I think the people who are into it are the people who before AI would throw up a pull request that was complete shit, expect everyone else to tell them what to fix, and somehow still keep their job.

My ex boss who was very very pro AI would constantly say that we need to be more productive. Which triggered in me the question of "why". Aren't we producing enough as a society at this point? We have enough for everyone, and the fact that it's not being shared fairly has nothing to do with productivity. We don't need "more", we need " better". And I don't think most uses of AI will lead to that. If we lived in a more just society I think we would concentrate all the AI resources on a few key areas where it could genuinely help make things better, like medical research. We don't need more and more crud apps.

This all sounds insane. If it requires so much back and forth with the AI why on earth wouldn't you just write the code yourself? At least then you build the mental model of the code and keep your brain healthy. Reading the comments in here about all the hoops people are having to jump through just to do the same thing they were doing a year ago without AI... and spending a fortune to do it! I think you've all got AI psychosis.

Hasn't all automation up to this point been same input equals same output though? Automation using LLMs feels different to anything before and I don't think there's a comparative time in history to point at and say "look it happened before and we are now better off"

That's not really true. One would like it to be, but it's not. We are taught to worship biological mothers in society so that people keep having kids and thus feeding the tax collector, military machine, cleaning toilets etc. Take veterans for example- we put them on a pedestal so that more kids sign up to feed the meat grinder in the hope of having a "veteran" car sticker one day.

I think the solution is to fix society so that we value quality over quantity, self betterment over getting rich, and making society better for every one rather than worshipping billionaires.

I think it's important to at least have a mental model of code you directly commit to the codebase, and that doesn't happen if it was written by an agent.

I think focusing on intended users / customer base for feedback is better than a bunch of students and wannabe entrepreneurs who will never actually buy your product
