvas) is a good enough solution, both also enable kind of third-party marketplaces. We looked at different LMS solutions and some better ones could best be described as "Moodle distributions", centered around a theme and some plugins.
ianbooker··on Hetzner cloud servers are now available in Ashburn USA
We use green energy at home. Its as simple as choosing the right provider and paying a cent extra per kw/h.

Its bs if you would expect Hetzner owned windmills connected straight to the DC.

ianbooker··on Germany has one of the lowest tuition fees
Not sure if that is the case for every institute / subject in Austria, there are entrance exams for medicine in Vienna, as far as I know.

But for some universities and some subjects that is also true for Germany.

ianbooker··on Voila – From notebooks to standalone web applications and dashboards
We host at this scale on a dedicated server and it is roughly 0.5 Euro per user per month.

We provide this no matter the season and usage is very seasonal for us ;) We also provide way more computational bandwidth that would be necessary, so I guess you can provision this for half the cost, just be sure to put out the right restrictions for resource usage.

ianbooker··on A USB adapter for a classic Depraz mouse
Usually there is no contact between cap and wine, the cap shields the cork, the cork keeps the wine. If wine permeates the cork .. you will not want to drink it anyway.
