iamandrus··on Desperation: Go Daddy calling customers, begging them to stay
I use Name.com as well. Excellent interface, support staff, and easy-to-use website.
iamandrus··on Desperation: Go Daddy calling customers, begging them to stay
There's no reason to use GoDaddy anyway. There are a lot of better domain hosts out there (Namecheap, Name.com, and more).
iamandrus··on Media Temple's stand on SOPA
They really are an excellent company. I currently host my startup with them and I couldn't be more pleased. Glad to see they're against SOPA as well.
iamandrus··on Go Daddy No Longer Supports SOPA
But now the question is whether this is just damage control or if they really support anti-SOPA efforts now. Either way, they learned not to fuck with the Internet (their customers).
iamandrus··on GoDaddy is default registrar for Google Apps Domains
Hashtags don't work here. It would be different if he said "Just saying..." instead of using a tag from a social network. Also, how does it leave "everyone with their underwear in a twist"?
iamandrus··on Official list of SOPA supporters
Because their products are technically "pirated" (stolen and sold for less, counterfeits are made, etc).
iamandrus··on Petzl comes out against SOPA, after appearing on the list of supporters
> In February, 2011, Petzl did sign on to a letter circulated by the Outdoor Industry Association supporting government action against intellectual property theft via “rogue websites.” That letter made no mention of any specific legislation, and support for it was spurred by Petzl’s own encounter with the problem of counterfeit life-safety products.

Ahh, so that's how they're getting supporters... very shady.

iamandrus··on Facebook machine learning technology improves; Redditors alaramed.
Believe me, I would have remembered doing it. I wouldn't have cared about a location tagging message if I had entered the location manually. Not to mention I couldn't even remember the names of some of the cities where the photos were taken until Facebook suggested them to me.
iamandrus··on Poll: Did you transfer your domains from GoDaddy today?
I had all my domains on Name.com, I'm waiting to see what their position on SOPA is; if it's negative, i'll switch to Namecheap. I hate GoDaddy regardless of their stance on SOPA.
iamandrus··on Facebook machine learning technology improves; Redditors alaramed.
I would have remembered when the message to tag the location of my photos came up.
iamandrus··on Facebook machine learning technology improves; Redditors alaramed.
I never entered anything into the location field (I would have remembered doing it), yet it got the exact city and state where I took the photos.

I uploaded pictures from a class trip on Facebook back in 2009 and had no captions or names that suggested that the pictures were taken in California. My camera at the time was not capable of GPS. Facebook still managed to get the location right.

Scary stuff.

iamandrus··on Smoke Screening: Journalist tests TSA
I'm surprised he was even let through the checkpoint after that comment.
iamandrus··on All Programmers Are Self-Taught
Congratulations on your first app. It's a good feeling indeed. :)

I recently wrote a ton of Node.js example scripts (chat, group chat, notifications, interaction with PHP, etc), because I had never worked with Node before. I knew PHP, a bit of Rails, and C, but it really feels good to learn a new language or way of programming. I didn't need books or anything, just a bit of example code.

Obviously, since I knew JS, Node wasn't too difficult, but it's an extension of what I previously knew so it took a while to get used to. I also learned a lot more about JS in the process. Self-teaching yourself to code has amazing results.

iamandrus··on Show HN: I Created the Inverse of Angry Birds
Rovio probably won't care as long as he doesn't start profiting from the app.
iamandrus··on Megaupload Video Reinstated
Mark Zuckerberg called his users "dumb fucks" and hacked his competitor and several school journalists' email accounts. Yet we don't hold that against him today. Kim has proved that he's changed, so don't criticize him for past events.
iamandrus··on Judge gives Universal Music 24 hours to explain takedown spree
I can't tell you how many times I've seen YouTube videos taken down by "companies" with such names as "0wn3d Limited" and "Videosux Corp." The DMCA was broken from the start.
iamandrus··on Most Important Open Source Projects of 2011
I do agree with what he said, Android isn't as open as it seems. Google didn't release the Honeycomb code because it "wasn't ready", yet allowed manufacturers to ship tablets with a version of it on there. And he also made a point when he said that Android is more "source open". Nobody can really influence the code unless they work for the company or a company close to Google.

And Gcc isn't really a "new" software so it's not for this list, but it's definitely an important one.

iamandrus··on Facebook releases HHVM, 60 percent faster than its current PHP interpreter
Yeah, I phrased that awkwardly thinking back to it.
iamandrus··on Facebook releases HHVM, 60 percent faster than its current PHP interpreter
Agreed. I don't like what Facebook is doing with the social network portion of its business whatsoever, but their engineering is brilliant and it's awesome for them to release something as amazing as this software.
iamandrus··on Facebook releases HHVM, 60 percent faster than its current PHP interpreter
I would prefer juvenile and brilliant (but productive) programmers to boring men in suits sitting in dark cubicles, lifelessly writing code day after day, and who have no sense of humor or fun whatsoever.
iamandrus··on Ask HN: How do you get over the fear of launching?
Last.fm for gaming. It was a failure but I learned a lot from it.
iamandrus··on Ask HN: How do you get over the fear of launching?
Just launch. Go along with what happens and if you fail, well, you've learned something, right? Also, keep in mind that it took many, many startups weeks, months, or even years to gain traction. AirBnb had been active for years and was just about to shut its doors when it suddenly exploded with activity and popularity. Facebook wasn't the social networking giant it was years ago when it was just a school social network (only had students on it). Stay positive and don't overstress yourself like I did.
iamandrus··on Facebook Is Making Us Miserable
A lot of my time is dedicated to messaging (which is handy because a lot of my friends use FB more than texting), and I also occasionally read through and comment on wall posts.
iamandrus··on Facebook Is Making Us Miserable
Agreed. Almost all of the advice on HN is well-intended, but some stories are just big negative walls of text about how my business plan is shit, how I'm an idiot, and how my idea is stupid. By cutting out HN sometimes, I can get things done without overstressing myself thinking about my startup in a negative light.
iamandrus··on Facebook Is Making Us Miserable
My rule is to use Facebook three times a day for twenty minutes each. I'm not addicted to FB, but this helps me stay away from long chats I may get into with friends. I get shit done with this method and I rarely break this rule.
iamandrus··on Universal Censors Megaupload Song, Gets Branded a “Rogue Label”
Megavideo would, they hold the rights to the song and have agreements with the artists in question. UMG would be held responsible since their name is on the infringement notice.
iamandrus··on MPAA Boss: If The Chinese Censor The Internet, Why Can't The US?
I really hate how companies like the MPAA and RIAA exist. They care about nothing but precious profit. Yeah, let's forget constitutional rights and free speech, and censor the Internet to protect our product that can survive without us. China's doing it! We have the technology!
iamandrus··on Code snippets on Microsoft website shown in form of images.
I'm OCD about code, and that Javascript makes me want to rip my hair out.
iamandrus··on CNET Injecting Malware into Downloads
I remember back in 2006 when the Download.com logo had "Safe, Trusted, and Spyware-Free" under it.
