Thanks for pointing out to me that I did't get something/anything from the word you uttered.

Also thank you for pointing it out and not taking up the chance to start voluptuous chatter, now.

You must be a man of sparse words.

i_am_new_here··on Japan pitches 'Society 5.0' to keep its edge in tech and science
I find it discriminating of you that you distrust any ones ability to do the job. In Japan there are Japanese people. Who should do the job? They of course, why not, they live there. Why shouldn't "some of them" create enough diverse views? What do you want? That people from other countries go to Japan and enrich them? Gentrify and replace them? Will they have/add better perspectives? Will they mix or integrate into the local population while providing more diverse views and creating a more diverse population (also: physically - like "mixed ethnicity babies")?

> Obviously just putting some underqualified person isn't going to work out and it's a bit tautological to state this.

You have nothing to add to my reply so you reply with a tautology and to your own defense you point it out yourself ?!

Diverse often means to accept less qualification for the sake of accomplishing diversity, unfortunately.

It's not the perspectives that matter, its execution. Did you understand this?

i_am_new_here··on Japan pitches 'Society 5.0' to keep its edge in tech and science
I don't see why Japanese men shouldn't be up to the job compared to the groups you listed with their obvious downsides:

younger - lack of experience

female - women to the rescue

international - lack exposure to local customs

"Fresh perspective" / "leaders in the decision making process" (leadership positions) - Hacker News agrees that "it's all about execution" and that "adding more ideas/perspectives" as you suggest here might be rather counterproductive or at least not a benefit.

It's software engineers that get payed a multiple of other (regular) jobs in silicon valley, which sets SV apart from the rest of the world.

People arguing like you are either young, not-male and/or not-native and want one of the financially attractive leadership positions for the money. They don't want or promote diversity anywhere else but in this limited area (leadership positions), which just quickly exposes their true underlying motivation: Hypocrisy and your own greed.

Tim O'Reilly wrote a seminal paper about the "Web 2.0" in 2005 [1]. I remember reading it and it truly was an influential masterpiece "one of it's kind". Since then cohorts of much less important groups keep counting up and releasing things echoing Tim's "2.0", e.g. "Industry 4.0"

From a time line perspective we seem to have reached "5.0". This time with the prefix "Society".

<Women>: Does incredible things, that typically men are way better at (math and sports) and: She even does 2 of them, at the same time and to the very best. Incredible. Bravo!

How plausible/believable. And what an adorable women and a role model for other girls. And we need so many more female role models to inspire as many young girls as possible (ideally: All of them).

Having kids and a family (with a man,... a protector?!) is really lame and needs to be avoided. Top notch careers are much more important. I mean: Who doesn't want to be remembered by the random name that was given to you - First name by your parents, last name by people in the middle ages struggling to keep people apart during rapid population growth. I feel very inspired now.

Thank you journalist (w/m/d) for writing this article.

It is clear that men are all grabbing for these enviable positions just for the sake of it (and not as a means for anything else) and we need to get women there, too.

i_am_new_here··on Ad men sacked to improve gender pay gap win sex discrimination claim
My information is that there is almost no gender pay gap, if you adjust for special factors.

They need to do the tough man's job to earn more. Women that are already "Women in Tech" (e.g. HR in a TechCompany) need to make other women "also" do a tough (real) IT-job!

Fake women (in tech) are pushing other women to the real (coding) fronts... why is that?

Are guys doing the same?

They want independence but are not independent (from Spain). Otherwise both is right. "Spain" is the country and "Catalan" the region (within Spain).

It would be good journalistic practice if they would not jump to conclusions too quickly, try to influence the public opinion with (their) assumptions or just try to heat the debate by taking a side too early ("suicide"). We are on Hacker News: The upvoted article usually has a high quality/standard, which is a quite positive thing.

To label/dismiss something that might be true (>0%) a "conspiracy theory" doesn't give it justice.

"All conspiracy theories turn out to be true" reverts it to "100% true", then.

Where are we now in the discussion?

Did we make (any) progress?

No

I argue that it created costs [for him and/or others] and put him (and others) at increased risk.

i_am_new_here··on The Schindler of Japan, Chihune Sugihara
There is a lot of free, cheap and easy things... It is not interesting to point them out.

Accomodating and feeding people are among the most expensive things that exist. Refugees are very expensive for societies that take them in!

Unfortunately your wishful thinking does not match reality. I know everything could be so nice, but in reality you will steal, when you have nothing/little putting those around you at risk.

i_am_new_here··on The Schindler of Japan, Chihune Sugihara
> while costing you nothing and incurring no personal risk.

Read: While costing a lot and putting you at high risk.

How can you say otherwise?

> Rich people are just as likely to steal if they think they can get away with it.

This assumes, that the motivation for stealing is .... the expectation to get away with it.

What if one of the two parties (rich, poor) has another motivation like... hunger... :-)

Would that scew the statistics ?

