hydroxideOH-··on How to Get Better at Recursion
Recursion doesn't use more space than iteration in languages with tail call optimization
hydroxideOH-··on It Can Happen to You
At least for Racket, which does have TCO, the for-loop is really a macro for a tail recursive loop. I'm not sure about other languages with more aggressive optimization though.

Netlify also gives a healthy free tier of serverless functions if you need them.

They can also manage your domain/ssl which is nice so I can manage everything related to my site on Netlify.

hydroxideOH-··on Emails a browser extension developer gets from scammers
You already have to do that. In the extension manifest you need to specify URLs you need to access. I'm pretty sure the process of approving an extension is entirely automated though, so there isn't any real accountability unless an extension is specifically investigated.
hydroxideOH-··on Object-Oriented Programming Is the Biggest Mistake of Computer Science
In Racket and Scheme, false is the only 'falsy' value, with everything else evaluating 'truthy', which is nice since you don't have to worry about the specifics of the return type.

I think the bigger issue with null or None, though, is not necessarily using it as a return type (where that makes sense, and can be enforced by a type system) but when objects are mutated to the value of null. The bigger issue there is with mutation and side-effects, but having null there as a convenient short cut can be a foot gun that leads to lots of errors.

hydroxideOH-··on AMD Launches Ryzen 5000 Mobile: Zen 3 and Cezanne for Notebooks
I run Arch on the HP Envy x360 with a ryzen 4500u and it's a very smooth experience, I've had no issues. I did have Ubuntu on it at first and it may have been a bad install, but it was terrible. Half the time I'd turn on the laptop and something different would be broken.
hydroxideOH-··on Ask HN: What are you working on?
I'm working my way through Skiena's Algorithm Design Manual, while implementing the main algorithms and data structures in Racket.

It's interesting since the book presents all of the algorithms in a very imperative style, all in C, so it's a bit of a challenge to translate that into the functional world of Racket.

hydroxideOH-··on Airbnb to Block and Cancel D.C. Reservations During Inauguration
Probably because the Biden administration is determined to have a "normal" inauguration and a "normal" presidency after running on a unity/centrist platform.
hydroxideOH-··on Ask HN: Show me your half baked project

Connect your Spotify account and listen synchronously with someone, either by sending them a link or by joining a queue to be randomly paired up.

I basically had no idea what I was doing while developing both the react app and the the node back end so it's a little buggy.

hydroxideOH-··on How I got to $9.99 MRR after 7 years
If you were a really successful startup, you'd be at $-100M MRR. Step up your game.
hydroxideOH-··on How I got to $9.99 MRR after 7 years
It's a joke.
hydroxideOH-··on Wyze $20 Smart Watch
I wouldn't recommend an Amazfit watch. My Pace's battery was completely fried after 6 months. A few times it even started audibly sizzling. Maybe if you are okay with buying a new one every six months, but with wearables it's probably better to pay a bit more for a better designed Garmin.
hydroxideOH-··on Would you be willing to fund a Linux port to Apple Silicon?
I was able to fix the brightness controls on Ubuntu by switching to Linux 5.8, if you haven't already tried that.
hydroxideOH-··on Charles Darwin notebooks lost and assumed stolen
There seems to be a Show HN nearly every week of a Roam-like tool that I would be surprised if there wasn't already a well supported open source clone.
hydroxideOH-··on The Tyranny of Merit
Need-blind admissions only exists for a very small fraction of schools -- those that are in maybe the top 20? (I don't know the exact number). Also, it often leaves out middle class students, whose parents make too much to get substantial amount of aid, but don't make enough to pay the tuition out right without being buried in loans.

Because of this, high achieving, middle class students often go to state schools, which often give merit scholarships (top-20 schools don't), and have much lower tuition.

hydroxideOH-··on Dev Fonts
I never use == in any circumstance anyway, but telling the difference between the == and === ligatures are really not hard. The === one, at least with JetBrains Mono, is much larger.
hydroxideOH-··on Apple Silicon M1 chip in MacBook Air outperforms high-end 16-inch MacBook Pro
Only since the most recent version of iPad software, before that connecting a mouse was either impossible or through a hacky accessibility system.
hydroxideOH-··on Manim: Animation engine for explanatory math videos
For those interested in Manim, there's an actively developed fork called ManimCommunity[0] that is looking to make it even more powerful and developer friendly.

hydroxideOH-··on Next.js 10
Next with static rendering (or Gatsby, which I find horribly over complicated) are alternatives to Hugo and Jekyll. If you already know React, they are pretty easy to set up since they handle all the webpack/babel stuff for you, so you shouldn't have Javascript build issues.

When statically rendered, React is mostly just an alternative templating language.

hydroxideOH-··on Show HN: Duotonic – Listen to Spotify and chat with a friend or stranger
Hey, this summer I created a site that allows you to synchronously listen to Spotify. You can either get a link to share, or be paired with a random user through the queue.

It's completely free (though you do need Spotify premium) and open source. Also, all you need to do is connect your Spotify account, there's no log in to my site. This is the first real full stack website I've made, so you might come across bugs, and if so you can report them on the github:

https://github.com/micahcantor/duotonic

If anyone has any questions or comments I'd love to hear them!

hydroxideOH-··on Racket: Parsing propositional logic in 33 lines
Hi, author here. I'm new to Racket and obviously no expert. I realized this problem, but I wasn't sure about the best way to go about fixing it, do you have any suggestions?
hydroxideOH-··on Flatpak: A security nightmare – two years later
I can't comment on it's security, but all of the snap apps I've used have an insanely high start up time that it's genuinely confusing how it could be so bad.

On my laptop with a latest gen ryzen cpu and nvme ssd, the Chromium Snap takes 30s-1 mins to launch, while the .deb launches in under a second. Same for Spotify, Discord and others that I've used. The start up time is so bad that I replaced them all for .deb versions which has been much better.

hydroxideOH-··on The benefits of note-taking by hand
That's good to hear, I might have to swing it for an iPad and pencil.
hydroxideOH-··on The benefits of note-taking by hand
I've been using a 2 in 1 Linux laptop for similar use cases, but the software options aren't amazing.

How well does the iPad handle hand recognition when using a pen? Does it accidentally scroll down PDFs or lag when you are switching from pen to fingers to zoom or pan?

hydroxideOH-··on Every single step I took to get my side project to $1k/month
