iampivot··on Effect of Colonoscopy Screening on Risks of Colorectal Cancer and Related Death
"Gold-standard trial" sounds about as good as Genuine Leather does for leather. (Genuine leather is the cheapest leather, for those that don't know).
iampivot··on EU Passes Law to Switch iPhone to USB-C by End of 2024
USB-C can easily deliver 100w continuously if the charger and laptop supports it.
iampivot··on Scientists find wreckage of ship that tried to warn Titanic of iceberg
I always find things in the first place i looked, because i didn't look properly.
iampivot··on Pressure leaks hit undersea Nord Stream pipelines
It could also be Putins way of saying; see what I can do. I can do the same to the pipelines from Norway. There has been a lot of unidentified drone sightings in the Norwegian part of the North Sea in the last week.
iampivot··on Saving the Ancient Glass Artifacts Shattered in the Beirut Explosion
Reminds me of these restorers; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MIoi-DSm0e4
iampivot··on Apache NetBeans 15
I think a lot of users jumped ship when it was donated to the apache foundation and no release happened for a very long time.
iampivot··on Homebrew Bluetooth Headphones
TIL!
iampivot··on CotEditor – Lightweight Plain-Text Editor for macOS
It doesn't work well with extremely large files. That was one of the good things about TextWrangler.
iampivot··on Compare Webb's Images to Hubble
Isn't one way to detect redshift to check if there's absorption of certain frequencies due to the light passing through matter on the way here? The absorption will be redshifted as well?
iampivot··on Toyota unveils 8.7 kWh battery for residential applications
You want about 20kWh at a minimum to be self sufficient. We have a 10kWh Tesla battery, and it only lasts until the evening (saving 20%) for grid outage backup.
iampivot··on Find a good available .com domain
What about those edgy names with a spelling mistake?
iampivot··on Inkscape 1.2 released
All text rendering on recent macos versions is blurry in the same way as GTK4.
iampivot··on Inkscape 1.2 released
Isn't openGL deprecated in favour of Metal on macos? I assume the transition to Metal might not be too big though?
iampivot··on Police claims to have fingerprinted computer based on printed document
It's however the default size for most printer drivers, so it's often selected as default when trying to print for the first time.
iampivot··on Why does pepperoni curl? (2019)
Cut a small slit on the edge of the pepperoni.
iampivot··on Ask HN: Startup Failure and Debt
The debt is one thing, another is missing out on that steady pension contribution from a normal salaried job.
iampivot··on Fedora 36: Fonts in GTK 4 apps look different, more blurry
I think it's not necessarily better, but it's diminishing returns for additional complexity.
iampivot··on Apple, Google, and Microsoft commit to expanded support for FIDO standard
One way to view this is that they are formalising how password managers should work; integrated in the browser / device, and use public key certificates for logins instead of username / password.

There are of course side issues such as big vs small players, privacy, security etc, but that's not the major thing about this.

iampivot··on Sway Tower, the Tallest Unreinforced Concrete Structure (2020)
Wasn't this also because they needed certain volcanic ashes for their concrete, which would be hard to find elsewhere?
iampivot··on Fedora 36: Fonts in GTK 4 apps look different, more blurry
The problem with subpixel antialiasing (the rgba antialiasing), is that it is impossible to do properly with hardware acceleration when you need transparent surfaces or any rendering with an alpha channel in general. So you need software fallback for those cases, which slows down the rendering pipe eg in web browsers. for 4K screens is easier to just drop subpixel antialiasing and just rely on good old antialiasing instead, since it's no longer needed. I'm thinking most of the complaints with the newer rendering stacks are people still using FHD screen resolutions.
iampivot··on Go will use pdqsort in next release
XOR certainly was patented for use to display mouse cursors.
iampivot··on De-Anonymizing Bitcoin
Has there been any similar work done to de-anonymise monero?
iampivot··on A Silly Usecase for WebSockets (strobe warning)
How about having an off switch on one side and an on switch on the other, then we can fight it out by seeing how many goes for each?

Or, make in a flappy bird game? One up and one down button.

iampivot··on Lon Lat Lon Lat
lat also sorts before lon, alphabetically. So easy to remember.
iampivot··on The Future of E-Bikes
Could the complexity be reduced further if the hybrid moved to a fuelcell + electric motor instead of ICE + electric motor?
iampivot··on AU Border Seizes Phones
The US border forces has the same ability to demand access to phones as they do in Australia though?
iampivot··on Why Retaining Walls Collapse
They can be made a bit prettier by using flat sided rocks and line the front of the wall with rocks that seems to interlock a bit. Any round rocks that will not make a flat wall go in the back.
iampivot··on Space colonies of the future as imagined by NASA in the 1970s
I'm wondering if aiming for less than 1G of artificial gravity would be sufficient to counter the ill effects of zero gravity environments? If you could opt for, say 0.3g, then the required speed would be greatly reduced.
iampivot··on The Deep Sea
That's how going to mars will be like? Trapped in a Orion sized space craft, pooping a foot away from your buddies for the next 12 months round trip.
iampivot··on The IKEA catalogue through the ages
Wish I could buy the furniture of 40 years ago instead of the stuff they make now.

Edit: maybe not, just had a look at their 1981 catalogue...