How and why do people write these idealist but still obviously false claims, like here: "The rich and poor are just equally (likely to steal)" ?

This is so off topic and/but (currently) still the top comment.

Since when would anyone remember how to properly write something, when the representation he has is the phonetics in his head?

Nobody thinks "It's disk, because it comes from diskette."

Why do people argue as if anyone would think like that? - Though I don't doubt that it's the origin. Are we supposed to know the origin of (every)thing(s)? - We mostly don't.

To then write it "disc" makes sense, except you are from Germany.

To then pseudo-intellectually pretend that people know whatever and what not and don't rather go by guts feel (what it sounds like) is blatantly dishonest.

It is so obvious what he states. It is kind of (obviously) right (and also kind of wrong).

Reminds me of Timnit Gebru on (the ethics of) AI. She tackles an obviously important (academic) topic, that you can't dispute how important it is, but though ... it is so shallow that with every sentence passing you say "yes (and no)".

i_am_new_here··on Risk-First Software Development
Make sure you have the "critical path" in focus and have/create a plan to go along it. "Easy things are easy" and you can do them along the way as side projects. It's tempting to do bike shedding. Manage risks and uncertainties. Though all this requires you to be senior and well experienced and some companies just don't hire these kinds of people, because they are too expensive.
i_am_new_here··on I Hacked into Facebook's Legal Department Admin Panel
> The way this is framed today by people is soo disgusting.

> Most people were dirt poor in the past in the western world by today's standards.

You have just adjusted one simplification to end up over exaggerating another one. A boomer's family could live off one salary. Since then women have joined the workforce and kind of the whole world by moving (migrating) or remote. While it is definitely true that those "none westerners were dead poor in the past compared to today" there is a 20+ year long wage stagnation in the west and increase in prices on some of the very fundamental needs like housing, which results in memes about gen XYZ not being able to afford them, create stable conditions, have a spouse and then a family (kids).

Anyway, we are in this together, always on(line), connected, one global world and it depends how you view it: Appreciate the advancements the non-western world has made or focus on the gap they still have to the west. Though this all comes to the expense of the western world, which is kind of required to close the global gap.

i_am_new_here··on The Airbnbs
That's true: AirBnB hosts profit from untaxed externalities (similar to "CO2 and pollution from combustion engine cars", which Elon Musk regularly points to): The pollution with AirBnB is "noise" and "restlessness", which you don't want in a (permanent) residential area and which is/should be regulated often/mostly and probably not enough given the new business of AirBnB.
i_am_new_here··on The Airbnbs
Marketforces... sometimes it rather seems funny to me, that people lived in "expensive" "downtown" areas, which are predestined for higher returns via businesses such as AirBnB. There is a development behind that (the development of the city), but you can't blame anyone involved. Permanent residents want to live rather cheaper, outside of the city, greener, calmer, etc. Temporary residents require easier access and closer proximity to their (daily/vacation/business) needs, since they are not familiar with the area. There is disruption of an old industry (hotels) and you can be against that, try to stop it and maybe also successfully stop it. But I am not sure about how much sense this makes. Times change 1. the city and 2. the businesses.
i_am_new_here··on The Airbnbs
Yes. It doesn't make sense. The prices (rent) adjust so that "if you can't very cleverly combine it with something else", which probably most people can't, then it makes sense to "stay where you are" and pay the premium compared to travel(-expenses) and a cheaper deal. If a significant amount of people would find feasible ways "to arbitrage (between locations)" the market would adjust (and prices in SV would drop). If you manage a setup in which you can profit, it is a special one and not the norm.
i_am_new_here··on The Airbnbs
It was the hot insights at it's time. When looking back and depending on what you already know these insights have either been chewed upon for a long time and aren't that fresh any more or are still quite interesting. Thanks for the short summary of something, which is rather common knowledge today in our circle and thus makes perfect sense to wrap up in a short sentence instead of going into the full length article. Though it is also about opportunity and where I live (somewhere in Europe) there mostly is only the chance to work a decent job and paradoxically with that keep "the old big industry further afloat" - sideways and to the right on a high level (stock / revenue), locking everyone in this world and maybe/probably watching Silicon Valley disrupt it.
i_am_new_here··on The Airbnbs
"It all (already) exists in some way or another"... which makes it all about changes in opportunity, which mostly are uncertain/unclear over something like 10 years (AirBnB was founded in ~2008) and superior/excellent execution. So its all about execution, adjusting trajectories and being lucky, that the wind of change blows your way.

Eg. I absolutely don't want to downplay Mark Zuckerberg's contribution/genius, but Facebook comes to my mind, which certainly wasn't the first (attempt) at a social network. And: What are they today?! - Kind of the "web" (on phone/mobile) in India for example. With all the social integration and native (applications) first on (Android) phones, they became a better version of the WWW in less developed regions of the world.
