iamandrus··on After The Regretsy and Diaspora Account Freezes, We’ve Lost Confidence In PayPal
I lost trust in PayPal a LONG time ago.

Once upon a time, I was ordering a shiny new processor from eBay. The processor was located in Italy and the seller was Italian (obviously). I think nothing of what PayPal would do and send the money. Mere hours later: "Your account has been frozen." They wanted my utility bill, SSN card, drivers' license, and a copy of my birth certificate (I still live with my parents because I'm in high school, so my name wasn't even on the utility bill). To pay for one fucking $200 processor.

Luckily, I contacted the seller and we did the transaction through Escrow. He was pretty understanding of it and claimed that his account had been suspended numerous times. He used the exact words "piece of shit scammers" to describe PayPal.

WePay all the way. Someone needs to start a rival auction site that uses these other payment services. I'd use that nonstop as I have a ton of stuff to sell but my eBay account is banned (and my name is blacklisted from both PayPal and eBay, hilariously).

iamandrus··on Man with multiple degrees fails standardized test for children
Junior in college-prep high school here. The math questions are really easy: basic algebra, geometry, and trig. I can do it in my sleep, and I barely studied for that test and did well.

I agree with you fully, kids need to be taught based on what they want to do. I've wanted to be an entrepreneur for a while now and the only class that interests me in school is journalism (I enjoy writing). The math class is a joke, English is boring, and the rest of the classes are boring.

iamandrus··on RIM Takes $485M Hit Over Unsold PlayBook Tablets
They have nobody to blame but themselves. They shipped the tablet too early and without fully finishing it. Why should I need to own a BlackBerry in order to utilize something as simple as email or BBM? Sure, it's a tablet that's meant to be integrated with your smartphone but I should be able to buy it as a standalone product as well. The only thing that can save them now is to abandon the PlayBook and do a completely new tablet that can actually gain tablet market share.
iamandrus··on Ask HN: How many of you built a profitable startup while having a day job?
I'm actually working on a startup while in school (not technically a day job, but similar). I think my idea has a ton of potential in the market I'm aiming for, so I've been working on it for almost a year now.
iamandrus··on The Apologies of Zuckerberg: A Restrospective
Also, I found the article about that. Thought I'd post it here: http://articles.businessinsider.com/2010-03-05/tech/30098380...
iamandrus··on The Apologies of Zuckerberg: A Restrospective
When it comes to something as sensitive as user privacy, no mistakes should be made.

You can't just excuse a criminal for stealing thousands of diamonds because he may have given a few to a charity. That's a poor example but I think you get my point.

iamandrus··on The Apologies of Zuckerberg: A Restrospective
> Facebook should start by sharing its secrets with us.

Especially since they've claimed to be "loyal to their hacker roots" on various developer pages...

iamandrus··on IPad disrupting global DRAM market, causing chipmakers to lose billions
So shouldn't this mean chipmakers should be adapting their business model?

Also, incredible that Apple is selling more iPads than Dell is selling full PCs.

iamandrus··on The Apologies of Zuckerberg: A Restrospective
He also used a Facebook user's credentials to hack into her (?) email account.
iamandrus··on The PC is dead. Why no angry nerds?
The PC isn't dead. It never will be. Sure, it's changing roles in a smartphone/tablet world, but it'll never "go away."
iamandrus··on Facebook creates Chief Privacy Officer roles in wake of FTC complaint
It seems like this guy is here to lobby for more lenient privacy laws in favor of Facebook's business model, rather than work to protect users' privacy...
iamandrus··on I was annoyed with sites asking for too many Facebook privileges and made this
I wish it was that easy for me. My generation almost refuses to use email or even text messaging -- everything has to be done through Facebook.

I just wish the next big thing would pop up so we can stop worrying about what stupid privacy blunder Facebook will commit next.

iamandrus··on Google I/O 2012 extended to 3 days, moved to June 27-29
I'm a student and I need to make sure I'm not missing any summer classes I may be taking. Also, some people work and may have to notify their supers early.
iamandrus··on For Thanksgiving, give your parents a treat: upgrade their browser
Same, except for FF. I wrote a theme to make it look somewhat like IE so my dad wouldn't notice a difference.

Thank god my mom uses a Mac.

iamandrus··on Mobile ‘Rootkit’ Maker Tries to Silence Critical Android Dev
If a carrier tampers with the OS in evil ways like this, Apple will not respond happily.
iamandrus··on Mobile ‘Rootkit’ Maker Tries to Silence Critical Android Dev
Carriers don't have access to the source code AFAIK, correct me if I'm wrong but they can only change the "cellular" part of the phone (baseband, carrier packages, etc).
iamandrus··on Carrier IQ Tries to Censor Research With Baseless Legal Threat
I just read what they wanted him to replace his research with. The nerve...

Did he actually infringe on anything or does the First Amendment apply here?

iamandrus··on Facebook is gaslighting the web. We can fix it.
That sounds simple and easy but for today's teens there's no limit. I know people who have gotten expelled from private schools for posting stupid things on Facebook. It's a disturbingly common occurrence. It's not Facebook's fault obviously, but for kids, dangers about "oversharing" go in one ear and out the other.
iamandrus··on Facebook is gaslighting the web. We can fix it.
The only way to stop Facebook is to protest and boycott it. It worked in 2006 and 2007 (News Feed and Beacon, but Beacon might have been 2008) and it'll work again.
iamandrus··on Facebook Privacy: Site Confirms It Tracks You After You Leave
Facebook has said that it's rooting for an "open web", but it can't even be honest about what data it's collecting, how much tracking is done, and how that data is used by the company.

A scary aspect of Facebook is that most users are completely unaware and care-free. Their friends are on there, so why should they leave? A lot of my friends are leaving for Twitter because of the recent porn spam and the ticker nonsense, but that's a tiny chunk of the userbase (maybe a few hundred at the most).

iamandrus··on Mozilla urges its users to raise their voice against SOPA
Unfortunately I doubt Facebook will even mention the SOPA law. Google might put a small piece of text on the bottom of the home page about it, but even then that's a big "maybe."
