hyperific··on The secret Cold War bioweapons test that exposed millions in the Bay Area
Oh wow I wasn't aware of this. Yeah, same person...
hyperific··on The secret Cold War bioweapons test that exposed millions in the Bay Area
If you think this is interesting look up the Rajneeshi bioterror incident of 1984 and the 1993 Aum Shinrikyo Tokyo anthrax attack.
hyperific··on The secret Cold War bioweapons test that exposed millions in the Bay Area
Read about this in Judith Miller's Germs: Biological Weapons and America's Secret War.

The bacterial species released was Serratia marcescens. If you've ever seen a pinkish build up in your shower these bacteria are to blame. Normally doesn't affect healthy people but people with compromised immune systems aren't so lucky.

Operation Sea-Spray was the US Army operation that dispersed S. marcescens over SF. The Army has done similar tests with Bacillus globigii and even carcinogenic chemicals.

>And oh my goodness, it’s so pretty.

Am I the only one that thinks the word "pretty" is overused to describe the visual quality and artistry of games? I see this word thrown around often and it feels so low-effort.

hyperific··on Airplane Boneyards List and Map
According to the site, many airplane boneyards are limited access sites and do not provide tours. You can always call or email them and ask though.

Millions of years from now when sentient machine swarms from now nascent civilizations descend upon the ruins of Earth, they'll stumble on this actual physical ice cream flavor graveyard and ponder our frivolous whimsicality.

hyperific··on Sales and Dungeons: Thermal printer TTRPG utility
Thanks for making such a cool project!
hyperific··on Sales and Dungeons: Thermal printer TTRPG utility
There are a ton of brands and I got a random knock off so I can only report on that one. I would recommend putting some thought and research into what size you think you'll need. I got a 58mm printer and I'm realizing it's quite narrow.

Also you might want to consider the size of the printer itself. I bought a open-box new printer off ebay and the seller's photos didn't give any sense of scale. I was surprised how big this "mini" printer is. It's about the standard size of a printer you'd see at a grocery store, so I don't think I'll be keeping it on my desk.

hyperific··on The greatest shot in television: James Burke had one chance to nail this scene (2024)
If it gets someone to watch the show for the first time then that's a win in my book. I think every young student should be exposed to Connections at various stages of their education.
hyperific··on Task Paralysis and AI
Addressing the end of the article, I think that we are all very much still learning how to use AI responsibly. It's like we just discovered alcohol and we're going on a rager every night because we don't know any better yet.

It's too easy to buy €100 of Claude tokens and burn through them to make those dream projects appear as if by magic. There's a middle ground where, for example, instead of building a whole project it could produce a project template and provide guidance as you build. That should take the edge off the task paralysis and hopefully disrupt the addiction loop.

hyperific··on Show HN: Piruetas – A self-hosted diary app I built for my girlfriend
People usually put pretty intimate private thoughts in diaries so I'm curious how your app handles preserving each user's privacy. Are files encrypted or only stored on a user's local machine or something?
hyperific··on Is my blue your blue? (2024)

hyperific··on Refuse to let your doctor record you
I definitely agree that medical professionals are spread too thin and automation seems like it would be a boon but, as the article points out, the introduction of automation likely won't translate to more doctor-patient time it'll translate to doctors seeing more patients.

The solution not only introduces a problem (decreased privacy) but could reinforce the existing problem it's trying to solve.

hyperific··on F-35 is built for the wrong war
"If we all reacted the same way, we'd be predictable, and there's always more than one way to view a situation. What's true for the group is also true for the individual. Over-specialize and you breed in weakness. It's slow death." - Major Motoko Kusanagi, Ghost in the Shell (1995)
hyperific··on I Made the "Next-Level" Camera and I love it
Interesting that he explored wax as an interstitial "image sensor" medium. Given the low melting point of wax you would risk part of your camera melting during hot days, or the wax gradually settling on the bottom from heating and cooling cycles.

Kudos to him for exploring it though! The leftover wax could supply a small candle making operation.

hyperific··on Ask HN: Any interesting niche hobbies?
You'd need to schedule and take an exam. There are lots of resources online to help you study. I recommend the Youtube video from Tony and Chelsea Northrup.

I'm not sure how saturated it would be. My advice would be to contact the closest FD (or PD if you wanted to go the SAR route) and ask. If they say they're covered, ask if they know any other stations that could use a hand. There's bound to be a department that needs volunteers.

The FD should have an enterprise level DJI (or equivalent) with color and IR cameras but it will probably depend on how well funded the department is. SAR may be a different story as far as equipment but I don't know since that's not the route I pursued.
